    waste of a movie

    by

At first I was pleased...the casting seemed perfectly done in this movie. But as it wore on, it became clear that they so severely butchered the story line from the book to the point of making the plot weak and pointless and really not worth sitting through. Its such a shame as I really was excited to see this movie. I'm sure it was a budget issue, but this book coming to life provided so many exciting possibilities of using special effects to really bring the story to life and the result was just lackluster. Disappointed fan here.

    Better Than Expected

I get why people don't like it, because it missed out on lots of vital things from the book... But to be honest, I didn't like book and I really enjoyed the movie. It was funny, but dramatic and all around not at all as ridiculous as I thought it was going to be. Great movie, and good way to portray witches in a new way that appeals to teens. I'm not a fan of romance anything and I will probably end up going to go see it again. I suggest you go see it in the theaters for the full experience while you still can.

The movie is NOT the book!

I read all the negative reviews on this movie and it just rehashes the age old question regarding movies based on books. How close should a movie be to its book that it's based on? We came across this question with Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and now Beautiful Creatures. Movies are the interpretation of words on pages. It seems when the movie changes the book in any way, fans of the book feel cheated somehow. I'm reading BC now and I'm telling you, if they made a movie EXACTLY like the book, it would have to be 4 hours long. I saw the movie before I started reading it and, yes, there are differences in characters and motivations of some characters. Changes are needed for a different media.
The movie keeps not only the dark mystical tone of the book, but also its humor. It's almost as if the movie KNOWS it's high camp. Unlike a certain teen/vampire romance. You'll have fun at this movie. That's what movies are all about. If you feel the book is better then go back and READ THE BOOK!

    Give it Credit

Though this was not a perfect adaptation (no book-to-movie ever is. See Hunger Games, Percy Jackson, Twilight, Eragon, etc, the story this film presented is still beautiful. Yes, parts were mangled, and yes, it isn't perfect, but I still enjoyed the film for what it presented. It brought Ethan and Lena to light (Alden did a fantastic job and Alice was wonderful as well) but we will always have our own version of the characters in our heads. That's just how these things work. And yes, I am upset about the Amma/Marian controversy, but it was worth watching and falling in love with the story all over again. (Okay, maybe it was just Alden's performance as Ethan that has me onboard :D) Take the film for what it presents, write down the mistakes, and let the film execs know what to fix for the next one (please let there be another one)

I was an extra in this movie.

    by

So, I am in extra in this movie. After I played my part in this movie, I bought the series and read all 4 books. Last night, I saw the movie and I did like it. But... I will say that it is completely different from the book itself. I am not sure how they will have a sequel because it is impossible with the lack of characters in the movie that play a big role in the next books. The movie was very humorous.. such humorous that it reminded me of a parody. Personally, it was a little insulting the fact that the director felt he had to change so much, but the writers seemed to like the movie so I am content with the movie. Anyways, good movie.. funny. Loved the chemistry between the actors/actresses.

If you have not read this book, you will find the movie to be hilarious, cute, and touching.

If you have read the book, you will either hate it or love it.

    I have about had it!

    by

Alright, so people who have read the book (like myself I might add) are losing their minds! First off, its a 568 page book, so due to time restraints and what not, they cannot get every detail into the film. People need to enjoy the film for the film and stop comparing it to the books! Yes, while it is a book to movie adaptation and the book is exceptional, the movie is also VERY GOOD! The script was amazing, the way that they mixed hilarious elements with those sweet heart felt moments was just great! So shame on all the people who read the book and are now ripping apart the movie, I feel bad that you couldn't enjoy that movie as much as I did!

    horrible, a waste of money

    by MzAri

this movie was NOTHING like the book. Things were changed that didn't need to be changed. I left the movies before the movie was finished because I was so disgusted. Simple details were wrong. For example, if Lena lived all over, why does she have an accent like shes from Gatlin? Also, how could the directors delete a character as important as Marian. This could have been a movie series like Harry Potter or Twilight, but the fans of the books will not support this crap. Plus, so many details were changed, it wouldn't support a sequel. The directors weren't true to the book series at all. I was very disappointed.

    Meh

This was not too bad of a movie for people who have NOT read the book. For those who have, speaking for myself, I felt it could have been much better. It was as if the director's skimmed the book and transposed the 'gist' of it into a movie. I think they also had a low budget to work with which is why one of the main characters in the book (Marian) was not present and Amma filled two roles.

    It's OK

I've never read the book so I'll take the word of my wife and daughter when they say the movie did not follow the book very well and made a number of unfortunate changes to the story.

For me personally, I left feeling I had just paid matinee prices for a made for TV movie.

The leading man, while having a nice smile, is too old for the part. Speaking of nice smile, it is used at every turn whether called for or not.

The leading lady at times turns in a performance that is rather disappointing to the point that her own cardboard cutout could have stood in for her.

The best acting comes from a somewhat over the top Emma Thompson and a seductive Emmy Rossum, both of whom sadly only shows just how bad the main characters were.

Jeremy Irons did what he does best, be Jeremy Irons with a different accent.

Sadly, I should have waited and seen this one on DVD instead.

Thankfully the family time involved made it worth it, even if the movie itself didn't,

Stick to the book not the re-written script

This was all over the place, I have read all four of the books, and you cant leave out major characters. The acting was not that great, the movie jumped all over the place, I feel bad for people who havent read the books, I am sure they were totally lost. Do not waste your money and I will not see any of the follow ups if they are made.

    Very Interesting

It was what I expected. It was good movie. Kinda needed a bit more action but overall it was good. I would love the next book made into a movie too.

    really loved it.

    by

This film was very Twilight/Hunger Game/Harry Potter-esque. It's the new novel to film franchise that could blow up just like the previous mentioned. However the story is told from the male's point of view and it's kind of refreshing to see things switched up. There's still the mystical element, witchcraft but the way its done kind of cheesy but nothing we've seen before. I also really enjoy the Southern element, the film takes place in a fictional South Carolina town, filled with overly religious townspeople. Typical love story, some clever comedy and very intriguing use of word play. Overall, see it, I really enjoyed it and I hope they can make the sequels, I'd love to see another franchise pop up.

    Entertaining supernatural romance

    by jhs39

This is a little draggy at times but generally the supernatural themed romance is surprisingly funny and entertaining. The leads who play the young lovers are both very likable and Emma Thompson is clearly having a ball playing main baddie Celestine. There isn't likely to be a sequel since this tanked over the weekend so I guess I'm going to have to read the books. This is definitely a big step up from the Twilight films quality wise. Too bad audiences didn't show up.

    A Pretty Good Movie

    by

First off, No, I have not read the book. But, take that with a grain of salt. No movie is ever going to be like book. You can't have successful adaptations from a book to a movie because the movie would be too long.

At first, the movie took a little bit to take off, but once it did take off, I wanted to stay in my seat and not miss a thing. As today's science fiction movies go, it wasn't up there with Twilight and Harry Potter, but it did rate in my mind as movie go to. As for a movie that I'd watch more than once- ehhh. Maybe not. But, I certainly don't feel like I wasted my money either.

So, go check out Beautiful Creatures and judge for yourself.

    VERY DIFFERENT from the book!

I didn't like the choices of actors for the characters of the book. I really didn't like that they "merged" characters - the housekeeper and the librarian! Ethan's elderly aunts, the dog Bo Radley, and Ethan's father were never seen. That doesn't even cover so many changes that the screenplay made in the story. I'd really like my money back on this one.
