    Promised Land

    by Sj aol

A well-made film with an attractive cast that makes a case against the fracking extraction of domestic natural gas. The case is made in the context of dishonest manipulation by an immensely wealthy corporation, but without discussion of the brief mention in the credits of film financing from Abu Dhabi, a major oil exporter. Until/unless the credits are altered to give full direct dislosure & discussion of the financing I recommend against the film.

    Clever but moralizing

Big business seals deals regardless of who gets hurt, who gets trampled, and what the outcome is for years ... I did feel like it was written by a smug, tree hugging Hollywood executive as an educational film ... lots of moral themes the greatest of which is that big business and "f-you money" as Matt Damon's character called it, will destroy our ability to produce safe food and to have safe water.

    Promised Land

    by

The cinematography was kind of corny. Who would run a sink full of water in a public bathroom to wash their face?

The acting was pretty good, but I came away thinking that it really isn't that hard to write a screenplay.

The hard part is selling the movie to investors and studios. I concluded that John Krasinski probably wrote this movie and enlisted Matt Damon for the star power.

It is good to see JK have other opportunities outside of The Office though.

    Promised Land

    by behaze

Movie was just okay. I was not thrilled but not disappointed either. If you don't like drama movies with no action, then you may want to skip this one.

    Unoriginal and unexciting.

The good cast is the only thing that will carry though from credits to credits. Otherwise, this is an unoriginal story with a predictable ending. Wish I had watched it for free on HBO. At least I didn't watch Hobbits...

    Awful Movie

    by fzera

Go if you are an environmental wacko, hate big business, and love getting our energy sources from countries that hate us. You can't miss the message.
Besides, the movie was tedious and boring. It also had a very predictable ending.

    A movie about Integrity?

    by whemmer

Yes, believe it or not. No monsters emerging from the earth, no creatures with magic powers. No. Just an honest and refreshing tale about a man who loses his job but saves his soul. Co-written by Matt Damon, who leads a fine cast of major (McDormand, Krasinski, Holbrook) and minor characters, it doesn't try to preach or be holier-than-thou. A tale of personal transformation which poses some big questions about our society, but doesn't pretend to have the answers.
Those answers are left for the townspeople (and us) to wrestle with. Thanks, Matt Damon.

    Lies tell me lies!

    by dbfgjco

Not only is the subject matter right in my wheelhouse, Damon et al bring the lies and distortion right into my backyard. Quite literally.

Oh, and did I mention that the film was partly funded by a state-owned media company in the United Arab Emirates?

Let the fact checking begin. Please let it begin!

AN EASY, RELAXING FILM ABOUT THE PLUS AND MINUS OF "FRACKING" FOR NATURAL GAS!

There are times when the comfort of predictability, a cocoon of complacency is the perfect anecdote in a season of massive doses of mayhem, morbidity, dismemberment and destruction...
?Promised Land? is the fare, pabulum, alleviating the the gloom of ?Les Miz,? ?Django Unchained?; a dose of ?fracking? (a combination of water, sand and chemicals, hydraulically drilled into the ground to release natural gas) leads to a mildly entertaining film about the explosion of modern technology and its harmful/healing effects on a small farming community, slowly suffocating from financial duress...
It is sweetly satisfying forecasting the conclusion; ?Promised Land? gifts the viewer wholesome folks, devoid of pretense; illusions rooted in reality; they want to educate their children, fix their tractors; enjoy the local pub on Friday evenings. For many, this is as good as it gets...
    TWO AND 1/2 STARS!!

    PROMISED LAND

WHILE I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD GO AND SEE THIS MOVIE TO INFORM THEMSELVES OF THE DANGERS TO OUR LAND FROM FRACKING FOR NATURAL GAS
AND THE ACTING WAS SUPERB, I FOUND THE SCRIPT NOT TO BE ENGAGING; COULD BE THE CHARACTERS WERE UNDERDEVELOPED. A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT FROM SUCH AMAZING TALENT.

    PROMISED LAND

THIS MOVIE SHOULD REMIND EACH OF US TO PROTECT GOD'S EARTH! WHILE SHALE FLAGGING MAY BE A MEANS OF RELEASING NATURAL GAS, IS IT THE BEST WAY? IT'S A SUTTLE BUT AFFECTIVE POLITICAL PIECE! MATT DAMON DOES A FINE JOB; REALISTIC CHARACTER. HOPING, EACH PERSON THINKS LONG AND HARD ABOUT LIVING ONE WITH NATURE!

    A complex morality tale

    by

The Promised Land could have been an environmentalist vs corporations film, but Matt Damon made one for thinkers. Damon's character is "a good man" who tries to do good. He also portrays a character who does not come to easy answers about a complex issue. I highly recommend this film.

    Promised Land worth waiting for!

It's a "cute" treatment of a serious issue, but a superficial treatment. Pretty slow moving for the theater, but could be okay to watch at home. Wait to see it on Netflix or OnDemand and save a few $.

    Start the conversation

This film is meant to be a part of the public conversation on natural gas and the ways to obtain it. Imperfect though it may be, it is part of the palette of views on the subject.
