    Disapointing

    by

I have been looking forward to this movie for some time now. I LOVE sci-fi and this cast. This was not well done. It was often difficult to understand what some of the characters were saying. The tried to create a new dialect but it would slip in and out along with the accents. Some of the character make-up was poorly done and distracting. The story lines cut back and forth so quickly that you could really build momentum with all of the story lines or relate to all of the characters. You just didn't feel for many of them. This was a huge miss in a 3 hour movie. One of the story lines was meant to be comic relief I suppose but it felt very immature, disjointed and out of touch with what the overall tone of the film was.

I kept hoping that there would be some climatic rise at the end. Even that feel flat.

    Book Schmook, Go See This

I haven't read the book bkz friends say it's difficult to follow and the rewards are doubtful. Why see the movie then? Wasn't planning on it until a friend--who has read the book--suggested we go. Monday night, nothing else going on so yeah i went. Those expensive movie hot dogs are tasty. Dude, I was blown a-way. The movie is like a weird trip, with all these stories starting and stopping and continuing and bumping into each other on the way to the conclusion and a Message. I liked the Message but won't tell you what it is bkz that would be distilling the liquor down to like not even a taste. So, am damn glad I went out on a Monday night and saw this flick I had no interest in. And yeah the hot dog was good.

    HUH?

    by fed007

What a rambling wreck, I hang my head for the waste of good actors on this edifice to multi-story plots gone wrong. Could they have done better with the story, doubtful. If it was a book first maybe it was a good read, but probably one of those books best left untouched by cinema. I give it 5 stars on the money waster scale.

    Amazing Movie

    by cagnos

Cloud Atlas is an experience. Don't go into it trying to dissect it with your mind. Just let it wash over you. Beautiful experiential movie. It SHOWS you what life is all about rather than TELLS you.

Cloud Atlas ? I?m Not Okay, You?re Not Okay, But In Some Lifetime We Will Be

    by

I may have chosen something of a challenge for my first review. Cloud Atlas is an enigma. It?s an operatic creation, something altogether familiar and foreign. I can tell you right now I will be recommending this movie, so if that?s all you wanted, then there you have it. But the challenge is in deciding whether this is a good movie or a great movie.

    Terrible film

    by

Overwrought, incoherent, and stupid. This film purports to be about some grand notion of characters connected through the ages by their intertwined destinies. Perhaps that would make an interesting movie, in the hands of better filmmakers. But this one was complete garbage: poor performances from decent actors who clearly had no idea what to do with their roles, stilted dialog so bad it made Attack of the Clones look like Shakespeare, and a cast that plays multiple groups of characters in different scenarios over several centuries without showing us any character development - leaving the audience totally uninterested in the characters' fate. The plot was contrived and felt more like a vehicle for snappy editing cuts than any real narrative. Denouements tacked on as afterthoughts and mostly irrelevant to the nearly three hours that preceded them.

Summary: watching this film will cost three hours of your life that you will never get back and leave you none the better for it.

    Cloud Atlas

Great movie; a bit tough to follow Tom Hanks speaking jibberish english but after a while it got better. the story line is great and highly positive and optimistic: a feel good movie in a metaphysical sense.

    Breathtaking

    by

I hate to admit, but I had never heard of the book or this movie (I don't watch much TV), but saw a preview while seeing another movie and thought it looked intresting. The cast alone was enough to draw me in for a look!
Can I just say how much I LOVE this movie! Amazingly breathtaking! The story is just right in my opinion. It has a good mix of humor, romance, conflict, and action! The cinematics were beautiful and the story, while told interweavingly, are poignant and easy to follow if you have any measure of intelligence.
Yes this movie has lots of hidden detail, but for me, that is a sign of a good movie. One you actually want to see over and over to catch all those little hidden gems! I have seen it twice all ready and would readily go see it again!
This is a movie for people who think deep and search for equality in life. If you are a Scary Movie type this is NOT the movie for you! If you enjoyed movies like AI, The Matrix, and the like, you are sure to love this

    A Beautiful Film

I enjoyed Cloud Atlas very much. But it was not without its flaws. It was structured differently than the book, interlacing the stories rather than proceeding from one to the next, which I think contributes to the sense of confusion some viewers are expressing. Also, the stunt casting went a bit far. Every time a familiar face showed up in a different role, it was a bit distracting. The film is worth seeing, though, which is why my overall rating is a solid Go.

    wow

    by

I tried to over look all the negative reviews since there were more positive review and take a chance at watching this with an open mind but realized i should have taken the advice of the negative reviews and not watched at all. This movie was very long and very boring , extremely incoherent and confusing. The story lines (plots) and acting were very cheesy , the dialogue and language very difficult to understand, to many different story lines bouncing back and forth from each one for 3 whole hours. There were at least 3 or 4 times in the movie that you thought finally its going to end and it just kept on going and going. I understand where they were trying to go with this with reincarnation, that everything someone does bad or evil has an effect in the future but seriously 3 hours to try and get your point acoss which even then STILL didnt ever make sense. Total waste of time and money. The only positve thing was the scenery, lol.

    Good, but not Great...

    by LMarieW

Saw this today and was quite happy with it. Cloud Atlas is one of my all time favorite books and although they leave out a bit and change the delivery of the stories, I loved the movie. Tom Hanks is quite amazing in all of his characters and I was impressed with Hugh Grant, in one of his roles, as the futuristic crazed tribesman. All in all, not sure if it will be a hit because it will be difficult to follow if you have not read the book...but that shouldn't stop you from going...especially if you believe in reincarnation and soul connection.

If you are still scratching your head there is a fabulous article explaining the differences between movie and book.

    Absolutely Amazing

    by

A creative and original piece of cinema that delves deep into the human condition and exposes us to the pain we can cause each other. A combination of romance, science fiction, thriller, mystery, comedy, and action this movie goes beyond the limitations of genre. Thought provoking and insightful it brings to life a story that transcends time; weaving a web of interconnected experiences that come together into a single, beautiful masterpiece. The scenery was beautifully done and the emotions so intense you could feel them in the very fabric of your being. At first, the viewer is immersed in scene after scene that leaves him or her confused but you quickly adapt to the presentation of the plot and understanding soon follows. Definitely not a movie for children as it depicts violence and disturbing imagery but those scenes are essential. If you're looking for a mindless film don't waste the seats on yourself; but if you enjoy substance and thought then this is the film for you.

    Unique twist

    by WUebele

If you believe in reincarnation this is an interesting adult movie about concequences in life, and the choices one makes. One true message about the movie - that love never dies. For this feeble mind, trying to keep track of the many story lines can get a bit dizzying. As always the acting was good but the makeup artist deserves the full credit in this film. This story line took almost three hours to tell, so for those with weak bladders... The movie is worth seeing but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again.

    storytelling around the universe

I will buy this movie and watch it again!

not for kids, but for students and beyond.

    operatic
    fresh storytelling method
    hilarious and terrifying

...musically I would have liked to hear more electronic music incorporated, especially in the scenes from the future
