    Pretentious and trite

This a a great movie if you like trying to pick out actors covered in layers of prosthetic make-up. It's also a great movie if your idea of profundity is "kumbaya." Otherwise, it's three hours of your life you'll never get back.

That said, there are some good performances. However, if I never see another Tom Hanks movie after this, it will be too soon.

    Cloud Atlas isn't for everybody

    by step69

Cloud Atlas tells six seperate seemingly unrelated stories and then tries to tie them all together at the end as one universal story of reincarnation and karma. I personally think Cloud Atlas is a mess because there is really no cohesive plot or character development to speak of. I can deal without one or the other, but not both.

Cloud Atlas jumps from timeline to timeline too quickly without letting the viewers get a feel for the characters or the storyline. After about 30 minutes in, I thought that it was really going to hard sitting through this for nearly three hours. There were some moments in this film that I thought were cringe worthy, like in the future timeline where Tom Hanks & Hallie Berry speak gibberish throughout their scenes.

So there you have it. While I think the idea of Cloud Atlas is intriguing, the actual movie is not. I definitely don't recommend Cloud Atlas.

    Cloud Atlas

Absolutely fabulous! I want to go back over and over and I never feel that way about a movie. Once is almost always enough for me. I also plan to get the book, I was so intrigued with the story.

    Wayyyyyy tooo longgggg

I have always been a fan of dramatic films. However, this was more of a romantic movie than a drama. The problem being there were so many tangenting storylines they did not focus enough to build the characters of anyone. It would have been much better if it simply focused on the 2 or 3 good storylines to build up those characters rather than jump around to different points that were poorly linked together.
All this would have been tolerable had the movie not been almost 3 hours long. They attempted to make a hugely dramatic movie that to me came off as more of a long winded romantic comedy. They attempted to make a 1 dimensional movie appear to have 6 dimensions (2 dimensions to many if you ask me).
While the movie came off as long winded, there were certain timelines that I did enjoy alot and there were some very good scenes. It would have been much more tolerable had it not been so long or if they focused. Good movie if you are in the mood for VERY long romance/drama.

    A Beautiful Film

I enjoyed Cloud Atlas very much. But it was not without its flaws. It was structured differently than the book, interlacing the stories rather than proceeding from one to the next, which I think contributes to the sense of confusion some viewers are expressing. Also, the stunt casting went a bit far. Every time a familiar face showed up in a different role, it was a bit distracting. The film is worth seeing, though, which is why my overall rating is a solid Go.

Reminiscent, in ways, of "100 Years of Solitude"

Cloud Atlas is a little confusing at first, but stick with it and the themes will become clearer--not for those looking for a mindless romp, but a good time nonetheless!

Many won't get it, like they didn't get Matrix - great movie.

    by leerae

It was a little like Matrix, never a dull moment, and you really had to pay attention. it's very deep, many people won't get it -- just like they didn't get the Matrix. One of the most thought provoking movies I've seen in a long time.

    Don't waste your time!

    by canval

Time is too precious to waste it on this movie flop. My husband and I wanted to walk out several times but kept hoping it was going to get better. Many images are disturbing and it just never flowed to tie all the story lines together. I wouldn't even recommend it as a rental. Don't waste your time.

    Must Go!

    by Alfuria

This film is the definition of perfection for each of the separate genres that it represents. The acting is well done and the cinematography is beautiful, yet does not consume anything from the story. The writing spins together six epics in heartwarming, tear wrenching, belly laughing bliss, and besides the occasional heavy accent, is a testament to what a story can truly do.

    Too Much Information.

I was psyched about seeing _Cloud Atlas_, but left disappointed. Hot young directors, great cast, interesting source material. It was a slow ride, and almost three hours long. Some really good performances as most of the cast played multiple roles. Beautiful photography, top notch makeup, superb production design. The themes were racism, bias, prejudice and xenophobia. I had a problem following the six story lines. There was simply too much going on. Perhaps only two or three stories from the book should have been dramatized? I give _Cloud Atlas_ a weak GO. An ambitious project that is worth a look, despite the flaws. Reading the book first will probably be helpful.

    Long Strange Worthwhile Trip

    by Schlaik

Big and no name actors staying in (multiple) character in six plot-lines over indeterminate centuries is worth the ticket price, with or without the Neo-Seoul special effects and different directors. The theme -- individual and collective freedom is worth fighting for even when it is periodically crushed -- may be so much banality in the critical eye of the New Yorker et al. With me it struck a true chord. Not a bad feeling to have walking out of the theater, even if one's brain is somewhat addled by all the time travel and multiple plots: your life is worth fighting for, and someone, if not you, has fought for it sometime.

Very strange and hard to follow

This is definitely NOT the movie to watch if you just go to the theatre mindlessly for some entertainment. You must actually try and follow this movie and think during it. If you don't, it will be the worst 2hrs and 43mins of your life. But, the cinematography was amazing.

    Complicated but interesting

To many stories running at the same time...specially during the first half of the movie. he feeling of being lost invade me during that half. The second half improves in this sense and introduces critics to society that are very interesting. At the end you have a mix feeling of understanding the point but loosing something...kind of waiting to see the interconnection of the multiple stories, besides the phenotype of some characters.
    I like it!!!!

    Great Movie! Epic in Scale

Six stories for the price of one! If you think you've already seen Cloud Atlas after watching the 6 minute trailer, you are mistaken. That is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. The scenery is meant to be seen on the big screen. Don't wait to see this on DVD.
