A fine example of a animated made by adults for adults without any pandering towards the teenage or child demographic that most American animation seems to seek.

I bought an English subtitled DVD of this movie about 10 years ago. I love this movie, but I absolutely hate subtitles!!! Now, I can actually watch this movie and see the great animation without needing to read the subtitles. I love how the present-day parts of the movie are very sharp and detailed, and then the flashbacks are not as detailed nor colorful denoting that they are recalled memories, which tend to fade over time in our minds. This style of mixed animation was a great choice that Isao Takahata made in this film. Go see it now!!!

Charming Period Piece and Slice of Life

While Studio Ghibli is most remembered for its fantastic, out of this world features, their slice of life movies are just as endearing. Only Yesterday offers a coming of age story that looks at two different eras and it handles it with the quiet nuanced introspection the studio is famous for.

This film is truly a hidden gem among Ghibli's giants. Watching this movie is like taking a ride through your own childhood, your own memories. It allows us all to tap back into our youth and reflect and grow as people. This central theme along with Ghibli's breathtaking scenery in the shot make this film great.
