    Remind me Green Soylent

Remember "green soylent is people!" well this cleverly made movie has elements of it. But by far is better and ambitious. Although a times it seems to drag, I think is purposely created in order for the viewer to reflect in the connections and 6 degrees of separation of each story. The cast is amazing and all of them had chance to show how good they are by playing so different characters in each story. The music is enchanting and really helps the movie to elevated it to a soothing and melancholic stance where all characters without realizing are supporting each other in their tasks to make their world a better one. Who can at this time argue against having a movie where the main topic is the betterment of the world? I love when the father in law says to the daughter: " you will make no difference, your efforts will be only a drop in the imense ocean..." the son in law responds "what's the ocean made of is of millions of such drops..."

    Thought-provoking!

Visually stunning movie with some really big names. Unfortunately my friends and I stopped trying to follow the plot lines after the first hour and just sat back and enjoyed the action for the next 2 hours. We were talking about the movie afterwards for a good hour trying to figure out how the stories were connected, the characters each actor played, which soul was which, etc (with a little help from the wiki summary of the book). Even though the movie had to leave certain parts out, I think the final piece was well worth seeing in theaters. This movie really is one of those that you have to see a number of times to fully "get" so if that's not your cup of tea, then I guess this movie will leave you scratching your head. Go see this with friends so you can enjoy discussing it afterwards!

    Absolutely Amazing

    by

A creative and original piece of cinema that delves deep into the human condition and exposes us to the pain we can cause each other. A combination of romance, science fiction, thriller, mystery, comedy, and action this movie goes beyond the limitations of genre. Thought provoking and insightful it brings to life a story that transcends time; weaving a web of interconnected experiences that come together into a single, beautiful masterpiece. The scenery was beautifully done and the emotions so intense you could feel them in the very fabric of your being. At first, the viewer is immersed in scene after scene that leaves him or her confused but you quickly adapt to the presentation of the plot and understanding soon follows. Definitely not a movie for children as it depicts violence and disturbing imagery but those scenes are essential. If you're looking for a mindless film don't waste the seats on yourself; but if you enjoy substance and thought then this is the film for you.

    Loved it!

    by Jill333

For those who understand a little or want to know more about reincarnation, a must go! My favorite movie of the year, a wonderful message movie and very entertaining too, shows what some might think are disconnected stories of the same people but in different time periods. It's telling us about ourselves as we live over many lifetimes of experiences, hence the need to have the same actors playing different roles in different setting and time periods from hundreds of years ago to hundreds of years in the future. The future settings are especially imaginative and well done, the whole movie was beautifully crafted. I'll definitely go back to see this one again.

    A great one time ride...

This is one of those films that is amazing, well acted, and a great ride...But, you probably will only want to watch it once. Make sense? Tom Hanks was awesome as well as the rest of the cast. Solid acting, interesting storyline....It takes about half the film to really put it together before it all unfolds in the end segment. It's not the type of movie I'd want to leave to go to the bathroom b/c you may get lost once you return to your seat. Overall, good film. But, I will most likely not see it again, if that makes any sense. That's not to say it was bad, b/c it was good like I have stated.

Great visuals & interesting complex ideas

    by efedoto

Great visuals & interesting complex ideas, but maybe wasn't necessary to show some violence scenes so closely... Without them film would be appropriate for teenagers too.
Film makes us think again about the possibility of many lives that each soul has & might be returning in different times, eras & different circumstances.

    Fascinating, Visionary, GenreJumping ExtraOrdinary Filmmaking.

    by paza65

Sad that the critic reviews seem to miss the mark. Sure, there are plenty of people I know who wouldn't "get it". Gratefully, I am not one of those people. I was taken to this movie by friends who were curious. I am so thankful to them that I didn't completely listen to the critical reviews. I found myself uttering "amazing, amazing" so often throughout. Love story, action film, sci-fi flick, metaphysical rumination, history and comedy were all touched upon with great care. I am someone who is fascinated by Lana W's journey and can see bits of her new found freedom in so many scenes. This movie will stay with me for years.

    Must go, with proviso

If you've never given any thought to the possibility of having lived more than once, or the direct relationship between your actions and their effects, then this complex, compelling and well-delivered film of David Mitchell's novel won't make as much sense to you. Its complexity mirrors life itself, and its hovering perspective demands concentration. Thank goodness. Yes, we watch film for entertainment. It entertains. Yes, we watch to be kept on the edge of our seats. There are big enough question marks and action sequences to satisfy. Too many films only entertain, only titillate. The huge themes that are visited through a well-written screen adaptation, excellent cinematography, superb acting, and stunning FX, are meant to be thought-provoking, to rattle the cage. This is not pablum. It's hearty food for the inquiring mind. A more than worthy effort of the Wachowski siblings and Twyker to continue to address the larger picture of life in our amazing cosmos. I loved it.

    Good entertainment; excellent acting!

It would have been less entertaining but much more simple to just say "some of mankind will exist in each epoch who choose to take advantage of less aggessive members of homo sapiens." But that would have been less entertaining and not allowed the flashbacks to Matrix, Solent Green much less provide a showcase for the acting talent of the cast - wow! what acting and cross dressing! what makeup artists! If this is ever redone, make sure the curious dialect of the Valley Dwellers is clearly projected, otherwise we all wonder what the dialog may have been. True-true! Maybe a little throat cutting and blood flow is necessary for US audiences but there is a little too much for my taste. And what was the goal of the painted horsemen? They didn't seem to exercise their plunder and rapine capacity - but reminded me of reivers in Serenity.

All in all it was 2 hours and 44 minutes of good entertainment - and remember, not all people are nice!

    Cloud Atlas

It was an okay movie - If anyone asks me if it was worth seeing, I would say it depends on your likes. I like the actors that were in the movie and that was the only reason I went to see it.

Cloud Atlas: Avoid it like Hurricane Sandy!!!!

Cloud Atlas: Talk about "Bait and Switch"! While those behind production of this movie and their adoring critics claim it's a new and daring look at life (past, present and future) with probing questions about karma and reincarnation, don't believe it for a second!!! The only question I (and most of those leaving the theater near me) wanted to know the answer to was: 'How can I ever recover those three hours out of my life?'

Virtually the entire "plot" (and using that term loosely) was nothing more than rehashed, cut and paste snippets from successful films including: Blade Runner, Star Wars, Soylent Green (and they had the gall to mention it in one of the scenes!), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Cocoon, Amazing Grace, Silkwood, The China Syndrome, Brokeback Mountain, with a bit of Braveheart thrown in the mix. To say this movie was bad, would be a complete understatement. Why can't mainstream Hollywood treat their audience with the intelligence of a drama like, "Breaking Bad?"

    Cloud Atlas

An allegory on strength and weakness, cannibalism both literal and symbolic, wealth and value, truth and falsity, this film leaves you with thought provoking conversation starters. It is not for children! One error in the film was when the commander falls from the sky bridge presumably to his death and he reappears in the rescue of the Korean revolutionary. How could that be? Despite that flaw, it was certainly a surprise to see several actors portray opposite gender characters, only perceived through the final credits. I don't suppose that was a distraction, since the story lines intersected on various levels already. Will have to consider whether the same actors distracted or assisted in the comprehension of the film. The Title still baffles, since the music is entirely made up, perhaps to the point of the famed composer regarding the plight of his gay yemenensis. It is thought provoking on topics of power, energy, status, riches and truth, and advanced civilization.

    Cloud Atlas

We loved this movie, both my husband and I, and from the very start. Albeit, it is now easy to follow plot wise, the theme is constant and stated over and over again. Essentially, we are not just responsible for ourselves, rather our actions, permeate like ripples from a thrown rock, time after time. Whether or not you are religious. the implications are obvious, even scientifically: Every action creates a reaction. I like movies that change the perspective in which I think, that open life's door just a bit wider, that gives us a chance to see a different perspective. This movie will linger with you, perhaps what makes it best, it is so unselfish in motive, and that alone makes it worth the view.

    Love or Hate

    by

You'll either love or hate it. Similar feeling to The Tree of Life. I read the book first and missed a couple parts that were left out, but it would have added an extra hour. Must see, then decide for yourself.

    Beautiful, inspiring

I don't understand how anyone could not love this movie. It has action, killing, sex, romance. Oh, and an profound message. Granted, the message is simple...nothing new...that we are all connected and our actions intertwined throughout eternity. But its done in such a personal, effective way. A first its very confusing you don't think you can possibly keep track of all of the stories, but eventually you are involved in their lives and start to see how the stories come together. Its not perfect...sometimes the makeup was a little distracting for me. But all in all, breathtaking and beautiful.
