    not so hot

    by

3x in my life I've out b4 the end. This was almost the 4th. Ok, so Hollywood egos just HAVE to exercise their right to foist their 'talents' for higher ART on us. Not since Pacino wasted his time and money on Richard the Third in the New York Museum of Ar
t has this been a fruitless consumption of computer graphics. The literati can glow all the want about re: bring the book to the screen but to me, U have to read the tome before setting foot into theeeaahhhtah. Otherwise you can't tell the players witout a score card.
And that made up language Hanks uses?? Sounds like a cross between Miss Pitty Pat and

    An Investment of a Film

    by

Cloud Atlas is not only an investment of the three hours it takes to watch it, but the following hours you will think about it and spend trying to figure it all out and, ultimately, going back and watching it again to compare it to all the notes you made after the first viewing. Each of the various stories were interesting enough to have had their own movie, which leaves you with plenty of questions when it's all over. The film itself was very well made, as we have come to expect from those that brought us The Matrix and V for Vendetta, and the roll call was also top notch. Each actor excelled in multiple roles throughout multiple time periods and, while I do not wish to take anything away from the performances everyone put in, Jim Broadbent's modern day character was probably the most entertaining to watch. There is an unnecessary sex scene, but it is as graphic as it is useless and should not prevent teenagers from watching the movie. Prepare to spend some time researching afterward.

    Worked for Me!

    by Seaview

My perspective on Cloud Atlas, it was good, I liked it, it worked. Somehow or another, all the various story lines did weave together and come together in the end. This is a long movie, and it kept my interest throughout...I'm not sure it is for everyone, but I enjoyed it immensely.

    Thought-provoking!

Visually stunning movie with some really big names. Unfortunately my friends and I stopped trying to follow the plot lines after the first hour and just sat back and enjoyed the action for the next 2 hours. We were talking about the movie afterwards for a good hour trying to figure out how the stories were connected, the characters each actor played, which soul was which, etc (with a little help from the wiki summary of the book). Even though the movie had to leave certain parts out, I think the final piece was well worth seeing in theaters. This movie really is one of those that you have to see a number of times to fully "get" so if that's not your cup of tea, then I guess this movie will leave you scratching your head. Go see this with friends so you can enjoy discussing it afterwards!

    Enjoyable tale worth the wait

    by

Stick with this movie, it starts off a bit hard to follow, you think that they are not going to tie the multiple stories that flash back and forth, together. Don't worry if you are not getting it for the first hour of the three hour movie, it comes together easily after a bit and becomes a great, moving story with a satisfying end.

Cloud Atlas - Proof That Great Actors Have Poor Judgement At Times

Plot, What Plot? Storyline reads good on the website, sounds fresh & different. Couldn't wait to see, major let down :( 1st hour was trying to like it, 2nd hour was dreadful, 3rd hour was thinking hurry up & end. Too much profanity to be enjoyable. Choppy mutled dialogue throughout movie, story line to chaotic. Seems like the director(s) tried way to hard to create something unique and forgot that is was supposed to be entertaining as well. Went with a group of 4, ages 18-54, all members gave it a 0 star rating. The quality of the acting was lost to the poor story. A critic wrote "Even Hanks Can't Save This One!", wish we would have read that sooner, could have saved our $58.00+ for the IMax.

    Impulsivity

    by

The premise of the movie caused me, impulsively, to purchase my ticket; however, I ignored the length of the film. If you can sit through a three hour movie (e.g. Dances with Wolves) then theoretically, you should have no problem making it through this one. I felt a few scenes could have been left on the editing room floor. Be prepared to follow six storylines, and pay close attention. Per ? Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly "six stories over the course of nearly three hours, and most of them would come off as fairly conventional on their own. But when you slice them up, swirl them around, and hold them up to the light, the design of what you're seeing is hypnotic, and it wires you into the film." I was enticed by the cinematography, which led me away from the characters throughout the movie. Someone needs to define scenography vs cinematography for me. Finally, the typography and penmanship during the 1931 scenes were works of art in their own right; they made my heart sing.

    Cloud Atlas worth watching

    by apernst

I went into Cloud Atlas not knowing quite what to expect. I'd read the reviews about the history of its making, the difficulties the directors ran into during the adaptation, so was expecting to have to work a bit to follow the plot.

In the end, that was indeed true. The constant cutting between the different narrative threads took a bit more engagement than I normally expend at the movies. The message of "we are all connected through time" was also a bit hokey and heavy-handed. Some of the make-up was also distracting.

Having said that, the film is visually stunning. The action running throughout each of the story lines also kept me engaged. I'd very much recommend it.

Very strange and hard to follow

This is definitely NOT the movie to watch if you just go to the theatre mindlessly for some entertainment. You must actually try and follow this movie and think during it. If you don't, it will be the worst 2hrs and 43mins of your life. But, the cinematography was amazing.

A Grand Gesture with Mediocre Execution

    by

While I have yet to read the original novel, I still had somewhat high expectations for this film. Reviews were quite critical following its release, but I took such commentary with a grain of salt, as science-fiction films tend to invite the wrong sets of perspectives from such eyes. The movie is essentially a prolonged, under-explicated narrative revolving around the concepts of freedom, revolution, love and transcendence. The film espoused considerable value in its opening sequences, but the individual character lines seemed under-developed. Certain crucial themes were advanced only in passing, to be overshadowed by unharnessed violence and intensity. Granted, this was a rated R film, but there were certain instances where the explicit scenes did not feel justified, but were little more than "shock factor." However, I still enjoyed the overall narrative. My recommendation might be to read the novel prior to the film, so you may fill in the character plots on your own.

I don't need a map when I have an atlas of the clouds!

This movie made me cry and it actually describe what I think about death. Now saying that it wasn't a sad movie it was one that moved me emotionally! It is a very visual and stunning film. I highly recommend staying after for the credits because you will see how only a few actors played so many parts. There is a lot of gender bending going on in this film which I was thrilled with. This is the true art of making film. You don't necessarily need to read the book because even if you did you may not understand it. lastly, it won't matter when it ends you will sit there speechless I promise! Hang on for a fun visual ride about love, loss and death, travel!

    Cloud Atlas is very cloudy

This movie is very confusing and hard to follow in the beginning and thourghout the whole movie. If you can last till the end it does come together, However, most people won't bother to sit through it that long.

    Amazing

    by bricox1

This movie was amazing. The visual elements were stunning. I am going to have to go see it again so I can put all of the pieces together. Extra credit to all of the actors in this film. Many of them played multiple roles and we completely sold you on their characters.

    CLOUD ATLAS

THIS MOVIE IS A THINLY VEILED OBAMA CAMPAIGN NARRATIVE DISGUISED AS AN ADVENTURE MOVIE. THE LIBERAL SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES RUN THROUGHOUT. ONE OF THE THEMES WAS TO RAIL AGAINST 'EVIL CORPORATIONS, ESPECIALLY OIL PRODUCERS. BUT, TYPICALLY THE LEFTEST ARE SO HYPOCRITICAL, AS IN THIS MOVIE WHERE THE PRODUCERS ACCEPTED MUCH $$ FROM THE CIGARETTE INDUSTRY.

THE REASON WE VIEWED THE MOVIE WAS BECAUSE TOM HANKS STARRED. BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE AS USUAL. BUT MY LAST BUY OF TOM HANKS' WORKS.

    Cloud Atlas is unique

    by optmist

Strange movie, great acting, the make-up artists did a great job. It took a long time to figure out the movie and the spanning of the time sequences. It's still a very well made movie and worth seeing.
