Sort of Boring But Good Effects

It's been many years since I read The Hobbit, so I wasn't sure what to expect. In the end, I was a little underwhelmed by this movie. Those who remember the book might be more comfortable with the movie. I found it redundant. Hike a while, then get into a confrontation/battle, hike and then get into a confrontation/battle, hike and then get into a confrontation/battle. Okay, good. The only interesting twist was having the Gollum and ring introduced in the story.

    Hobbit HFR

I read many reviews before going to this movie; most were negative about HFR. After the first few minutes of HFR, I wondered if I walked into a different show than these experts. The HFR is amazing. The detail is explicit. Folks are complaining that the detail is so clear it reminds them of TV shows like soap operas and live theater, but this is inaccurate. The people who worked on The Hobbit took pain staking efforts to make every prop, costume and set perfect. So what that I can see Gandalf's contact lens. The properties in The Hobbit are not cheap and the sense of connection with the film is enhanced by the higher frame rate. One overarching theme of highly respected critics is that the HFR removes the smokey separation that creates the aura of "film." That somehow over-real production makes the experience distracting rather than immersive, but they are wrong. I've never felt more connected to a film. The story is fun and lively. My kids, 8 and 10, had a blast. Next up is ATMOS...

    Middle Earth returns!

Keep in mind, the Hobbit is a different story than Lord of the Rings and you should be not expecting the same tone that the previous trilogy offered. What you will be seeing is a new movie that offers us another chance to travel to Middle Earth and enjoy the characters and settings that Tolkien brought to life with his books.

As with any book-to-movie, there will be differences to the story. The movie is a unique experience and a wonderful chance to spend some time with Middle Earth on the big screen once again.

Is higher FPS better to watch The Hobbit?

    by

Absolutely! Didn't think I wouldn't like it but I was so wrong! Picture quality was real life quality as I could truly enjoy Peter Jackson's vision of how we should be viewing this tale. Family members who normally avoid 3-D had no blurry vision, headaches, etc. We will definitely watching more movies in this format!

    life in a video game

After looking so forward to the Hobbit I was grossly disappointed. There was little to no character development. And the graphics from the endless battle scenes were so obviously CGI that you were hard pressed to get involved emotionally. The 3D and great super frame rate that gave such a sharp picture was actually a deterrent. Since when do caves gleam? The wargs or wolves the orcs were riding kept reminding me of the Twilight series. These fearsome mounts were depicted far more effectively in the Two Towers. I was never really drawn in to the personalities of the dwarves. They were never given the opportunity to introduce themselves as characters you'd be interested in. The last Transformer movie had more character development than this. My teenage son, a great LOR fan turned to me and said, "Looks like Peter Jackson is suffering from George Lucas syndrome."

The Most satisfying film I've seen all year

The Hobbit is the most satisfying film I've seen all year. I have seen several enjoyable and entertaining films in 2012, but The Hobbit is the overall most satisfying. I saw it in 3D HFR and my describing how the film looks will scarcely do it justice. You will have to see it for yourself to truly experience it. The film is very sharp and very clear in a hyper-realistic way. It takes some getting used to, but once you're involved in this story you are completely enthralled.

It was wonderful to see some of the characters from the Lord of the Rings and I had a big smile on my face when the travelers got to Rivendell. I highly recommend seeing this movie in 3D HFR if only for the experience of seeing a new form of film entertainment.

The Hobbit has action, humor, excitement, and wonders to behold. Because of the Sandy Hook tragedy I think The Hobbit is a wonderful film to see as there are things said, and actions taken in this film that will warm your heart and satisfy your soul.

The Hobbit - with the high frame rate 3D... overwhelming action.

    by wigmon

I first read the Trilogy of the ring and the Hobbit back in the sixties when I was in High School. I still think it's the greatest story ever told. I guess I have read the series close to once a year for 30 years. I never get tired of it.

The Hobbit movie was spectacular and followed very closely to the book, especially the part where Frodo found the Ring.

I was amazed by the visual effects. The high frame rate 3D was unbelievably realistic, but at times the action was so fast I could hardly follow it. I may have to see it three or four times for it all to soak in.

In the end I loved it and I can hardly wait for the next part. Huge Winner for Peter Jackson, the cast and the crew. Loved it!

    A little long

This was a good movie and I'm already looking forward to the next one however, I'm not a big orc battle scene person so some of that got a little tedious. The story flowed well and I particularly liked the beginning with Frodo. If you enjoyed the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, you'll enjoy this.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

    by linqlay

The story was action packed and the photography was heaven on earth. Great story. Even though it was close to 3 hours long the movie flew by.

    Hobbit exceeded my expectations

    by wild_d7

I had read the book before I watched the movie, and ,although it embellished a little bit, (I found it worked out for the movie series without compromising the integrity of the story relative to the book), the movie was awesome. The visual effects were astounding, and believeable. I found the movie very enjoyable.

Amazing in every way! At times even exceeded expectation!

    by

It was amazing! Story and HFR 3D!
The 48 fps, HFR 3D was downright beautiful. It was so amazingly crystal clear. I was impressed! Some are saying it looked like a video game, but I thought it looked epic. Thought Jackson and Co. did a great job with the story too. The script was quite clever and funny at times. Bilbo was excellent as well.
I loved the 'riddles in the dark' scene with Gollum, among many other things. That scene was pretty much perfect. All told I was quite impressed. There are a lot of haters out there in the reviews, but I thought it incredibly well done.
There were many moments that reminded me of 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring'. I loved that I was able to recognize them.
I would very much like to see it again... and again...

Can't wait for 'The Desolation of Smaug'! :)

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

This latest of the Tolkien Tales, as brought to the big screen by Peter Jackson, has fulfilled all of my expectations of this brilliant director and story-teller. Once again, Peter Jackson and his amazing team of screenwriters and filmmakers have exceeded the high standards they themselves have set in the world of movie-making. The Hobbit is story-telling at a thrillingly high level and movie-making by people with few equals in the excellence of its presentation, sophistication, attention to details and technological vanguardism.

Suffice it to say, I expect that I will be seeing this wonderful movie quite a few more times to pick up those amazing subtleties which I have surely missed and for which Peter Jackson & Team are famous.

    Definitely worth seeing

    by

It's a long movie, but it's well worth it. The 3D+HFR experience made it stand out more than a regular film, felt more realistic. If you can spend the extra cash, go see this version.

    Hobbit in HFR?.......NO!!!!

    by

This was the worst looking movie I have ever seen, which is unfortunate because at a normal frame rate it would have been awesome! I have looked forward to this movie (or 3) for a very long time, and regrettably I went to this version expecting greatness, and it was a huge disappointment!! The background on "real" scenery such as mountains and landscapes looked great; however the movements of any character, fight scene, or anything with the use of CG (which is almost everything) looked phony, as if it were bad TV! I can NOT believe this was approved for the public to pay to see without a warning!! Needless to say I have had my tickets refunded, and will have to go see it again at a normal frame rate. DO NOT go see this if you care about picture quality, or be prepared to have a disappointing experience of what should be an epic movie.

HFR 3D will blow your mind

    by

    No spoilers here.

The first 10 minutes of the movie I was just struggling to comprehend how REAL everything looked. The entire theater let out a gasp as the first scene opened on the screen. There is some trouble following some of the fast camera motion, but it's not that big of a draw back for me. The beauty of this movie is just astounding, To watch it in 2D on a home TV will just not be the same.

For all the "Purists" out there that hate when a movie adds things to a book, you will not be very happy with this movie, BUT (and it is a big but) The additions to this movie (mostly) come from other Tolkien lore and books. Also, all additions really were necessary to make a successful movie. There is so much narration in the book that has to be explained with action in the movie. There are character descriptions that can simply be told in the book, that have to be lived out in the movie. Overall this movie was stunning.
