Mama won't leave you crying for your mama

    by

Teen thriller at it's best. Mama could have been a much better film, I feel they left too much on the cutting room floor for anyone who is experienced in the horror genre. Thirty years and counting as a horror fan this movie billed to thrill and was mostly disappointing. The good: Some really fun special effects, enough bumps in the night to get me to jump x2, enough life story to get you connected with the characters. The bad: An ending spoiler built into the script, an already overplayed theme within the genre, a B movie role played by an A list actress in what should be an A list film, opportunities to build upon certain parts that are left dead (no pun intended). Worth the matinee price to get the theater effect, but otherwise I'd wait for the DVD.

Very Scary - Jump in your seat!

    by Memfan

.Loved the plot, and the scary factor. Very good movie. There were a few things i didn't like at the end, they showed too much of the mama character - it kinda made the whole suspense of who she was fall out. Maybe we have all become so jaded with technology now where we see great animation and yawn. Not sure if they set up the end for a sequel. This movie was well made, had a great plot. Not sure i would go to the theater to see it, definitely see it on the net when available

    It Delievered IMO

I'm already a Jessica Chastain fan, and she didn't let me down. I fell in love with her in The Help, then she transformed for The Debt, and again for this movie (I haven't seen ZDT yet.)

The cinematography was way better than most horror flicks. I'm always weary of child actors (it seems that cute trumps talent most of the time,) but both little girls were amazing.

The plot was formulaic horror fodder, but the ending was definitely outside the formula.

Without the acting, this movie would have been a "so-so" for me.

    MAMA

    by

The ominous film, MAMA, was filled with excitement, sporadic comedy, and heart racing scenes. The plot was dynamic and creative. An enjoyable film that will have you jumpy.

    Awesome Movie!

    by

For once there is a character in a horror film that isn't stupid, go Annabel (Jessica Chastain) !!! The child actors are extremely talented, you believe they are the creepy kids. The music definitely scares you. Many cool startling shots. The film also has a beautiful theme which is a plus. This is a must go if you love horror, especially psychological horror.

    *shaking my head in disgust*

This movie was so unbelievably dumb, and that was putting it politely. The idea behind the movie would have been great, if it had been executed correctly. This was just a big cheesy mess of a movie. The "ghost" was a joke and what was with the hair floating around on the floor? And the end where the "ghost" kept pushing the ladies head down when she was trying to crawl after them to save the girls?? What is with that? I took my mom to see this movie and I left feeling like I really did a horrible thing to her by taking her. I almost sent her a dozen roses the next day just to try and make up for the 2 hours she will never get back. I have to question anyone's sanity who rated this movie above a "No". I have to go huddle in the corner in the fetal position just for reliving this nightmare now...........

    Yo Mama...

Okay, before we get to the meat of it, was this the worst movie ever? No. It was creepy during the build up, mainly because it left a lot to the imagination, like horror movies of old. And then, enter the cgi effects.

Now I know I'm in the minority here but things crawling on the floor, short of them being gigantic camel spiders or a man-eating alligator, isn't scary. Especially when it's at best a wig with arms.

I was so disenchanted because 1. I love horror and am still waiting to be scared by a modern day movie. 2. Guillermo Del Toro's name was on it. And I... adore... him.

Is this a movie worth full ticket price? No. Cheap seats on a date? Yeah, it's got some jump.

Overall it starts down a path that can be twistedly dark and ends up with a music number short of a kids movie.

PS: Please stop with the crawling bit... it's just overdone now.

well directed but with stupid ending

There are plenty of good Horror spots and transitions for funny to creepy are done well, but why the director didn't audience test the ending is a mystery to me as a different ending would have garnered an excellent review. As it is there were opportunities to wrap up earlier, or go with a clear sequel tease but he does neither and leaves the audience scratching their heads over poor choice of multiple endings.

    Please Mama No...............

Very good movie until the ending. Just could've gone a different direction than it did. Ending left alot to be desired. Still, go see and judge for yourself!

    Decent story with good acting..

The movie keeps you engaged and it is not to gory or gross. A one time watch, but given an option, I would watch something else.

    Unintentionally hilarious.

    by

Saw this last night and for the most part I thought it was okay. It has lots of jump scares and atmospheric special effects, but that's not enough to make a scary movie good for me. I think most of the funny business came from the character of Lily and her feral delights.

As other reviewers have said the actions of the characters didn't always make sense. It was like they went and brought back in all the things you shouldn't do in a scary movie that will get you killed or hurt and put that in Mama.

I liken it to The Ring and The Grudge with little kids and no other major surprises. It was most similar to The Ring. They tried to change the plot with a different ending, but I don't know, it just fell flat for me overall. See it if you like Del Toro's films and being scared silly...and I do mean silly.

    A mother's love never dies...

    by

Mama started out very strong as a snow-cold psychological drama, then subtly shifted into an elegant mystery. The cinematography and scoring greatly contributed to the dark aura of the film. Praises granted, the final act was embarrassing: drawn out and cliched. The ending was completely implausible and raised more questions than answers. Despite the finale, the first 80% of the film was masterful; stylish, genuinely emotional and crushingly atmospheric. The main actors turned in fine performances, namely Chastain as the reluctant mother-to-be.
3.5/5. (If the last 20 minutes of the film were less ridiculous, I would gladly grant Mama a 4.5/5, seriously).
It is worth seeing? Absolutely, it's damn scary.
Will you enjoy the ending? I really doubt it.

Oh, and as a side-note, don't take young kids to see this, please. The lady in front of our group took her poor little 7 year old. Needless to say, the child walked out within the first 20 minutes!

    Mama Delivers!

A fan of Guillermo's work already, and not disappointed with Mama! Nice to see a movie in this genre that has such high production values, yet still delivers the "gotcha" moments that horror fans crave. Great visual effects (some remniscent of the Ring) and cool story. My friend (a seasoned horror movie junkie) literally jumped out of his seat during one scene. We laughed for a while after that. Nice coup to have Jessica Chastain open your movie, right on the heels of her stellar (possibly Oscar winning?) performance in Zero Dark Thirty. I'm scared of Mama! You will be too!
