Two 14 year old boys in rural Arkansas find a fugitive (Matthew McConnaughey) hiding on a river island, plotting to escape once he locates his two-timing girlfriend (Witherspoon). The movie centers on the boys helping the fugitive (named Mud), but it's core theme is the complicated relationships between men/boys and the girls they yearn for, but can't receive reciprocal love from. McConnaughey is great, playing a gritty, semi-wild Southern drifter that is far from his usual pretty-boy roles. Ellis, one of the boys and the lead in the movie, is awesome in portraying a coming of age teen that assists Mud because he understands the same yearnings for unrequited love. The movie will be compared to Beasts of the Southern Wild, but they are very different. But, if you enjoyed the young girl actress in Beasts, you'll love the acting of Ellis in Mud.

This was a good movie a little slow paced at times. I enjoyed the acting and it doesn't matter how rough looking they try and make Matthew McConaughey look he is still FINE!!!!

This is not the typical Matthew McConaughey movie, a coming of age story filled with friendship, family relationships, and love with a little bit of humor on the side. You can't help but appreciate the raw acting of those two teen-age main actors as they bring back a lot of fun memories of our own childhood. I'd say it's a 'GO'

Really enjoyed this movie! Great photography, acting and plot. Drama and romance with some mystery. Appropriate for my 9 &11 year old - all adults and kids loved it!
