The Sessions
I saw this with my SO last night and felt that the time was well-spent.
The subject matter is one that, in this most puritanical of societies, would not usually see the light of day. Since most Americans go into shock if confronted with the sight of the female nipple, the idea that a mature woman, Helen Hunt, would spend a good deal of screen time totally naked would have most Republicans running for the exits or calling 911. I felt that the movie, which has the pacing and dialogue of a stage play, treated the sex and sexuality in an adult manner, but kept it from being snarky,or juvenile. The subject is SEX, and the shedding of virginity for a man who most people would assume would not be interested in it, let alone participate. John Hawkes does a yeoman job of giving life and warmth to a character who has no mobility whatsoever. Every nuance of voice and eye movement fleshes out this character and makes us feel his pain. Helen Hunt and William H Macy support him ably.
