    Could've Been a Greater Flick

    by

I love interweaving stories and this takes it to another level entirely. The only thing that bugged me was the interpretation of the BIG message of the film being that " we are all connected somehow, somewhere." A more thoroughly thought out screenplay would've benefited the film itself. Instead, what's left is just a mock up of the same actors, playing different roles, attempting to relay that BIG message. And in short, it makes this film a bit flat.

Three hours of my life I will never get back

I'm familiar with the book, which is cool. However, this convoluted production of six confusing stories all told simultaneously with no pay off, left me with a headache. Don't bother.

    Best film of the year

It's about souls in transition, how all of life is connected, and the redeeming power of love. It's also alot to absorb in a three hour movie. I saw it twice. The first time, I just went with the movie and let it take me to places i neither expeced nor understood. The second time, I looked for specific things and enjoyed it so much more. Now that my theater has it in IMAX, I'll be seing it a third time soon.

The key to understanding what you're seeing on screen is the comet birthmark; not only who has it, but who doesn't have it.Toward the end of the film, look quickly for a character who has it as a scar and not a birthmark (the only player to have it on two of his characters).

This is the year's best film to date, but I wouldn't bet money on it winning.

It's confusing until everything sort of comes together towards the end

I dont understand why they had to portray 'Asians' with that sort of makeup (I thought they were supposed to be aliens), but other than that it's really fun to watch how one actor/actress can turn into like 6 different people and you probably won't realize exactly who's who until the credit starts rolling

the movie has interesting views and stories all intertwined together; while I was watching it I didn't really get it, but now that I think back upon it, I think I may want to watch it again

    Wha???

Even though it had great potential with great actors, CLOUD ATLAS left me cold, bewildered, and perplexed.
If it was a book I could go back and reread what I didn't understand, try to make some sense of what I just saw. I tried to keep my mind open to what unfolded before me, but it all was convoluted to me Unfortunately this movie just kept plugging on [APPROXIMATELY 3 HOURS], leaving me wondering when it would all gel and take on some meaning.
The cinematography was beautiful, Tom Hanks was his usual excellent. But that wasn't enough.
I left the theater about 30 minutes before it ended not caring what happened to any of them. My friend who joined me left an hour before that.
I'd rate it right up there with VANILLA SKY

    Cloud Atlas: Multi-Layered Master pies

Tom Hanks, Halle Berri, two of the heavy weights in a stellar cast that twist turns jumps and dives in time, space, and epochs, constructing a fast changing and breathtaking journey through existance and relevence. The storylines shifts, unsettleingly so, at times, through various storylines, using the same characters, simultaneously or individually, as they all, become a necessary part of the whole. Just as the final masterpiece is finished, published, and promptly buried the work has been brought to life in all it's gory, glourios-ness.

Tries to blow your mind, only blows your evening.

    by

This should be called "Hey look - I can tell the same story 8 different ways at the same time!" With plenty of opportunities for profound cause-and-effect between multiple realities, Cloud Atlas instead opts for subtle correlations, some of which you have to try pretty hard to notice. As impressive as it is that the main actors each play several characters, the acting as a whole fails to meet expectations. I'm a big Tom Hanks fan, but this is a rare miss.

    follow me

Cinematic karma at it's finest. The balances of the universe, along with purposes of life, can be contemplated without be overwhelming. Truly simple message with a panoramic view of a classic.

    Complicated but interesting

To many stories running at the same time...specially during the first half of the movie. he feeling of being lost invade me during that half. The second half improves in this sense and introduces critics to society that are very interesting. At the end you have a mix feeling of understanding the point but loosing something...kind of waiting to see the interconnection of the multiple stories, besides the phenotype of some characters.
    I like it!!!!

    Great movie but no climax

    by

I expected this movie to be a little like Slumdog Millionaire where the audience would be introduced to different sequences but it would all come together at some point.
However, even though there was strong emotion and amazing action throughout the movie there was not a climax and the stories never connected at the end like I expected.
It was a really long movie (at least 3 hours long) with great stories. The best way I can describe it is that its is like 6 movies in one.
I would say go see it but do not expect it to evolve like movies normally do (climax, plot, and a common conclusion).

A uniquely creative must see film!

    by J242

Now this is the kind of film I wish Hollywood and the entertainment companies in general would try to make more of in that it is not easily categorized as one "kind" of film or another. CA has sci-fi, romance, comedy, drama, action, suspense, intrigue and more as all of the story lines have their own entire arching themes that tie in with each other in a simple but at the same time complex way. There is not only something in this film for everybody but everyone embodies something for us. I want more intelligent, thought provoking films like this and will support the Wachowski siblings and Tom Twyker (of Run Lola Run fame) as much as I can to hopefully reward their hard work and encourage others to go outside the standard formulaic movie-making practices so many seem to rely on.

I will own this the day it's available on Blu-Ray but hope to see it at least two more times in theaters and I highly recommend others to do the same!

    Cloud Atlas

We loved this movie, both my husband and I, and from the very start. Albeit, it is now easy to follow plot wise, the theme is constant and stated over and over again. Essentially, we are not just responsible for ourselves, rather our actions, permeate like ripples from a thrown rock, time after time. Whether or not you are religious. the implications are obvious, even scientifically: Every action creates a reaction. I like movies that change the perspective in which I think, that open life's door just a bit wider, that gives us a chance to see a different perspective. This movie will linger with you, perhaps what makes it best, it is so unselfish in motive, and that alone makes it worth the view.

    Too confusing ... Very annoying

    by Ally48

The end brings the story together but it seems to take FOREVER to get there. Was ready to walk out a number of times. I had not read ANYTHING about this movie in advance and it made it hard to follow. I couldn't keep up with who was who. When I understood the interwoven lives it was difficult to keep the "past lives" impact associated with the proper character.

The "language" of the future people was a mix of accents and VERY HARD TO UNDERSTAND. Because of this I felt like I lost a whole section of the flick. I left the theater more annoyed with wasting my time than expanding my mind.

    Cloud Atlas

Combine "Avatar" with a bit of Jules Verne, and mix in some "Last of the Mohicans", and you are headed towards understanding the approach to this fabulous film !
The actors each deserve praise for an outstanding array of performances, as each of the main stars plays several roles throughout the film ,(You must stay for the credits to see who was who!).
The special effects are amazingly captivating, counterbalanced by touching, heartfelt dialogue meant to alert your sensitivities to that ever present concern about,"man's inhumanity to man"!
Many scenes make your heart so sad....Definitely a "must see"!

    Must see Cloud ATlas

This movie begs you to focus on the characters as they move through time, changing their Karma. Evil begets evil and good begets blessings. There aren't any predictable plot twists and letting your senses flow with the story reveals and unwraps the treasure within. The beginning and end meet and all points in between show the continuity of existence. Above all, it is escapism at it's finest.
