    Cloud Atlas

Having loved the book and its amazing contrasting literary styles embedded in one another, I found the film very disappointing. The cross-cutting among the stories and use of actors in multiple roles was confusing and gimmicky, and did not hold true to the book's spirit. My wife, who hadn't read the book, gave up trying to figure out what was happening. The Wachowskis and Twyker should have had the courage to film the book as it was written -- or not at all.

    Excellent!

If Tom hanks does not win an Oscar for skillfully playing so many characters it will be a shame. This is certainly a movie for intelligent and enlightened people. Not for those looking for an epic special effects filled movie. This is not The Matrix.

Contrary to some critics, my wife and I felt the movie skillfully came together slowly and methodically from a chaotic beginning.

    We loved it!

    Must-see

Roger Ebert gave Cloud Atlas a glowing review and 4 stars which is especially poignant because the film got mixed reviews and the film has been dumped on critically. But I feel like he got it - the film is really ambitious, powerful, moving, and a rare paean to not only the indelible interconnectedness of humanity and human longing, but to freedom and self-determination that captures the eternally recurring moral struggle, at times violent and not for the weak-willed, necessary to secure one's own liberty and happiness and preserve it for generations to come. There is a lot take in, and may benefit from repeat viewings, but very, very worth it. Awesome.

    Too Much Information.

I was psyched about seeing _Cloud Atlas_, but left disappointed. Hot young directors, great cast, interesting source material. It was a slow ride, and almost three hours long. Some really good performances as most of the cast played multiple roles. Beautiful photography, top notch makeup, superb production design. The themes were racism, bias, prejudice and xenophobia. I had a problem following the six story lines. There was simply too much going on. Perhaps only two or three stories from the book should have been dramatized? I give _Cloud Atlas_ a weak GO. An ambitious project that is worth a look, despite the flaws. Reading the book first will probably be helpful.

    Oh No! is right

I'll cut right to it. This is basically a few short stories that are somehow connected that progress over the length of the movie. It is constantly cutting between stories and the casting was simply horrible. Acting was so-so but this mix of actors/actresses should not have worked together. I nearly followed at least 8 people that walked out during the course of the movie but I had high hopes that the connection would be more profound and deeper than reincarnation. Yes, you read correct, this is just about reincarnation and how these "spirits" or "souls" will sometimes recognize each other through time and sometimes not. It was just too random and shallow. And despite the incredible volume there was about 1/3 of the dialogue that was incomprehensible. There was no closure, no depth, no chemistry between the actors and the many roles they played. The make-up was dreadful. White people made Asian, a beautiful Asian woman turned white and a beautiful black woman turned white. Save your $$

    Cloud Atlas

This is a great movie that works on many levels - as an adventure, as sci-fantasy, as mystery/thriller. And, given all of the roles that each major star plays (and there are lots of them) you will want to see this more than once just to see if you can catch them all on the second go-round. A really enjoyable evening.

A little confused at the very beginning but very quickly really go into it. I loved the stars, the changes in the time line. Excellent acting. I would recommend this movie to everyone!!!!

Pretentious and tries far too hard

    by

Some nice cinematography and decent performances but story wise- leave it. Far better ways to spend the very long run time. Boring in long sections and poor continuity, which was part of the intention but executed poorly.

    Wha???

Even though it had great potential with great actors, CLOUD ATLAS left me cold, bewildered, and perplexed.
If it was a book I could go back and reread what I didn't understand, try to make some sense of what I just saw. I tried to keep my mind open to what unfolded before me, but it all was convoluted to me Unfortunately this movie just kept plugging on [APPROXIMATELY 3 HOURS], leaving me wondering when it would all gel and take on some meaning.
The cinematography was beautiful, Tom Hanks was his usual excellent. But that wasn't enough.
I left the theater about 30 minutes before it ended not caring what happened to any of them. My friend who joined me left an hour before that.
I'd rate it right up there with VANILLA SKY

    Amazing

    by bricox1

This movie was amazing. The visual elements were stunning. I am going to have to go see it again so I can put all of the pieces together. Extra credit to all of the actors in this film. Many of them played multiple roles and we completely sold you on their characters.

    Cloud Atlas

One of the most boring and confusing movies I have ever seen. Despite the fact that there were so many excellent actors lined up, the constant switches between the different stories made it difficult to really understand what is going on. The stories themselves were very conventional and overflowing with senseless scenes of brutality - and the morale of the whole thing seems to be that people never change - well we knew that before.
Alltogether I would not recommend the movie to my worst enemy - 3 hrs of pure boredom not worth the money you pay for admission.

    Good entertainment; excellent acting!

It would have been less entertaining but much more simple to just say "some of mankind will exist in each epoch who choose to take advantage of less aggessive members of homo sapiens." But that would have been less entertaining and not allowed the flashbacks to Matrix, Solent Green much less provide a showcase for the acting talent of the cast - wow! what acting and cross dressing! what makeup artists! If this is ever redone, make sure the curious dialect of the Valley Dwellers is clearly projected, otherwise we all wonder what the dialog may have been. True-true! Maybe a little throat cutting and blood flow is necessary for US audiences but there is a little too much for my taste. And what was the goal of the painted horsemen? They didn't seem to exercise their plunder and rapine capacity - but reminded me of reivers in Serenity.

All in all it was 2 hours and 44 minutes of good entertainment - and remember, not all people are nice!

    Great Movie.

    by orateam

It has all the elements of great film except that it just didn't answer the primary question which was how are all the points connected. Still, visually it was engaging, well acted, interesting and very entertaining. The Wachoskis are known for leaving holes in their stories, so not a big surprise. There is an unessary sex scene about 20 mins from the end of the film that will keep this from any sub 14 yr old. Not sure why they left that there. Without it, it would have easily met the PG-14 and helped them recoup the 100 million dollar budget.

    Cloud Atlas

    by Gpek727

I put "Cloud Atlas" in the same class as "The Fall" and "Avatar," which, when all is said and done, are two of my favorite movies of all time because of their uniqueness, their ground-breaking components, their superior production qualities, and --most of all--their pushing me down some new paths of wellness: cognitive, spiritual, moral, philosophical, and political. They take me to new levels and into new worlds where I have never been.

I do agree with Roger Ebert, who wrote this lead to his review: "Even as I was watching "Cloud Atlas" the first time, I knew I would need to see it again. Now that I've seen it the second time, I know I'd like to see it a third time." I know I will see at it least once more and definitely will read the book.

    Pretentious and trite

This a a great movie if you like trying to pick out actors covered in layers of prosthetic make-up. It's also a great movie if your idea of profundity is "kumbaya." Otherwise, it's three hours of your life you'll never get back.

That said, there are some good performances. However, if I never see another Tom Hanks movie after this, it will be too soon.
