    Good movie

At first I thought this movie was going to be too dark and depressing for me. However, as this movie went on it got better and better. A lot of good twists I didn't see coming. Very entertaining. I give it 8.5 out of 10.

    Slow start, strong finish

Fascinating story. Excellent acting. A movie with multiple twists and turns that is worth seeing. The beginning is a relatively long set up of one of the main characters, it takes some time to develop but once you begin to understand the depth of the story the pieces start to come together. Main characters are well acted by Rooney Mara and Jude Law. Not for children!

    A truly intelligent movie!

    by drcycle

Rich in complex layers, twists and turns that require your full attention, which is a pleasure to do. Many issues are accurately revealed: depression, loyalty, pharmaceutical sales reps, consultant fees, greed, avarice, sociopaths, blind sexual love, self-preservation, and ultimate redemption. The nuances of this film cannot be fully anticipated. Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones are all excellent! A standout?an intelligent movie that challenge your innate thoughts and emotions. The only weakness was the wife of Jude Law. She portrayed a wife that would easily dump her supposed love. A woman that cares only for herself and lacking loyalty to her man. Do such people exists, of course. But why would Law come back? Very minor complaint, overall a fabulous experience!

    Side Effects

Walked out during movie. Dark, slow, depressing! This movie is based around a girl taking the current anti-depression drugs and the side effects. If you want to listen to someone's problems with depression -- then this movie is for you. The anti-depression drugs, Zoloft, all the SSRI's mentioned, a lot of people take today. These drugs say "may cause suicidal thoughts, dry mouth, nausea, etc......". Do not send a child to this movie if they are taking any SSRI meds or even ADHD meds.

I do not recommend this movie.

    OMG!

I love Jude Law but needless to say, I was shocked how slow this movie progressed.....it was so slow I ended up falling asleep in the first 40min-- in the theater.....BUT I can say, the last 35-40 min I saw was great... they threw in a good twist that kept me awake but I could have waited for the DVD!

    Eye opening and suspenseful

Rooney Mara delivers a superb and believable performance. Jude Law is casted perfectly for this role. The movie itself has a slow start with some foreshadowing of whats to come at the climax of the movie. You cannot watch this movie at the midnight showing because you will fall asleep. The pace is very slow even when the movie reaches the turning point it still unfolds slowly. with plenty of medical jargon thrown your way it's hard to keep up if uninterested in this topic. Side effects delivers a nice turning point with a twist few see coming thanks too Rooney Mara performance if you keep up it turns into a satisfying movie.

    A Near Miss

The professional critics who likened this to Hitchcock's psychological thrillers were obviously on crack. It has a great cast, and the story is good, but the movie suffers from a general lack of tension. I figured out quite early what was really going on, and from there on, and ... ho, hum. There was no sense of menace or danger or even empathy as Jude Law slipped into obsession and watched his life escaping from him.

This movie had great potential and could have been so much more than it was.

A great "what's going on?" movie

Very rarely are there movies where the audience is wondering what's going on. This movie has plenty of twists. All these twists also expose the relationship between the doctors and pharmaceutical companies. Thought provoking and exciting.

    Good plot and story line

If you can put the plausibility factor setting at mid point you will probably enjoy this yarn with Jude Law carrying the weight of this story. There are several gaps in the storyline that stretch things thin. A few surprises do ensue and you are caught by some that are credible but thinly so..

    On a scale of 1 - 10 with 10 being out of this world I'd give it a 6.4.

    So - So

Was not thrilled with this movie. It had been hyped as "Hitchcockian" - far from it in my opinion.
Sir Alfred Hitchcock would roll over in his grave to have his name/style associated with this film. There were perhaps 2 saving graces in this movie: its length - 105 minutes - thank God it was not one minute longer; and Jude Law. I could certainly have done without the scene towards the end that added nothing to the movie except nausea.... I give it 2 thumbs down.

    Disjointed and Confusing

Away from the obvious talent of Rooney Mara, and Jude Law,
CZJ was miscast , as was Judes wife. When non-fiction mirrors
fiction, we still need some degree of type casting , and they missed the mark with these 2 roles. What was confusing ,was Jude Laws method and ultimate diagnosis of the "scam"...the foundation let one to wonder more than necessary, and it moved to conclusions and scenes that portrayed and confirmed his assumptions without the comfort of being our own investigators.

    Smart, Suspenseful, Thoroughly Entertaining.

This film builds slowly, at first leading the audience to question its point, in addition to its plot. Turns out, that is the point, precisely. Skillfully, methodically, the writer steadily brings focus to what becomes one of the smartest plays on screen for some time. While this movie may not appeal to those with short attention spans or ones who must have constant stimulation, the rest should be pleasantly entertained. Adults only of course. This screenplay is absolutely masterful and well worth experiencing. Both Zeta-Jones and Mara execute their roles with precision and near perfection. Jude Law provides a balanced believability to this plot as well. The one deficit, if it can be called that, is that Tatum wasn?t given enough with which to work. However, with each new film he grows as an actor. It seems at long last he learning his chops. At the current rate, his will be a commanding presence on the screen during middle age. See this film. You won?t be disappointed.

    Side Effects

It was a very powerful and serious movie. Everyone should see it, except for children under the age of 13, in my opinion. There were surprises in the movie which kept me interested.

Couldn't figure out who the good guys were!

    We liked it.
Characters developed in a way that kept us wondering well into the film before revealing the twist.
The only thing that would have made the evening more enjoyable would be if 'Die Hard' wasn't playing (loudly) in the next theater.

    Fantastic!

Plot twists I never saw coming! Very unlike the predictability of most Hollywood movies. So well done and riveting! Very intriguing story line. I can't recommend it enough.
