I'd see it again...

This was a very good down to earth movie that wasn't overblown with CGI and special effects. Really good acting by the whole case and it was based on a true story.

I thought this was a very good and interesting movie! Do not usually like Shia L. but he was very good! But I loved the Forrest character! Very entertaining and you get a bit of a history lesson as well!

Lawless was great!

"Based on a true story", I wonder how much was real and how much was Hollywood. The movie was great, based on bootlegging in VA during prohibition. The violence was a little over the top at times, but if it was an accuate protrayal of the time, so be it! The cast was incredible. I have to admit I went to see it because of Tom Hardy. I wish they would cast him in a role where he does more than grunt.

I loved it.! All the performances are terrific. It reminded me a lot of Bonnie and Clyde and the score is brilliant. Tom Hardy in particular is, bottom line, an outrageously good actor...and even in all this blood an gore -- he's funny. Several of his looks, accompanied by the perfect grunt, caused me to stifle giggles. I shall see this movie again..perhaps more than once, and when it comes out on DVD, I'll buy it. Go see this movie..if you can tolerate a little blood and gore. I would love to see the director's cut..I have the feeling Hillcoat had to cut a lot of this to get it down to the proper time and I sure would like to see what was not in the movie.

POWERFUL AND TOM HARDY THE NEW HEARTHROB!!

Great film and based on a true story, about 3 brothers who ran a moonshine business out of Virginia during Prohibition. Refusing to start paying off the corrupt offiicials who come in from Chicago, the film is graphically violent, unsettling, powerful and a must see. Great action and camera work, a substantive, yet subtle story of brotherly relationships, a love interest thrown in (the great Jessica Chastain) and all around riveting movie for a Saturday night!

Good story

The movie is a little slow in some parts, but you have to remember its based on a true story. Overall, the acting was not too bad. And there was a lot of humerous parts to go along with all the rough & tough.

Lawless is truly an Oscar contender!

I was not aware of this true story but I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Everything about the movie was spot on. The direction, the actors, the beat of the film and they the story unfolded just spectacular. Tom Hardy's acting was superb and he should be up for a best actor nod.

Don't wait for the video see it on the big screen. Oh yeah did I fail to mention the love stories in the film.

too bad.....

too bad the writers have no shame whatsoever. a good script can be ruined for many that can do without the pervasive language. can't you idiots get the point across with better vocabulary? it CAN be just as entertaining without the language that's more than vulgar
Nothing to do with 'free speech.... it's called obscenity. there IS a difference.

'Lawless' Is Almost a 100 Proof Moonshine Flick

Let's be frank here: this is not the movie for you if you are not a fan of violence, if you scoff at nudity, and you embrace loud and stupid over subtle and quaint. However, if you're willing to adventure into the backwoods, Prohibition era setting of 'Lawless' with these things in mind, you're in for a treat.

This film packs a punch and doesn't hold any of those punches back. With a screenplay by Nick Cave and masterful direction by John Hillcoat, 'Lawless' is the kind of crime drama where everything is a cliche, but that doesn't hold the film back. The choices of each of the film's players - particularly Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman - are wise, calculated, and spectacular. In fact, the film spectacularly goes from 100 MPH to a steady pace and you barely notice it. And sure, the story is a little dodgy in parts, but it delivers in spades if you're willing to be patient and see the heart of the underdog that this film represents.

Final thought: Distilled to near perfection.

Well made film, but lacking...

Lawless is a well made film with solid acting, but its story is typical and as a result you'll leave the theater feeling like you've seen this movie before or heard it a various stories. Tom Hardy and Shia LaBouf turn in fine performances, but Guy Pierce's character, who is supposed to be uber-menacing, is basically a run-of-the-mill bad-guy with few surprises. If you've not seen the film this director (John Hillcoat) made in 2005, "The Proposition", I would rent that instead of seeing this. That film is dark and hauntingly beautiful.

Whereas Nick Cave and Warren Ellis' scores for both "The Proposition" and "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" were again, hauntingly beautiful, the music for this film lacks the aching-eloquence that those two films possessed.

Did I like this film? I did. Would I see it again? I would not due to its lack of "bite".

I loved this movie. I think Shia's performance was so amazing and convincing, very different to his transformers movies. I loved Tom Hardy, his character was just a tough believable character, wishing to be like him. I loved this movie so much that I hated the bad guys, it felt so real. I would definitely see it again. It kept me in suspense, I hate that, which to me makes a great movie.
