Cloud Atlas: Avoid it like Hurricane Sandy!!!!

Cloud Atlas: Talk about "Bait and Switch"! While those behind production of this movie and their adoring critics claim it's a new and daring look at life (past, present and future) with probing questions about karma and reincarnation, don't believe it for a second!!! The only question I (and most of those leaving the theater near me) wanted to know the answer to was: 'How can I ever recover those three hours out of my life?'

Virtually the entire "plot" (and using that term loosely) was nothing more than rehashed, cut and paste snippets from successful films including: Blade Runner, Star Wars, Soylent Green (and they had the gall to mention it in one of the scenes!), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Cocoon, Amazing Grace, Silkwood, The China Syndrome, Brokeback Mountain, with a bit of Braveheart thrown in the mix. To say this movie was bad, would be a complete understatement. Why can't mainstream Hollywood treat their audience with the intelligence of a drama like, "Breaking Bad?"

I loved every second of it. Beautiful cinematography, beautiful stories wonderful tight together and don't let me get started on makeup. These guys had a field trip. I need to see the movie again for so many reasons.

    AMAZING!

    by yasmani

Just want to say that this movie blew me away... incredible in every aspect.. each storyline has its own implied message and each character was beautifully played. PAY ATTENTION!! it is one of those movies that if you miss a detail you could lose track of the story.. I did find how each story connects with the previous, but its really easy to miss, very tiny details give it away..... Not for close minded people, obsessive religious nor one track minded individuals with no higher intellect than a 2 year old... Definitely not for kids as some images can be a little strong. Love how they touch some many taboo topics with so much ease... great story overall! Must see!!! Oscar winning film!!

Too deep for just one pass...

    by port8t

Wow... I thought this movie had a LOT of depth. I'm still certain there are aspects of this movie that I have, as of yet, not even begun to fathom. This movie makes for excellent discussion and I enjoyed it so much that I purchased the book and hope that I will be able to trudge through the 500+ pages therein. I will certainly be purchasing this movie for my shelf someday.

visually stunning, great story, don't watch it when you are tired

Acting was superb, visually stunning, amazing way to tell a story, but very hard on the brain.

My wife and I saw the movie together. Six stories are interwoven on the screen. We were completely lost in the first five minutes, but as the movie unfolds, you begin to sync with what is happening. At the end, you have a pretty good idea what the story is about.

I recommend seeing it, but maybe a matinee when you are fully awake.... Cloud Atlas covers a huge span of time, and keeping track of what was happening when is challenging.

    Cloud Atlas

I really liked the movie because it's bases are so true to my nature. The actors play many characters in the movie which I think is a marvelous blend of creative makeup artist and acting ability of the whole cast. In the beginning of the movie I thought the links to all the characters where in one direction only to figure out that it was opposite from what i thought. Great movie for me and anyone else who can see that we are all interlinked beings.

    Trailer Misleading

    Not a movie for Christians.
Offensive on virtually every level possible.
The plot is barely strung together with a set of loose associations.
    Truly and absolutely terrible.

    Excellent Cinematics!

    by

If you liked Inception, then you must watch this movie. It was very well made. The storyline is the only thing I did not like very much. I felt the link between all the smaller stories were very subtle. Almost like they were forced together. And the characters played by the same actors, shared no characteristics, except for who they fall in love with may be. Nevertheless, you are sure to be mesmerized by the overall movie.

    Too much time switching

I see where the author was going with the movie, but the connections are far to vague. It's hard to understand the connections between time periods. The movie is more like a play with six principal actors. At different time periods each actor plays a different role: lover, hero, villain, etc. the visuals are nice, but the plot line is a bit convoluted.

    Cloud Atlas

I felt like this was LOST on Steroids!!! There is a lot of jumping back thru timelines, which is confusing, but there is resolution at the end. The movie is nearly 3 hours, but luckily didn't feel that long! This movie deserves an Oscar for the make-up. Many of the main characters play 5-6 different characters in the various timelines. Be sure to watch the credits at the end to see who played whom, if you aren't able to guess, and you will be surprised by who played some characters! The cinematography was beautiful, so, if you are interested in this type of film, definitely see it on the 'big screen', don't wait for it to go DVD or TV.

Reminiscent, in ways, of "100 Years of Solitude"

Cloud Atlas is a little confusing at first, but stick with it and the themes will become clearer--not for those looking for a mindless romp, but a good time nonetheless!

    A thought provoking epic

The "Cloud Atlas" was one of the most epic movies I have seen in quite some time. The stories in the sextet were all very interesting and the various characters well developed and showed the actors depth playing numerous characters in each story. Tom Hanks, as usual, was excellent, as was Halle Berry. An extremely well crafted, if complicated tale of how love survives all conflict and tradgedy. I give it an A+. I see a lot of movies and I thoroughly enjoyed all 3 hours of it.

    Cloud Atlas

Having loved the book and its amazing contrasting literary styles embedded in one another, I found the film very disappointing. The cross-cutting among the stories and use of actors in multiple roles was confusing and gimmicky, and did not hold true to the book's spirit. My wife, who hadn't read the book, gave up trying to figure out what was happening. The Wachowskis and Twyker should have had the courage to film the book as it was written -- or not at all.
