The setting of the movie is Arkansas along a river. The characters were great and the first half of the movie was entertaining until it became cliche with the "true love" theme. The entire relationship Mud had with his lifelong true love was far fetched. I think this movie would have been better if Mud turned out to be a villain instead of an idiot who wasted his life.

This is a story about two 14 year old boys growing up in Arkansas . The boys , Tye & Jacob , live on the river and they find a boat on an island , that is stranded up in a tree [probably from some flooding] . Matthew , who is also on the island , claims that the boat is his [FYI: Mud is his name] and he asks them to help him get it seaworthy again . He also tells the boys that he is waiting for Reese . Joe Don shows up looking for Matthew or Reese , whichever one he can find [he's not picky] . The story is pretty good and the actors are too , but it would have been better if they would have cut a few sub-plots that were not really necessary [it's over 2 hours long] .
It's rated "PG-13" for violence , sexual situations and language and has a running time of 2 hours & 10 minutes .
I don't think I would buy it on DVD but it would be alright as a rental .

This movie sticks in your brain like peanut butter to the roof of your mouth. Well acted, the boys characters are cut right out of real life and the story leads you to root for Mud and his maligned love interest. One of the better movies I've seen in a while.

The movie is reminiscent of the movie "Deliverance". t takes place in a poor fishing town with a bunch of redneck type characters who believe in revenge. It was very slow moving and Mud spoke with a thick drawl and was hard to understand what he was saying. The movie was slow moving and basically meaningless. Nothing to bite your teeth into. Kids might appreciate it more then adults (not that I think many people would) because the main characters are 2, 13 year old boys who like to have adventures and flirt with girls. Otherwise it was a waste of time. I would skip it. There is one exciting shoot out towards the end but that too was meaningless. The moral was also meaningless.

This is not the typical Matthew McConaughey movie, a coming of age story filled with friendship, family relationships, and love with a little bit of humor on the side. You can't help but appreciate the raw acting of those two teen-age main actors as they bring back a lot of fun memories of our own childhood. I'd say it's a 'GO'
