A Sweeping Tale of Love, Loss and Time

    by

Cloud Atlas is not a movie for everyone. It's an epic saga scattered across epochs, steeped in science fiction and the fantastical, a fusion of time, space and alternate realities. In essence, it's a story about rebirth, about lives lived concurrently but at different time periods, a film that takes our concept of time as a linear path and reveals it as circular, as a perception of our unique human biology rather than a universal concept.

The film weaves in a number of different theories, from theology, technology, birth, death, love, control, chaos; the movie attempts to paint reality as a struggle against nihilism; against the villains of Unanymity and the marauding raiders of the Outlands. The idea that life is an end in and of itself, that ideas and paradigms are crystallization of the human expression, is central to the movie's message.

Some will find the material too esoteric to grapple with. But for those with whom the message resonates with, it's a rewarding experience.

    Man!!!!!! I LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!

    by

Saw the trailer for Cloud Atlas when we were at the theatre to see another movie, and I was the "eh... I'll see it if I see it, and if I don't, I don't. I'm sure it'll be on the on-demand soon after it leaves the theatre"... So I proceeded to watched the movie we were there to watch, we left the theatre, and I didn't give it another thought.
About 3 weeks ago my g/f was like, " I wanna see Cloud Atlas!" and of course I'm going to take her to see it! Movie time is bonding time lol.
So we get seated inside the theatre movie starts and I realized we forgot to grab popcorn and drinks...but you know what? The movie had me SOO engaged that I didn't even think twice about going to get anything! I love how it keeps you so involved from scene to scene. Be careful though because if you miss one thing, you miss the whole purpose of the movie, so handle all your business before the movie start time (i.e. potty breaks;snacks)
Definently getting the Blu-ray when it comes out.

Three hours of my life I will never get back

I'm familiar with the book, which is cool. However, this convoluted production of six confusing stories all told simultaneously with no pay off, left me with a headache. Don't bother.

Cloud Atlas is an acting tour de force force from a stellar cast

Cloud Atlas has a thought-provoking premise and plot line and is well-paced through several interlinked stories across several hundred years from the past to the future. Sounds complicated but it's not. But beyond the great storyline, the best reason to see the movie are the wonderful performances by the great cast. Each actor plays six or seven very different different characters across the interlinked stories. Great film!

    Too Much Information.

I was psyched about seeing _Cloud Atlas_, but left disappointed. Hot young directors, great cast, interesting source material. It was a slow ride, and almost three hours long. Some really good performances as most of the cast played multiple roles. Beautiful photography, top notch makeup, superb production design. The themes were racism, bias, prejudice and xenophobia. I had a problem following the six story lines. There was simply too much going on. Perhaps only two or three stories from the book should have been dramatized? I give _Cloud Atlas_ a weak GO. An ambitious project that is worth a look, despite the flaws. Reading the book first will probably be helpful.

    El stink-o

    by jazmen9

I thought it was going to be a great movie based on the fact that the cast of actors has made me happy in the past. Not so in this movie. The acting was good, but the plot was a muttled mess. Maybe it would have made more sense if I had read the book first. Spent the entire movie trying to figure out what was going on and waiting for it all to come together in a grand finale of understanding, but unfortunately that did not happen. Lots os people left during the movie and the ending was met with "Boy, was that weird" comments. Save your money or see something else.

    Beautiful

    by

I love this movie. It's beautiful and eloquent, and the plot is a web laced with delicate intricacies. Here is my disclaimer: If you didn't like The Da Vinci Code because you couldn't understand it and The Fountain was boring because 'why does he keep going back to that tree?" you probably won't enjoy this movie that much either. It was made for those who can read between the lines and sew together the pattern before it is fully clear. If you appreciate a movie that requires your full attention and challenges you to get the message, this will be a great use of your time.

Hard to follow at first but it comes together beautifully

The message is profound and meaningful. The filming very beautiful and creative. The storytelling a bit disjointed, but a brave attempt since the German book it is based on has hundreds of pages. Very original. Totally worth it. Don't lose interest if you feel lost in the first half... it all comes together and that's the whole point!

    Cloud Atlas

First, beautiful scenery and photography with very good acting by an all star cast. However.....that being said I watched for three hours believing that the plot would ultimately be divulged in such a way as to tie all of the storylines together the way a grand epic should. Unfortuantely, it was only then that I discovered the sheer genius of this film.....it has no plot and only a premise of why it was made. The rest must have been left on the cutting room floor.
Don't waste your money on this disappointment. I would say rent it, but don't waste that amount of money on it either. Wait until it shows up on a late night weekend Science Fiction channel opposite the "Two Headed Sharks eat Malibu". At least then it will be free.

    A thought provoking epic

The "Cloud Atlas" was one of the most epic movies I have seen in quite some time. The stories in the sextet were all very interesting and the various characters well developed and showed the actors depth playing numerous characters in each story. Tom Hanks, as usual, was excellent, as was Halle Berry. An extremely well crafted, if complicated tale of how love survives all conflict and tradgedy. I give it an A+. I see a lot of movies and I thoroughly enjoyed all 3 hours of it.

    Cloud Atlas

Wonderful actors and Actresses. Convoluted and disjointed storyline. Much of the dialogue was difficult to understand. When stories ( almost) came together at the end, it was a letdown.

I enjoyed it even more than I expected

To be honest, I was a little put-off by some of the comments made by critics. But wow!!! What an experience! I'm glad I went. Visually stunning to watch and engrossing - the three hours went by quickly.

    Love or Hate

    by

You'll either love or hate it. Similar feeling to The Tree of Life. I read the book first and missed a couple parts that were left out, but it would have added an extra hour. Must see, then decide for yourself.

    Tiring but beautiful

    by tomhat

Having to go through 3 hours of switching between 6 stories is kind of tiring. The directors did a great job in keeping those transitions smooth. However, you won't be pushed to the edge of your seat in this movie, but you'll enjoy it.

    must see again

Good movie. I'll admitt i was confused at 1st but as i watched i caught on to what was actually going on.thats what i noticed alot of the bad reviews were about. I'm into the past live thing. I truely believe. I thinkTom Hanks played a very good part as did Halley Barry.
Also it is a movie i need to buy on dvd when it comes out and watch it alone so i can see what i missed in the r theatre and understand fully. As I'm sure alot of ppl might feel the same.
I say go if you like this kind of thingbut go with someonethat doesnt talk during movies sou can pay attention. I never once was bored or tookmy eyes off u e screenm it was great i was totally into it.
