A Unique WW2 Perspective Not Previously Performed.

The is a solid film. Screenplay, cast performances, photography, sound...everything just as it should be...except historical accuracy. Still, it's a fine entertainment piece taken in context to "play acting." It's worth its ticket price. See it. You won't be disappointed.

    Emperor? Nah!

This was a bad movie. Tommy Lee Jones had a cameo, with one pose and a dozen lines. The only "historical" focus was the story line that he was in. Not much of an "historical" movie. The subplot, the stupid love story, was so unbelievable as to be laughable. If the costuming hadn't been different, it would have be impossible to tell when the scenes were flashbacks. The direction was so poor, the poor actors didn't know what they were supposed to be doing but the worst was the editing. This movie had no flow, no continuity, the choices the editor and director made were just awful. While I appreciate the attempt to teach me something about the American occupation of Japan after the war, there was so little fact and so much emphasis on the dumb love story that this was one of those movies you walk away from saying, "Oh, well, that's 2 hours of my life I'll never get back." Really bad movie.

    Great hisoty story!

    by

Very entertaining and informative story about the end of WWII and Japan and it's society. Matthew Fox is outstanding and Tommy Lee Jones does his normally outstanding job! If you like history then you'll like this.

nice history lesson with hollywood exaggeration

Pretty cool to see what happened after the world war 2.
I didn't know about this part of history (after the war). I was enjoyable to see & learn about htis segment of history. I would recommend this to someone who even has a kinda intrest in history of WWII. Fox was good, TLJ is always fun to watch, with his cranky, no holds back attitude.

    I recommend it.

    Great Movie

I greatly enjoyed watching this movie. It has very little violence for a "war movie" and it is actually a historical movie. I have no idea how accurate the history is. However, from what I know of history, I think it is fairly accurate. The acting is excellent and the camera work is exceptional! I liked the ending and although it has sad scenes which made me cry I did enjoy the movie.

    Emperor

if you are a history buff and you like TLJ, this is a solid movie that will entertain and deliver the movie value goods; if not or you are seeking excessive stimulation, robots, vampire romance,
time traveling assassins from the future, homicidal ghosts, etc then not so much for you. some light romance, some historical obscura (but not too much) this movie will keep company with movies like Fat man and Little Boy, The Great Raid, etc.

Bait and Switch Marketing at its finest

You would think from the trailer that the movie was about Tommy Lee Jones but when you actually go see the movie, you find out it is about Matthew Fox. Fox isn't the best actor in the world as seen from his last mainstream movie Vantage Point. Its not necessarily a movie about the efforts to rebuild Japan as it is about Fox's personal love story with a woman that he's trying to find in Japan. Instead of just skipping right to where he knows where he'll find out information about her, it is dragged on for 2 hours about his relationship with her.

    Fascinating Post-War Drama

    by KISSman

A fascinating movie about how one general's war crimes investigation would directly effect Japan from that point forward. This is not a war movie with a lot of battles and such; this is mainly a drama about the aftermath. There is also a love story weaved into the investigation that is really rather touching. The final scene involving the mysterious Emperor and the real life photo that they show right before the credits was a perfect cap to the end of the film. Personally, I did not know all of the details concerning Japan's surrender so it also served as an educational piece to me which I rather enjoyed. I can't say that this was a gripping film or one that will amaze you, but if you are entertained by interesting historical stories, this one may be right up your alley.

    Excellent history movie

    by npd4866

This movie was better than I expected in some ways. I felt like they were in Japan in the movie and he pulled off McCarthur pretty well. The plot was excellent and being a history buff...I loved the movie. I'd recommend the movie to anyone that is a history buff.

Hoping for greatness, but settled for "good."

By the trailer you'd think that Tommy Lee Jones as General Douglas MacArthur was the major character, but he's not. That belongs to Matthew Fox's character - who I didn't know was an actual person! His personal reason and investigation of trying to determine whether Emperor Hirohito was guilty for Japan's aggression for attacking Pearl Harbor was good, just not great.

    Emperor

Husband & I really enjoyed the movie. Tommy Lee, always good. Emulating MacArthur was a LITTLE over the top we thought (only according to photos we have seen of the real Mac). But Jones is always a treat. wanted more from him but he wasn't the main star. Matthew Fox was interesting. We'd never seen him before. Enjoyed his role, and not knowing the authenticity thought he was very good. We were surprised though, if this was accurate, didn't our American soldiers dress up to meet (other powerful people) Egad, Fox's characters undershirt collar was always stretched out, no jackets or even a tie on either general! Still we give the movie a Must Go! Another blast from the past. We are always interested in 'what happened' when we were too young to understand then, in our mid 70s now. High schoolers might be interested if they've studied the war. No little kids.

Misinformation abounds -. I was there.

This movie is romanticized nonsense with no sense of period or historical style.. A supposed love relationship with Brigadier General Fellows, a 40 year old (during the occupation) who meets a relatively busty, roundish eyed Japanese in college shortly before Pearl Harbor. In actuality he was a graduate of West Point and later in the Army war college in 1949 and stationed in Egypt after that. A West Point graduate would not have been involved at that period of time in such a liaison unless he was a spy. Japanese women in that period always covered their mouths when they laughed (even in the west) . The only real truth in the film lies with the written words at the end where the fate of Tojo (and others) is mentioned. MacArthur spent much of his career in Asia and understood the Japanese mind.

If you are a romantic you may enjoy it. If you have a sense of history or if you were there, you will see the flaws, that are enormous.
Read William Manchester's biography for truth.

My favorite TV channels are the History and Military channels. This movie felt like it came directly from that source so I enjoyed it very much. I also liked that at the end they told what happened to the major players.

    Emperor

A really good movie. We were surprised, hadn't heard anything about it. It was moving to see the two sides that hated and misunderstood each other find a way to come together and move on from the war. Jeff

The younger generation needs to watch this film

The audience for the showing I attended was mostly those in the plus 50 and above age groups. Having lived in Japan for three years, I still gained insight into the Japanese culture and how it has changed since 1945. Although I believe the love story contained in the film could have been omitted, it was interesting and well incorporated into the private life of an Army General.

I recommend this film and wish that the younger generation took the time to watch this infomative film depicting the tragic events of World war II in the Pacific.
