RUSSELL CROWE PLAYS A TAINTED NEW YORK CITY MAYOR IN THIS EXTREMELY AVERAGE FILM.

Russell Crowe, sporting the banged ?Nero? look, plays the slimy, mendacious, feckless Mayor of New York City, running for re-election; it will take years to erase Crowe?s insipid performance in ?Les Miserables? ; gone is the grit of ?John Nash? in ?A Beautiful Mind?, poignancy of ?James Braddock? in ?Cinderella Man? or the mettle, dignity of ?The Gladiator?. Disguising his Australian accent with a tainted, New Jersey dialect, he squeezes the maximum sleaziness out of his untoward character...
The Mayor matches wits with the police commissioner; Jeffrey Wright gives a scintillating performance; the screen simmers with his presence; unfortunately their moments together are too infrequent...

    TWO & 1/2 STARS!!

    Entertaining, but not outstanding

Definitely a movie you'll only see once. It's entertaining while you're watching it, but then once you have time to digest it becomes a bit of a let down. The movie is set up well to be complex until the end when it falls flat. Then you realize all the build up didn't actually provide any value to the overall story. Would have also like more Mark Wahlberg fighting scenes, more Zeta-Jones, and more Kyle Chandler. Crowe and Wahlberg performances were fine.

    Broken City

I like the movie very much. A very entertaining movie and the cast could not be better. My wife and I are planning to see the picture again.

    Broken City

An old fashioned "noirish" thriller that has a few weak spots but is a really solid movie that contains some fine acting, especially by Mark Wahlberg, and absolutely wonderful cinematography. The lighting, the film's design, and the excellent overhead shots make the city a prime character in this movie. The pacing is excellent.

There are 3-4 scenes that are, by themselves, worth the price of admission. This isn't the kind of movie that wins awards, or will be lauded by critics looking for deeper intellectual content, but it is the kind that will be enjoyed by the audience. The night we went the audience applauded at the end and it was obvious they thought they had been entertained.

It won't be your favorite movie of the year, but you'll remember it fondly, and you won't think you wasted your evening watching it. Go.

This movie is Gritty and has an edge to it.

This movie builds it story and leaves you both happy and conflicted. It's still entertaining and keeps you focused on whats going on. I would recommend it to adults who like crime dramas.

Twists & Turns were fun. Should have been half as long.

Plot was a good idea, but the movie moved so slow that it lost my interest trying to follow the developments. Not a movie to watch if you are tired - unless you want to go to sleep.

    BROKEN CITY

    by

Was good action, easy to follow, middle was slow, but some parts seems contrived at the end, but good conquered evil even with consequences to those who committed crimes, so had a positive message.

Not as good as I had hoped

The movie stared off way too slow and at times a bit confusing. It took an hour for some real action to kick in, but even after that it fizzled. Not worth my time, for I found myself thinking that I could have been watching something else at the theater.

    Broken City

With the sway of humorous funny comments from former police detective turned private investigator vs the current Mayor of New York City. Sometimes during the film corners turn like rippled pages already seen in previous films of the age. However the outcome is yet unexpected as with a Broken City comes Broken People. I would recommend it either on DVD or in Theaters to enjoy how this Broken City is put back together.

3 Star rating out of 4

It was a girl's night out with my 2 friends. We enjoyed the dinner and drinks more than this movie at our local threater. This movie was slightly difficult to follow at times, because I could not remember all the character's names. I was surprised by the plot only in a couple of places (which I liked), and thought that the ending was going to be different for a short time. I would seriously wait until it comes out as a DVD. It is not for children, because of the partial nude sex scene. The acting was good, but the screenplay writing was hard to follow. I wonder what parts of the original movie they edited? I would rent it again for my husband and I to watch at home. We should have seen the Silver Lining...oh well, it was only $14.50 in this dinner theater! The seats were very comfortable and who could complain when you are with friends and drinking a glass of wine!

Don't Waste Your Money - It doesn't even rate a DVD Rental

    by

Broken City Sucks! - Well so much for the review. In all honesty the trailers give you the impression this is a high energy, action film with a lot of high profile conspiracy intertwined. The truth - NOPE, you'll find none of that. Gosh, where to begin. The direction is atrocious. Allen Hughes is a ridiculous director. The story was so choppy and hard to understand I found myself asking repeatedly; "What's going on?" One of the lead characters in the film named "Todd" isn't even seen until 3/4's of the way through and I've seen more action in a daycare at nap time than this movie. I won't bore you any further...don't waste your money, go see Arnold this week if you want to see an action movie :)

    Terrible Language

    by fandfg

The 'F' word was probably used more than any other single word in Broken City; it was way over the top. I don't know any person in real life who uses as many filthy words and often as the people in this movie. It distracted from the movie big time for me!

Wahlberg said this in an interview with Piers Morgan: ?If I don?t go to mass necessarily every day…I definitely go to church every day,? he said. ?That?s how I start my day. I like to get in there for about 15 or 20 minutes ? say my prayers.?

Really? Does he not know the church's view of foul language? I think he needs to open a Bible while he's in church and read what it says.

Don't waste your time or money on this, I wish I hadn't.

    Terrific!

Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe were terrific in this flick! If you want a movie which will keep you guessing for the whole 2 hours, it is this one. You will need to pay close attention to what is going on, or you will be lost. There will be people stabbing one another in the back, and it us up to the characters to find out who is honest or not. Great movie! Good thriller!

    Fair film fare

I went in slightly skeptical after reading mixed reviews, but felt that Wahlberg and Crowe's acting skills could make it palatable. The did! The story is surprisingly complex (and overly so at times), but the actors do pull it off and make it entertaining. Catherine zzeta Jones adds star power, however thats shout it for her character. The quality level of films falls considerably at this time of year, so you have to take that into account also, since this year's nominees are especially competitive. Worth seeing, however.
