    HFR fine.

The controversy about the realism of HFR vs 24 fps is overblown. Maybe if you have watched the movie several times, you can take the time to critique this, but first or even second time through, one should be enjoying the spectacle. I would not mind seeing it again. I can't wait for the sequel, and the only concern I have is how long I may have to wait for an extended edition trilogy to be released before I can finally buy it.

    Visually Powerful

Even set with high expectations, I was very happy with the amazing visual effects, attention to detail, and excellent sound effects. I did not have any "dizziness" or "unease" from the visuals, just a sense of high quality.
While the story does vary from the book, it is still close enough not to infuriate. It does have a few slow parts, but overall it doesn't feel like three hours. There is some great humor and drama scenes, and I highly recommend going to see it in the HFR 3D.

Excellent work despite 3 part film / IMAX still needs work

    by

Film itself was great, nice work on incorporating the many parts, I did feel like it was a bit rushed at the beginning (like someone was fast forwarding). Definitely recommend watching on the big screen worth the 3 hours.

On the other hand. I still think IMAX 3D needs work. Glasses + 3D film still hurts my eyes.

    Crisp and full

This movie proves once again how the right film maker can bring a beloved book to life. Too many times I've fallen in love with a story and been sorely disappointed with the film adaptation. Not so with Peter Jackson! This beautiful tale is well told visually, not due in small part to the new technology of more frames per second coupled with 3D (plus we saw it in IMAX). It was as though we were looking through a giant pane of glass and watching these characters. Crisp images and full of action, emotion and the small important details that make this world a believable one. A definite must see! (I wouldn't recommend small children attend due to some scary parts, but my 12 year old son was enthralled and wants to go again.)

Movie Review for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in IMAX HFR 3D

    by

This is a spectacular first chapter, that is actually loosely based on the incredible story from Tolkien's beloved first novel. This is how a true fantasy adventure is pieced together, a cinematic galore with great story telling and performances that are on the money from the entire cast. The last moments of this films climax are truly on edge for what is t come next year. I really couldn't care less about the story bloat (material was not in the novel but didn't downside anything), as long as it adds up in the future. This film does Tolkien's first perception of Middle-earth justice. And about the HFR 3D? Well after seeing all the bad reviews for the new 48 Frames Per Second gimmick and seeing a trailer converted into 48 frames, I took that advice and avoided it. But I then discovered the IMAX theater in my area was only playing in HFR 3D, so I decided, it can't be that bad. Well, I don't know what all the critics were talking about, but I ended up falling in deep love withIt.

    They forgot to edit it

Within the 3 hours, there is a great 2 hour movie. Too many times looked at watch to see what time it was - not a good sign. Yeah, there is some great scenes, but they are hurt by the lack of editing. Not sure how they can make one book into 3 movies - what I do know is if they continue to fail to edit and put our another 3 hour film that should have been 2 hours or less will really kill any hope for number 3. On the plus side, the 3D effects are becoming to much a part of the movie that it takes a bit to go back to normal screens.

    Jackson does it again!!!

I loved this first installment and can't wait to see the rest.

I saw it in 3D IMAX HFR. The IMAX HFR was awesome! But with that big of a screen, the 3D was kind of a distraction. If you moved your head, part of the image was fuzzy. The Hobbit doesn't warrant 3D in my opinion.

    Great story, fantastic film

    by kejboy

One of the best stories to be made into a movie. The acting is good as well. You can delight in the fellowship and actions of the dwarves and see how Bilbo becomes an integral part of their adventurous band. While they find the ring of power, the story has a long way until the finish.

I'll Watch All Three Because It's The Hobbit...

    by wynder

But I made two just like this in the bathroom this morning.

In short, the IMAX is awesome, the 3D is need and the HFR was interesting. I'm not sure of it was the combination of some of those, but most of the movie seemed too bright and without the regular camera filters (kind of like daytime soaps); so, it was kind of like watching a bunch of guys doing LARP with someone following them around with a video camera.

Many of the scenes are way too long and drawn out (to turn this single book into a three part movie) and the included songs are alarming -- the scoring and choreography of the musical performances gives the actors the appearance of being more suited for Broadway than the big screen.

The scare/edge factor is considerably less than LOTR and I hate what's going on the goblins speaking in a fairly normal human voice.

All in all, I was very disappointed. That being said, will I watch the rest? Yeah, because it's The Hobbit.

    Hobbit Great!!!

The Hobbit was a great movie, and I would highly recommend it.
It was fairly true to the book,
and had a lot of great special effects.
The hi-def filming was also terrific,
as it was definitely noticeable and clearer.
The acting was also superb, as usual.
I hate to wait a year for the next part to come out!
I will definitely see it again.

    Fantastic!

    by

Great movie! 3D IMAX was excellent. The 40 fps was also excellent for the most part. There was a chase scene that looked a little hokey because of the high frame rate. But overall the movie looked great! The scenery was outstanding. The dwarves were funny.

    Great film HFR AWFUL

I loved LOTR. I loved this film. Cast was awesome, Pete Jackson is awesome, people from New Zealand are awesome. But this high frame rate business, it looked like a cut scene from World of Warcraft. Save your money! I'm sorry but 24 fps is what our eyes have been trained to, maybe in a generation, this will be preferable to people, but for right now, it makes you wanna tear your eyes out.

    Hobbit Boredom . . .

It wasn't bad, but it wasn't really good. Definitely not waiting on the edge of my seat for parts two and three . . . yawn . . . oh, excuse :-) The good, it's familiar. The bad it's contrived. Not sure where the polarized 3D glasses went and instead replaced with red and green frames, REALLY. Because of these unique glasses the editors of the film made lots of edits that were difficult to follow. The effect of making the viewing experience jumpy with parts missing. It is unfortunate. Turning an enduring masterpiece of fantasy into a great motion picture experience is a very tall challenge. Unfortunately this film did not rise to the challenge.. especially at $15 a ticket. Do your kids a favor and teach to read. Then create a safe environment for them for a summer where they can read the Hobbit & Lord of the Rings. That experience will truly enrich their lives. Save the movies for short two hour entertainment anti sagas, which is their strength and I enjoy throughly.

Children version of LOTR is not for me

Characters are cartoonish and not in a good way, especially the king of underground creatures.. Laws of physics sometimes work and sometimes not. Dwarves sometimes have supernatural strength but they can't win against enemies. And constant comic relief, my god... There is nothing adult, dramatic or dark in this movie. And it ends with damn eagles saving the day as always. Well, take the damn eagles to the your final destination, why don't you and skip the whole movie? I can't believe that I had such high expectations and spend extra money and time to watch it in IMAX / HFR / 3D. Hobit is not for the fans of LOTR and no amount of high tech can change that.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Disappointment

First, this movie looks like it was filmed using a camcorder. It was so far removed from the first 3 films visually Im truly amazed they released it for public viewing. Second, the whole HFR thing is an epic fail as far as I'm concerned. There were several occasions where I could swear they were attempting to imitate a Keystone cops feature. Third, the movie strayed so far from the books storyline they really shouldn't have used the title. In all, the movie and the format I watched it in (IMAX 3D HFR) was 2.5 hours of torture. I have no plans on watching any sequels to this debacle and will avoid watching anything being shown in the HFR format.
