Cloud Atlas -- Destined to be a Classic; A Film About Interwined Destinies

    by MODDHA

Aloha, Your Hawaiian MODDHA Reviewer here:
This Film once again shows how this director team (Matrix, Speed Racer, Run Lola Run;) are willing to push the envelope, redefining what is possible or expected in modern film making.
Stay to watch the end credits as you see how the make-up, gender switches, and costumes acorss the films portrayal of its characters 1,000 year time line is impeccably accomplihsed. The original story and the movie itself are stunning visually, emotionaly, and place a perspective square on the minds of its audiance on your views of applied life ethics, moriality, and behavior.
That such a film could be made in 2012 is a testament to the director's and producers' tenancity and uncompromising dedication to the true art and form of film making. An amazung film that challenges your imagination, while at the same moment inspires its characters (and naturally the audience) to understand that we are Spirits in Flesh; Total ride of immersion & compelling story. GO!

    Wow!

I wish I could have the 2 hours of my life back that I wasted on this horribly confusing & chaotic movie. They tried too hard...but failed miserably.

    Unique twist

    by WUebele

If you believe in reincarnation this is an interesting adult movie about concequences in life, and the choices one makes. One true message about the movie - that love never dies. For this feeble mind, trying to keep track of the many story lines can get a bit dizzying. As always the acting was good but the makeup artist deserves the full credit in this film. This story line took almost three hours to tell, so for those with weak bladders... The movie is worth seeing but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again.

Tries to blow your mind, only blows your evening.

    by

This should be called "Hey look - I can tell the same story 8 different ways at the same time!" With plenty of opportunities for profound cause-and-effect between multiple realities, Cloud Atlas instead opts for subtle correlations, some of which you have to try pretty hard to notice. As impressive as it is that the main actors each play several characters, the acting as a whole fails to meet expectations. I'm a big Tom Hanks fan, but this is a rare miss.

    Cloud Atlas worth watching

    by apernst

I went into Cloud Atlas not knowing quite what to expect. I'd read the reviews about the history of its making, the difficulties the directors ran into during the adaptation, so was expecting to have to work a bit to follow the plot.

In the end, that was indeed true. The constant cutting between the different narrative threads took a bit more engagement than I normally expend at the movies. The message of "we are all connected through time" was also a bit hokey and heavy-handed. Some of the make-up was also distracting.

Having said that, the film is visually stunning. The action running throughout each of the story lines also kept me engaged. I'd very much recommend it.

    A break from the norm...

I guess the best part about the whole movie was the experience of feeling of being transported to other times and dimensions and not knowing what to expect next or how this journey will come together. There were some areas that were a far reach and I became a little lost in sequences but somehow I found that to be refreshing in a time when movies have become a bunch of remakes or have thin plots. Not sure if this would win an Oscar but I was at least entertained with the acting and cinematography in a way that many movies fail. In short, I'd say Go, if no other reason than getting a break from the norm.

    Achieves it's Goal

    by Evansrw

Cloud Atlas is an extremely ambitious film that, although flawed, still achieves it's goal. The film follows multiple story lines throughout time, thus showing us the repercussions of our actions, and how they affect others, history in general, and our soul's journey (either forward or backward). What I really appreciated is that a multi layered story like this could easily be lost in a sea of abstractions, but the filmmakers help the audience along (mainly using the same actors to follow souls throughout time) so that the message is clear. However, I did not feel spoon fed either; the film leaves you with lots of questions and thoughts that leave you wondering hours afterwards. My only complaints are that some of the sequences are simply hard to believe (new dialects that reminded me of Jar Jar binks). However, overall I was extremely pleased to go a film that was actually thought provoking (a rarity these days).

Cloud Atlas: Avoid it like Hurricane Sandy!!!!

Cloud Atlas: Talk about "Bait and Switch"! While those behind production of this movie and their adoring critics claim it's a new and daring look at life (past, present and future) with probing questions about karma and reincarnation, don't believe it for a second!!! The only question I (and most of those leaving the theater near me) wanted to know the answer to was: 'How can I ever recover those three hours out of my life?'

Virtually the entire "plot" (and using that term loosely) was nothing more than rehashed, cut and paste snippets from successful films including: Blade Runner, Star Wars, Soylent Green (and they had the gall to mention it in one of the scenes!), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Cocoon, Amazing Grace, Silkwood, The China Syndrome, Brokeback Mountain, with a bit of Braveheart thrown in the mix. To say this movie was bad, would be a complete understatement. Why can't mainstream Hollywood treat their audience with the intelligence of a drama like, "Breaking Bad?"

    Great movie...

You have to pay close attention to what is going on... in the beginning, the rapid change between the characters was a little confusing, but all in all, great pic...

I need to see it several more times.

Other than the "fact" that this is based on a novel (which I have yet to read, and now I really do want to read it) it feels more like someone had an incomplete plot for three or four films, but no beginning and no end. Then, because most popular writers tend to write in the same vein, or with similar structures, someone noticed that some of the characters were relatable to each other, from one story to the next, it was decided to make a single film, linking the story lines together. They built a wrap around, and then stitched it all together to make a loosely palatable story. This is what it "feels" like, but I need to see it several more times, seriously. Also, the first couple of times viewing it is very difficult to not play the game entitled: "Guess who is playing THIS character" which is fun, but distracting from a complex and wonderfully woven story.

Irritating 1 to 2 minutes scenes running over 4 story lines throughout long movie

Forget trying to follow this story, the 2nd worst showing style behind the bouncy cam. Each scene lasts 2 minutes or less, some are 10sec, rotating through multiple stories. This goes on through the entire long movie. Id be happy with 5 minute scenes. This style is irritating and annoying the longer it lasts. Trying to follow this story line, not likely, they don't truly get connected in the end. One of the stories includes a lepracaun like subconscious that doesn't do anything to the story, why didn't the other stories have a subconsciuos.
The positives - the scenes and sets are super quality, was great for Imax.

    Tiring but beautiful

    by tomhat

Having to go through 3 hours of switching between 6 stories is kind of tiring. The directors did a great job in keeping those transitions smooth. However, you won't be pushed to the edge of your seat in this movie, but you'll enjoy it.
