    Realistic Look at Aging

I had just been on an Opera Tour, so I had such respect for the singing voice and the hard work to maintain the talent. This movie captured the emotions of losing that voice. Excellent!

    Quartet

Underrated. Superbly-acted and directed, very funny--a laugh a minute, heart-warming and true. Why hasn't this film been more widely distributed? Is someone afraid it wouldn't appeal to younger or mass audiences?

    Refreshingly uplifting

A wonderful cast of actors (who doesn't love Maggie Smith) who do a beautiful job of reminding all that love is timeless. More than a couple laugh out loud moments,

Verdi With a Side of Schmaltz

A lovely film that's part "Downton Abbey" (Look! There's Maggie Smith playing the same character she always plays!), part "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" and entirely charming, if not entirely original. There are several utterly poignant moments and the scenery is always lush and verdant -- as if the English country landscape is taunting the fading characters whose golden days appear to be long past. But as one might expect, it turns out their most important 'roles' have yet to be played. The music is gorgeous and the end credits (don't leave without seeing them) are lovely. There are several missteps, but they in no way take away from the larger, more glorious aspects of the film. (The 'urban youth' storyline -- thin and underdeveloped -- feels gratuitous and tagged-on, rather than organic, believeable.) Opera fans: delight in a lovely turn by the ever radiant Dame Gwenyth Jones.

a little dull around the edges

    by sfk1017

True, as older adults we like watching movies about a generation of people we can relate to and yes this was directed by actor Dustin Hoffman. Overall the movie is charming, but there was really not enough time used to explain the histories of the performers, build their characters or give them enough realistic time to reconnect. Nobody just starts talking as if they were back in the good old days without lots more tension and time to heal the wounds.

Also, quite frankly, I think it would have been far more realistic if he used actors who could really sing so seeing the Quartet actually perform would have made a major difference in the ending. Hearing the familiar voice of Pavrotti signing the quartet was distracting. And not seeing them sing made it fake. Also the soprano who did sing was quite obviously singing along to someone elses record. She could never have hit those high notes at her age. they could have taken the music orchestration down a scale to accommodate her.

    Quartet

A tour de force for Maggie Smith. The acting was outstanding. Sets, wardrobe, perfect as backgrouind. A wrenching portrayal of a life in change at a time when one needs peace, quiet and stability. The results of this lady's choices turned out well.

    Lovely Film

Fabulous acting - excellent script-writing - some beautiful cinematography. What's not to like? A bit melancholy, but very believeable characters, and an ultimately happy ending. Also, lots of fabulous music, operatic and instrumental. I'd happily see it again. If you saw and liked "Exotic Marigold Hotel," "Quartet" is in a similar vein, but rather more optimistic.

    Quartet

My husband and I loved this movie. Great cast of characters who gave dignity to the elderly. Music was lovely. The ending left us wanting more. For the over 60 crowd it gave us a great story with no violence and yet some wonderful lines. Loved the relationship between the young and old characters. I hope Dustin Hoffman continues to direct movies with classy story lines. Maggie Smith, as always, was a true "grand dame" of the theater. One of her looks can say it all. I'd recommend this film for everyone, it leaves you with a good feeling.

    Good movie, great music

    by

Saw Quartet yesterday and really enjoyed it. I love Maggie Smith and all the other parts were good, too. They used real, top qualitity musicians for the supporting roles and they were brilliant.

    Heartwarmer!

    by ktdnl

We really enjoyed this movie. The music was great and so was the acting. The humor is subtle but very funny. It's never too late to turn over a new leaf. This is not for kids, not that there is anything objectionable, young kids just won't relate to the situation.

    Quartet

Fantastic story, with great people in roles they worked perfectly. Dustin Hoffman directed the Quartet extremely well. Wonderful setting which made it all the more realistic. The whole cast was wonderful and giving the cameos of them at the end was a tribute to their talent and years of work. Hope it gets some Oscars.

Funny, sad, real... in a way

Dustin Hoffman did a super job directing "Quartet." In films about special expertise in a field, the leading actors usually give off twin whiffs of disconnection with the field and of exaggeration as if to make up for their lack of knowledge. A decent screenplay--and this is a lovely one--can somewhat help the leads with that gap. Here, the leads are amid people who have actually spent their lives in the field; many are still active in the field. Hence, an unusual depth of involvement, and a concomitant grace and flow: nothing seems artificial.

It gave me a start, though, near the end of the film, to see stars such as Dame Gwyneth Jones actually performing--true to life, but as fictional film characters, not as themselves. Those faces & voices still belong to real people, and so the characters suddenly seem a strange hybrid of truth and fiction. It was almost shocking to hear Dame Joan's and Luciano's voices in the "Rigoletto" quartet, layered over made-up characters.

Not for the young at heart...

    by

... unless you are interested in knowing what life will be like at some point in the future. I often feel that our youth of today is not taught to "appreciate" the knowledge and experience of the elderly as they used to be. It is a touching movie, and shows just how life is, once we have been there, and done that. It does a heart good to just sit and enjoy quality film for a couple of hours, now and then, rather than things crashing, destroying, killing, or hurting. This one you just walk away going "ahhhhhhh...", that is if you let it. Then again, when the end of the sub-titles ran (which every single person sat through), there was such a silence of reverence, it was lovely.

    My wife loved it

We don't go to the movies much. When we do we're often disappointed. But since my wife is a fan of the show Downton Abbey, I figured it was a safe bet. I also enjoyed it. It wasn't a hilarious, mind blowing, emotional rollercoaster type of movie. But it is very well done with beautiful scenery and is well written and cast perfectly. I loved that they cast old folks that were actually big opera stars in their day. My wife loved it and that is a good thing for me!
