This is not the typical Matthew McConaughey movie, a coming of age story filled with friendship, family relationships, and love with a little bit of humor on the side. You can't help but appreciate the raw acting of those two teen-age main actors as they bring back a lot of fun memories of our own childhood. I'd say it's a 'GO'

Two 14 year old boys in rural Arkansas find a fugitive (Matthew McConnaughey) hiding on a river island, plotting to escape once he locates his two-timing girlfriend (Witherspoon). The movie centers on the boys helping the fugitive (named Mud), but it's core theme is the complicated relationships between men/boys and the girls they yearn for, but can't receive reciprocal love from. McConnaughey is great, playing a gritty, semi-wild Southern drifter that is far from his usual pretty-boy roles. Ellis, one of the boys and the lead in the movie, is awesome in portraying a coming of age teen that assists Mud because he understands the same yearnings for unrequited love. The movie will be compared to Beasts of the Southern Wild, but they are very different. But, if you enjoyed the young girl actress in Beasts, you'll love the acting of Ellis in Mud.

McConaughy keeps getting better and is picking some really good roles. The supporting cast, particularly the young boys, is very good and the story has a timeless feel to it.
This movie has been out for a few weeks and the theater was packed, so it seems that it is receiving strong word of mouth acclaim from viewers and will have a long summer run in a fairly broad distribution.
Not sure if it will receive oscar consideration, but I wouldn't be disappointed if it did.

Matthew McConaughey's best work since Lone Star. The two boys, Jacob Lofland as "Neckbone" and especially Tye Sheridan as Ellis are fantastic. Michael Shannon is great in a small role. In fact, I can't think of a single actor not in top form, including Reese Witherspoon who is better here in a supporting role than she was as the Oscar winning female lead in Walk the Line. Great story beautifully told. See it!

I see a ton of movies and, in all honesty, this is the best I've seen in the last 10 years. Hands down. I won't tell you anything else. Just please see it.
