Not bad enough to walk out of enough

Ok the premise was good. For historical time period accuracy about a 75% as the characters' dialogue was sometimes strained and sometimes got laughs when I don't think it was intended to get a laugh. Plot was thin if you had read any of Poe's works it was easy to figure out the twists that were coming. Maybe with a stronger lead actor and better plot it would become a cult classic.
A lot of blood so not for the young and impressionable.

    AWESOME!!

What great acting and the way they brought so many of Poe's poems and stories to life was just amazing. I would pay full price to see it again that is for sure!!! This is a must see and a must own!!

    A Great Movie!

Though it was a little long, something I didn't mind but a few of the people I took were a little unhappy with, I enjoyed this movie. It is not a normal you can sit down and figure out the person doing the crime right off nor is it a well why the hell was it that person either at the end. It kept you guessing without the cheap trick of not showing you the person or giving you a lame reason at the end. Also, it was so well written and brought to the screen, the casting couldn't have been better for the movie. Not once did I sit there and think, "This would have been just a little better if not perfect if so-and-so had been in it instead". But, be warned for those that want another of John Cusack movie, this is not it. The closest I can say it comes is his role in 1408 style verses his normal line of staring roles. He was masterful in this movie and makes a great Poe for this era. Please go and enjoy this movie!

    Close enough to Poe

    by

Good movie, keeps you guessing and in suspense, and the historical angle and connection to Edgar Allan Poe is an added bonus, John Cussac is his ussual self, meaning a good actor. Certainly worth your while.

    The raven

    by

the movie was great! Must see! John Cusack should get an award for the acting.
the "main on ends" was a waste of time and had nothing to do with the movie, not sure what was up with that portion of the crawl...

This seems like a mockery of Edgar Allen Poe

I have been following Edgar Allen Poe since early childhood and his sinical stories and tragic life has always intrigued me. Why not just make the movie based on his actual story the raven rather a murderer inspired by his stories, the whole part about him having some beautiful love who has to be saved isn't even close to how Poe lived. He married his 13 year old cousin in secrecy so if that Emily girl is 13 than it isn't Poe. Plus she died shortly after their marriage. Poe never found anyone else he was to secluded from life to actually be socialable. Just your average hollywood over-produced story that has little coralation with the author they base it upon. If you make a movie about Poe best learn his life instead of winging it and making it a movie we've all seen a million times before in murder mysteries! I think I'll just stick to the independent films on netflix. They're more creative.

THE RAVEN. REMINISCENTS FOR ADMIRERS OF EDGAR ALLAN POE (1809-1849).

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) has fascinated me my entire life; an attraction/repulsion whose tentacles have permanently enslaved my lust for the macabre. His ghoulish, gruesome tales; the "stuff" of nightmares, reflecting his tortured spirit are offset by poetry so magnificently beautiful, spiritual that huge passages have resided comfortably in my memory bank...

John Cusack is credible as the crazed, alcoholic, desperate "Poe" frantically trying to save his beloved "Emily" (the beautiful Alice Eve) from a "copycat" murderer, who baffles, plagues ...

Director James McTeigue creates an eerie, murky 1849....He over indulges the ?nevermore? reprise and plummets to the level of intellectual abuse the ubiquitous ?craven raven?. But I was ?never? bored and always intrigued, sometimes that is sufficient entertainment...

    The Raven

Suspenseful and clever with interesting references to Poe's works; it makes me want to memorize "The Raven," again. Amazing set and costume designs. Very bloody in some scenes.

    The Raven

    by

I loved this movie. It was exciting, and mysterious and scary in the right places. I watch CSI, so I'm not afraid of a little blood. The whole cast was amazing, and John Cusak as Edgar Allen Poe was brilliant. I definetly want to know more about the classic author. This movie is for fans of his, and mystery lovers as well, but don't take my word for it, see it for yourselves.

    Revisit Poe, Then Go!

I thought the film was a smart, suspenseful, sometimes gruesome period piece. While not 100% necessary, if you revisit Poe's Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell Tale Heart, Cask of Amontillado, The Mystery of Marie Roget, etc. you might find it even more enjoyable. I thought Cusack did a fantastic acting job. To me it was From Hell meets Sherlock Holmes and I love both those movies so it left me satisfied.

    The Raven

    by kett

We really enjoyed the movie. The reviews that we read weren't very good but it just goes to show you that you can't believe everything that you read. We thought that John Cusack did an excellent job playing Edgar Allan Poe. We were very much involved in the movie and it kept us interested thru out the entire movie. We would definately recommend seeing it.

    Quoth The Raven !

What a fantastic movie! If you are fans of "Sleepy Hollow", "Sherlock Holmes", and "From Hell" you will enjoy this one with John Cusack! A madman starts brutally murdering people based on Edgar Allan Poe's works. A young police detective will join forces with Poe to put a stop to this lunatic before it becomes reality. Luke Evans, Alice Eve, Brendan Gleeson , Kevin McNally , Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Sam Hazeldine play good roles as well. GO SEE IT! Great movie if you love period flicks. The critics are wrong once again!

    I thought it was great

The first 20 minutes were a lottle slow but the movie picks up quickly after that. The story is creative and the characters are likeable. I was changing my guess about "who done it" through the whole movie. I also like the twist of reality and fiction about Poe himself.
I recommend it, I was very entertained.

    Loved it!

    by jonifar

To be honest, I was only excited about seeing this movie because I'm a huge fan of Luke Evans, playing Detective Emmett Fields. I wasn't sure what to expect from John Cusak or the rest of the cast, but was pleasantly surprised by all of their performances, especially Cusak's Poe. The story doesn't drag along - indeed, the film is only 1hr 43 minutes long, but I was caught up in it from the beginning. While I'm not into the gore aspect, it was well done and not over the top, adding to the overall menace of the killer and his game. Definitely one I'd like to see again and it's definitely going into my movie collection at home when it's released!

    Nice Ode to Poe

A bit of a confusing start...but stick with it, the pace and story picks up fast. Cusack does a wonderful job making Edgar Allen Poe both larger than life as well as human. Thrilling murder mystery set in the backdrop of a time when people actually took the time to write, read and contemplate life through poetry. Excellent acting all round and a great poetic feel to the story. Nice Ode to Edgar Allan Poe.
