    Realistic Look at Aging

I had just been on an Opera Tour, so I had such respect for the singing voice and the hard work to maintain the talent. This movie captured the emotions of losing that voice. Excellent!

A love story for the ages

    by hit2bid

From the get go I sensed a wonderful love story was going to develop and indeed, developed. The story line is a tear jerker, and passed my doze rating; this was no doze movie. GO SEE IT, A MUST SEE, well worth the admission.

    Quartet

    by

Great Job by the special cast - loved the music and the characters! So touching at times and so funny too. We laughed and cried and found ourselves wanting to meet each and every character in this wonderful characterization of a real place in England. Its probably more appropriate for those of us who have a "bit more experience" in life - if you have aging parents or are approaching "middle age", go and enjoy it! Probably not so interesting for small children however. None were in the theater during the showing we attended.

    Good movie, great music

    by

Saw Quartet yesterday and really enjoyed it. I love Maggie Smith and all the other parts were good, too. They used real, top qualitity musicians for the supporting roles and they were brilliant.

Dustin Scored! ...and so does everyone else.

If you think you know what this film is about, guess again. Life is just not that simple.

There is a good deal of depth developed, a strong touch of realism, sweetness, objectivity, not to mention beauty and joy. If you want to enjoy a truly entertaining movie, if you love excellent acting, a very well written script, and what is an obvious joy to have directed, go and see it.

The actors don't have to struggle here. There is a real script, a talented director, and people are really drawn into the film, from minute one to last moment. There's really no morbidity to speak of, but a realistic storyline that I think almost anyone can relate to. Young or old, you just may find you're surprised at how much you enjoy it. I was.

Dustin, you outdid yourself, my man!

    Quartet

If you are of an age and like music, this is a "must go". Maggie Smith and her inmates are truly wonderful. I wish my parents had been in this beautiful retirement home!

    QUARTET

    by

A heartwarming movie with splendid actors. I didn't realize Dustin Hoffman had used actual musical performers of the past. I will see it again so I can see their before and now faces. Maggie Smith is wonderful as ever as well as the all a.ctors. I loved it

    Quartet

    by cgmarsh

My husband and I loved this movie. Great cast of characters who gave dignity to the elderly. Music was lovely. The ending left us wanting more. For the over 60 crowd it gave us a great story with no violence and yet some wonderful lines. Loved the relationship between the young and old characters. I hope Dustin Hoffman continues to direct movies with classy story lines. Maggie Smith, as always, was a true "grand dame" of the theater. One of her looks can say it all. I'd recommend this film for everyone, it leaves you with a good feeling.

    Good Cast - timid screenplay

    by wponsot

The cast is superb, Maggie Smith & Michael Gambon together again - a dream shattered by a lackluster screenplay. The movie as enjoyable as a whole however - worth seeing, though worth waiting for the dvd

    A Hiigh-Quality Quartet!

What a rare pleasure these days: a fillm with first-rate acting, writing and direction, about actual people. The multi-generation gap between seniors and teenagers is played with complete respect for both - how often do we see that nowadays? The locale is a delight - I want to live in that house. And there's music everywhere, all the time. A first-rate chamber piece. Highly recommended.

Verdi With a Side of Schmaltz

A lovely film that's part "Downton Abbey" (Look! There's Maggie Smith playing the same character she always plays!), part "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" and entirely charming, if not entirely original. There are several utterly poignant moments and the scenery is always lush and verdant -- as if the English country landscape is taunting the fading characters whose golden days appear to be long past. But as one might expect, it turns out their most important 'roles' have yet to be played. The music is gorgeous and the end credits (don't leave without seeing them) are lovely. There are several missteps, but they in no way take away from the larger, more glorious aspects of the film. (The 'urban youth' storyline -- thin and underdeveloped -- feels gratuitous and tagged-on, rather than organic, believeable.) Opera fans: delight in a lovely turn by the ever radiant Dame Gwenyth Jones.

This movie is a real treat!!

We throughly enjoyed this movie, the music & the acting were both extremely enjoyable. Maggie Smith was as always a delight, however the other actors did a wonderful job also. We were very impressed at how the actual musicians were used in the movie, & then given recognition for their past achievements in the closing credits. What a generous gesture that was! It was a pleasure to see actors who did not look like they'd spent thousands getting plastic surgery & who honestly embraced the aging process with no excuses. We will all be there someday & it's to the credit of Dustin Hoffman that aging was portrayed with such compassion & humor. The cinamatography was gorgeous too, the building & the grounds lent a beautiful background to the story & did credit to the english countryside. I had never heard of this movie before & am so glad I read the synopsis on Fandango or I might have missed it!

    A Great TIme

I had to drag my husband to see this movie. I knew I would like seeing my favorite British stars but he thought it would be boring. Much to his surprise he loved it as much as I did. Stunning scenery, superb acting, great music and a memorable plot make this movie one of our favorites.

Great movie for the "older" viewer. Maggie great as usual. Dustin Hoffman knows of what he directs in this beautifully filmed and meaningful film. A pleasure to see.

    Lovely Film

Fabulous acting - excellent script-writing - some beautiful cinematography. What's not to like? A bit melancholy, but very believeable characters, and an ultimately happy ending. Also, lots of fabulous music, operatic and instrumental. I'd happily see it again. If you saw and liked "Exotic Marigold Hotel," "Quartet" is in a similar vein, but rather more optimistic.
