    Not exactly what I expected

    by suebea

This was a sweet movie with elements that I hadn't anticipated. Added some interest but had me puzzled for a bit....parts of it seemed more like a history lesson. There were some slow parts, but was also fun and amusing.

    Hugo

Hugo was an excellent film! I took 4 10 year-old boys and they all really liked it, which is quite a compliment for a long film.

    Awesome

    by YoMrDJ

Great story; very believable acting. They did the book justice. The suspense was great. We bought the book for our 7 year old twin boys; they really enjoyed watching the book come to life.

    Hugo is a masterpiece!

Beautful, beautiful movie! The story was rich and original with absolutely amazing period sets and spot-on casting. Everything felt real and yet unreal at the same time, like a dream or a memory only just recalled. Martin Scorsese has always been lauded as one of the greatest hollywood directors of our generation: you can now count me as one of his disciples! This movie is a masterpiece. Thank-you Mr. Scorsese. Thank-you Johnny Depp. Hello Oscar time.

    Wonderfully Slow

Think of this as the cinematic version of the "Slow Food" movement. "Hugo" was a sight for the yes, a stroke to the heart strings, and motivatin to hit great tomes on cinematic history. You don't need me to tell you Hugo is a MUST-SEE!

    HUGO

    What a fun Movie,
I enjoyed the story line, the actors and the 3-D,
I do not believe the 3-d is required, the movie will stand on its own.
This film is a film for kids of any age.
    Well done to all involved,
I will buy it for my home viewing pleasure.

Hugo - different than you'd expect from this director

We had heard the early reviews of Hugo and so decided to go with the family to go see. It was very good, just like the reviews said. It might not be for very young children but otherwise it is a good family movie with some surprising twists and turns. The relationship between the young girl and boy is sweet, and the ending is good. It also provided a very interesting view into the making of the earliest movies. It might be a slow starter for some, but the story keeps you engaged throughout the movie.

    Hugh 3D`

    by Ayreq

My wife and I (70) and our boys (40) thoroughly enjoyed it. 3D was a + but not "necessary" as in Avatar. None of us thought this was really not a movie children would enjoy, indeed would probably bore most. Definitely not an adult movie - no sex, no violence, no "bad" language, but much of the "moral" stuff would probably be lost on today's youth.

Go see the movie if you're a non-cynical grown-up; 'Twas more "A Christmas Carol" than " 'Twas the Night Before Christmas"

15 min short story stretched out into almost 2 hours

Although the cinematography was beautiful (even though it was mostly CGI) - The story line drag and felt slow, I tried hard not to fall asleep and I noticed many people in the audience doing the same. There was really NO need for 3D it neither added or took away from the film. The plot was simple and the characters 1 dimensional and under-developed. I was a tragic disappointment! I must say it was one of the most predictable 1 dimensional stories I have EVER seen.

    Nice visuals, but.....

    by mslavik

Yes, the visuals were nice. In some cases, quite nice.

Be prepared, however, to sit through some tedious and altogether pep-less stretches that could have been left on the cutting room floor without detracting from the story line. (I know--you can say this about so many movies.) It would have been easy to find at least 10-12 minutes of such material, and probably more. My girlfriend insisted that she could cut the thing by 30 minutes. A bit of an exaggeration, perhaps, but you get the point.

Most importantly, even though "Hugo" is positioned as a family movie, my strong advice is not to take kids under the age of, say, 12, as they will be only too eager to demonstrate their boredom and make your life as miserable as theirs, at least during the duration of the film.

I loved Hugo! and the 3D was a marvel

    by elisakm

I've taken to skipping most movies in 3D because it really hasn't added anything to the movie. In the case of Hugo, the 3D enhanced the vision and the story. I'd read the book and looked forward to the movie. Scorsese outdid himself in the Valentine to the early movie makers. This is a film for kids of all ages. Don't miss it.

    Hugo is magical, magnificent

"Hugo" is what filmmaking is all about -- a fascinating story, rich characters, sets that blow your mind, and performances that work on every level. I was mesmerized. Do see it in 3D -- I'm not generally a fan of 3D, but "Hugo" does it right and it definitely adds to the experience. I think adults might actually enjoy this MORE than kids, but kids should love it too. This is a classic!

    Hugo

A delightful fantasy. A frightened hero, befriended by a beautiful girl, who assists the hero in unraveling a mystery, and becomes a hero herself, thereby reestablishing the reputation of a movie genius. And providing a very happy ending. What could be better.

    Hugo 3D

    by ewmman

Awesome! Hugo 3D was really good, but not exactly like the book. Some of it was very dramatic, such as when the station inspector and his dog were chasing Hugo. Hugo's two dream scenes were a little creepy, but you'll get used to them. Papa Georges was a very strong and vivid character. His life's story made a lot of sense. Director Martin Scorsese used the 3D very well, but the movie probably wouldn't have been that much different without it.

We would definitely recommend this movie for kids our age, 8 and older. We also think it would be good to read the book -- "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" -- before you see the movie.

    Who really cares?

The movie had a chance if it kept its focus on Hugo....it stretched things thin by diverting focus to a grumpy old man, who's spirit broken, needs a new lease on life. It took a while to draw out the story, then hurried to tie it all together. A story of an orphan kid who's finding his way was exciting, the story of a washed up old filmmaker, not so much.
