    Cloud Atlas: Dense and Lyrical

A book written about a man?s near-death adventure that?s read by a composer who writes a beautiful symphony that is enjoyed to by a journalist whose big story is novelized by a young man who sends the manuscript to a publisher who has an humorously tragic turn of events in his life that is turned into a movie which is watched by an oppressed counter girl who gets inspired to rebel and in doing so becomes a religious symbol for a tribe of people hundreds of years after her passing.

A single thread that spans centuries. And it seems so easy.

It?s amazing how, when done properly, something so immense can be so simple. Hours pass in the blink of an eye, a moment is suspended, preserved forever.

    Cloud Atlas

We loved this movie, both my husband and I, and from the very start. Albeit, it is now easy to follow plot wise, the theme is constant and stated over and over again. Essentially, we are not just responsible for ourselves, rather our actions, permeate like ripples from a thrown rock, time after time. Whether or not you are religious. the implications are obvious, even scientifically: Every action creates a reaction. I like movies that change the perspective in which I think, that open life's door just a bit wider, that gives us a chance to see a different perspective. This movie will linger with you, perhaps what makes it best, it is so unselfish in motive, and that alone makes it worth the view.

    hard to follow

Walked into the movie without any reviews. We went just because the cast was great. They did a good job. The cinamtography was very good. I had never heard of it. If there is a book read it first. It made no sense and jumped all over the place. Saw it in iMax. The theater was only a third full. Everyone was quiet on the way out. 4 of us were confused.

    It's a multiple-see movie

I was a little confused during the first half, but then it all began to come clear. I was never bored or ready for it to be over before it was. It does require a second and probably a third viewing. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone--those who need things to be sequential and quickly wrapped up wouldn't appreciate it. And, of course, you have to be open to the idea of reincarnation.
The makeup was phenomenal and there were several characters that I was stunned when they were identified at the end. I never would have guess.

I need to see it several more times.

Other than the "fact" that this is based on a novel (which I have yet to read, and now I really do want to read it) it feels more like someone had an incomplete plot for three or four films, but no beginning and no end. Then, because most popular writers tend to write in the same vein, or with similar structures, someone noticed that some of the characters were relatable to each other, from one story to the next, it was decided to make a single film, linking the story lines together. They built a wrap around, and then stitched it all together to make a loosely palatable story. This is what it "feels" like, but I need to see it several more times, seriously. Also, the first couple of times viewing it is very difficult to not play the game entitled: "Guess who is playing THIS character" which is fun, but distracting from a complex and wonderfully woven story.

Very long, kinda hard to follow, but really awesome

This movie tries something perhaps too ambitious for its own good. It tries to tell five separate (but interwoven) stories in parallel all at once, each story taking place in a different time period. The time periods range from the 1800s to the 2100s and the parallel characters in each story are identifiable because they are portrayed by the same actor in all stories. This means that every actor has a truly impressive number of roles, making for one of the most impressive credit sequences in recent memory. The acting is phenomenal; Tom Hanks delivers about half a dozen very solid performances and everyone else performs similarly well. Despite there being multiple directors and writers, the film flows with a cohesiveness I didn't imagine possible with this sort of structure. Just in general, the film successfully pulls off the multiple story thing, ties them all together in an accessible way, provides great thrills, and manages to own nearly every genre of film all at once.

    Not for me.

Long. Had fun figuring out who each character was. Very gruesome scenes. Fairly lost most of the movie. And still lost when it was done. Wait for the video.

A Truncated Piece of Fascinating Junk ?

    by

The acting, the photography, the special effects, the dialogues, the messages are all excellent......yet, we leave the theater with a dobut whether this was a good movie or a truncated piece of fascinating junk. Nobody likes an arrogant movie, one which seems to suggest that we are dumbwits because we cannot follow the complex script. We are not idiots. Or are we? The chronology of psychological time in a book cannot be translated in the same manner in a movie. The language is different. I am disappointed that the producers did not realize that. Do they want to make money with a movie or do they just want to show how smart they are and how dumb we are? I felt like a child who was presented with a cartoon version of the Bible.....only without beggining, middle and end.

    Cloud Atlas

This movie was all over the place. If you like special effects this movie is for you. It was a makeup and costume orgy for a colorful cast of characters who played several roles and impersonations. Highly entertaining but as far as a clear cut message for a general moviegoer the message is up for grabs. I plan to read the novel and maybe see the movie again, perhaps than getting a better understanding of what is the meaning of this movie if there is one.

    Pay attention to the dialogue

If you pay attention to the dialogue, you will find the stories are all similar in point. I hope to see this film again in the near future. I enjoyed this movie and really got into it. But it is not a film to lose your attention span on. The acting is really superb. You can tell the actors enjoyed making this film. It says a lot about the society we are in if you pay attention. The cinematography was really spectacular. I would say the film is for adults in that the thought processes are really finely done and not overbearing in any way. Most of all, it will make you think. And there seem to be very few films out now that do that.

    Dont waste your time

    by

(To a movie that was so bad it resulted in my first review ever)
    > 30 mins - try to figure out what is going on with 6 different story lines
First hour -try to convince yourself that it must get better eventually
Second hour- action starts, wait for it to get better
Third hour- Movie finishes - Wonder why you stayed to the end -Lots of people snicker and laugh instead of applause - the smart ones left before the first hour was over

    Definitely a thinker

I particularly enjoyed the overall theme and the way it was woven throughout the different stories. While some characters were not fully developed, you could see their development from one life to the next. I'll need to see it again to catch everything I missed. Stay for the credits. I was fun to see who played the various roles.

There was some violence scattered throughout the movie, but it was brief and in context. Some of it was unnecessarily graphic though. Then there were some breast shots and sex scenes. Some were more blatant than others and could have been more tastefully handled without detracting from the movie. The language wasn't too bad. Mostly the "bad guys" used the language or it showed up when someone was angry, so in context. There were actually some very funny parts as well.

Overall, I liked it. I liked it a lot.

Irritating 1 to 2 minutes scenes running over 4 story lines throughout long movie

Forget trying to follow this story, the 2nd worst showing style behind the bouncy cam. Each scene lasts 2 minutes or less, some are 10sec, rotating through multiple stories. This goes on through the entire long movie. Id be happy with 5 minute scenes. This style is irritating and annoying the longer it lasts. Trying to follow this story line, not likely, they don't truly get connected in the end. One of the stories includes a lepracaun like subconscious that doesn't do anything to the story, why didn't the other stories have a subconsciuos.
The positives - the scenes and sets are super quality, was great for Imax.

    Excellent Cinematics!

    by

If you liked Inception, then you must watch this movie. It was very well made. The storyline is the only thing I did not like very much. I felt the link between all the smaller stories were very subtle. Almost like they were forced together. And the characters played by the same actors, shared no characteristics, except for who they fall in love with may be. Nevertheless, you are sure to be mesmerized by the overall movie.
