Nanking
A simultaneously depressing and uplifting documentary about the occupation of Nanking, China by Japan prior to World War II. Presented skillfully via archival film footage, interviews of surviving residents of Nanking and Japanese soldiers, and dramatization of the Americans and Europeans who were there by actors (Woody Harrelson and Mariel Hemingway among others) reading from actual accounts. Simultaneously heartbreaking for the unspeakable tragedies suffered by the residents and elevating for the moral firmness and courage shown by those who tried to help. Ultimately, Evil wins over Good, but fortunately, such was not the case in World War II, which followed shortly. You should see this powerful film to understand a little discussed part of history, and to see Evil at its worst and Good at its best. Rate at B+. Adults only, and not for squeamish adults.
