    The horror!

    by

If this movie was fiction, I wouldn't be writing a review. It was funny, silly at times and what you'd expect from a Michael Bay movie (maybe entertaining?).

The movie itself wasn't bad. What makes this movie horrible is that it is a true story. I liken it to watching a Dateline special about how a husband kidnaps his wife and kills her unborn baby, and then Michael Bay gets a hold of it and decides to make it sexy and fun.

It's hard to be entertained at the expense of such sad events that affected so many people (despicable or not) and to feel any joy about such desperate and deprived acts.

In theory, this should be a Go!, but real life horror as fun? No!

    Pain & Gain

    by atc07

This film is something completely different than what you would expect from Michael Bay! At times you have to remind yourself that this is actually based on a true story.

Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson make for an entertaining pair and bring lots of muscle and some good humor to Pain & Gain. If your a fan of either actor then you will definitely get a kick out of this movie.

This was way different than I expected but I enjoyed it. Just be sure to leave the kids at home, there are some parts that will make you a little squeamish!

    PAin and gain

Hmm where to start ...just to say that some "true stories " should not be put on the screen. I would not tell any body to go watch this stinker...can I have my money back??

    Painful!

    by

The only way to describe this movie is the word "painful!" Yes, the movie is based on a true story; however, the acting was horrible, the cinematography was worse, and the humor was non-existent (despite what the previews suggested).

    Billed as a comedy...its not

    by Outis

I don't mean that it just isn't funny. It really isn't a comedy. IT was amazing only in how horrible it was. Based upon a true story, this was a story that didn't need retelling and I'm stunned that it has the cast and director that it does. don't waste your money and don't waste your time when it comes out on cable.

    Pain & Gain

    by

My husband & I really like Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson, so I figured this was a must see for us.
The one thing about the movie that suprised me the most was that this is actually based on a true story. I had heard a few basic things about the outline of the story, but the movie actually shocked me and blew me away.
The first thing I have to say is that I can't believe these idiots managed to get away with the crimes as long as they did. It doesn't say much about the abilities of the Miami/Dade county police department. Mark & Dwayne give great performances and both really stretched their acting abilities in this one.
It is so unrealistic that I had to keep reminding myself that it all actually happened!
On the whole, I have to say that we enjoyed it immensely. I think that having a somewhat sick sense of humor helps, as we couldn't help laughing at some of the stupid, sick things these guys did. We might even have to own this one!!

    Slow and boring

This was thee worst Michael Bay movie I have ever seen. I know it was based on a true store but it started off so slow and dragged on from there. There were some funny moments but not at all what I expected. Great cast to look at but that's about it.

Mark Wahlberg played an awesome role as did Dwayne Johnson. This movie was fun to watch, although it will not win any type of award it was still worth seeing.

    Pain & Gain Painful

I love the actors. Normally love their movies. The acting was good. The story, however, made the movie too hard to watch. I wanted to leave before it was over because it was so disturbing, but I was afraid something would happen to redeem the movie. Unfortunately, it didn't. Still love Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson though!

    Not what I thought...

    by mbzcez

...it was going to be. I was ready for a "serious" theme with a lot of comedy thrown in. I was NOT ready for how heavy it got with the beatings and murders. I think the movie went way over board and I wouldn't recommend it.

    All Pain No Gain

Little did I know this was a true story but in the end I don't know if it even mattered. Also, after seeing the previews more than a few times it turned out to be much better, I think. The only thing this movie really has it that it is fact based and in being so makes it seem more but it's weak or just shy of something I might say is "good" or "I'll see it again" but I did like it though. Another thing, it could be some Miami thing that I can't really identify because I'm from the west coast. Good acting by Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie as motivated weight lifters and Ed Harris had a small role but didn't really do anything to turn heads like he's capable of. tony Shalhoub I never heard of before but did a job as the victim of extortion. go See it.

    their pain was my gain

wow. i knew from listening to the press interviews with mark wahlberg that this movie was based on a true story about some bone headed body builders who went totally to the left. i don't always enjoy michael bay's movies, but he did a great job on this one. lots of snappy, outrageously funny dialogue and situations and it is a case of truth being stranger than fiction. i love that at a certain point in the movie the words 'this is still based on a true story' comes up, because you start to think 'this couldn't have gone down like this.' anyway, dwayne johnson is fantastic as is the surprising ed harris. tony shaloub is a standout. mark wahlberg is good too as the sociopath who seems to have all the bad ideas and attracts other losers to help him execute. anthony mackie and rebel wilson are a hoot as the couple that seems to hook up way too fast. i would go see it just to be able to shake my head and go 'damn, i can't believe this.'

Probably THE worst movie I have ever seen!

If we had ridden separately to the theater - I would have walked out. Yes, there existed a few little chuckles - maybe 5 in an entire 2 hours. Other than that, there was basically no redeeming value to this "entertainment".

    Not what I was expecting

The trailer made this seem like a wacky comedy but it wasn't a comedy in the traditional sense. The humor rests in the boundless stupidity of the three bodybuilders but it was tragic humor since their stupidity resulted in horrendous crimes. The old axiom that the truth is stranger than fiction certainly applies. I credit Micheal Bay for not making these characters heroes or antiheroes. He reveals them to be the cretins they are. That said, the movie was entertaining and I recommend it. I went home and researched the story after seeing the movie so it did resonate. The acting was top-notch, along with direction and cinematography. Any fan of true crime will enjoy this film.
