    A Charming Slice of History

    by

A quiet little film that was sadly ignored (in spite of a campaign to get Murray an Oscar nod), as I felt Bill Murray gave a wonderful performance here as FDR, and Laura Linney as well as his distant cousin Daisy, with whom he had an affair, it seems. I very much enjoyed the interplay of all these different characters (FDR, Daisy, Eleanor, FDR's mother, and the king & queen of England) - the dynamics were fascinating. I understood the story was based on diaries found after the cousin passed away, so this is truly an insider view. I tend to feel that quiet, charming films like this one tend to be overlooked, which is a shame. I do recommend this film if you love history and appreciate a good performance.

    Excellent, good performances, well directed

I am glad I ignored the critics reviews and went to see this thoroughly enjoyable, well acted, beautifully directed film.
The subtle understated performances, particularly by Laura Linny and Bill Murray capture the time in which their characters lived. It is refreshing to see this period in our history captured and recreated in a way that highlights the sharp contrast to today's world of "in your face" verbal expression and media over saturation.
The drawing room scene between The President and the King of England in which they both conceed some of their insecurities was terrific.
Also all the women's roles in the movie were wonderful and provided insights into their life and personalities.
    Very satisfying and entertaining movie.

    Didn't care for it....

They should make it clear that the movie theme is FDR's affair....the advertising indicates it's more about him...and, I never got past seeing Bill Murray...never got to seeing FDR...LINCOLN was a far better movie.....

    Behind the Scenes

Although this movie is not epic like Lincoln or The Hobbit, it is an interesting look behind the scenes from a time when the media was complicate to the dalliances of our government. I thought that the movie had a reasonable pace for a character piece. I am sure that it would be painful for someone looking for an action movie. I also thought Bill Murray did pretty well in a serious role, which admittedly surprised me.

Light in terms of content - could have been much richer to grasp the more complete character of FDR

    by TripleV

I was somewhat disappointed in the shallowness of this movie. Perhaps it is because the movie I saw last week was Les Miserables - best movie I believe I have ever seen in my life; so contrast effect was huge. If you just want to go to a movie and not have to think too much and not cry -- this may be decent relief from a stressful week. However, I'm afraid I can't recommend it as a "good movie". FDR's character was SO much more complex and interesting . . . My feeling is that by focusing on his womanizing side only -- way too much was left unaddressed . . and it would be so much more true and interesting if that part were shown in the context of who ALL he was.

My rating of so-so is generous. I guess the way I really feel about it is No - not really.

    Can wait for cable.

Don't go to see this movie if you are looking for the Roosevelt in the White House, or the "fear" speech, or WWII drama. This movie is a simple love story between the President and a girl who thought she was his only mistress. However, the best scenes are the interaction between FDR and King George of England. The scenery is great and the period music is terrific and it brings back nostalgia from a time gone by but it is also one of those movies that you can wait to see when it comes on cable TV.

    Fine acting believable story

The acting in Hyde Park was great from everyone but from Mr. West who played the king it was wonderful. The story was believable but was a litttle sad. The only thing lacking was more character development but nothings perfect. Overall we were glad we went to see it.

    Hyde Park on Hudson

In spite of the great actors, there was no character development.
I adore Bill Murray but he just doesn't make it as FDR.
The movie started and ended at no where.
Save your money and find another movie that gets somewhere!!

    Bill Murray is spectacular!

    by pedsarq

This movie is about FDR the man primarily -- his vices for alcohol and cigarrettes, but especially for extra-marital affairs. Hyde Park on Hudson is the geographical location of his mother's house, where he lived smothered while not in DC or travelling to fulfill his presidential duties. The movie takes places around the historical weekend when King George and Queen Elizabeth visited to court America into joining the war against Nazi Germany. They don't discuss much politics, but rather get to know each other and realize that they share much. This is a drama, for the most part, and depends heavily on dialogue. There are scenes where the movie drags with pointless conversation. However, the actors are first-rate and even the mundane discussions about cocktails and hot dogs provide ample entertainment. You should see this film if you're interested in the history of the period and want to see a terrific reenactment of what that weekend was like.

ANOTHER EXPOSE ON THE ADULTROUS LOVE LIFE OF A DEAD PRESIDENT: FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT.

Power is an aphrodisiac; since Early Dynastic Egypt, Mesopotamia, through the centuries, until the present, those with the might have the right to the delights of those whose lights shine at a diminished wattage, and those dim bulbs, like magnets, lust after the powerful, mighty, as sycophants to kings, presidents, dictators...

"Hyde Park on Hudson" is a quasi-documentary based on letters written to "Daisy Suckley" (demure performance by Laura Linney) revolving around her intimate relationship with her fifth cousin, "President Franklin Delano Roosevelt" (1882-1945), depicted honestly by Bill Murray; Roosevelt had a real affinity for his cousins, "Eleanor" (Olivia Williams) his wife, also fell into the "kissing cousin" category...

    TWO & 1/2 STARS!!

The FDR we did not know

    by wizinit

Bill Murray is stellar as the FDR that is not revealed in old news reels. And Samuel West puts in an Oscar worthy supporting performance as the same king we met in The King's Speech. For those who only know Laura Linney from her Masterpiece/Downton Abbey hostess role, she shows her acting skills as the simple cousin who lifted FDR's spirits in a household dominated by his mother and wife.

A piece of history not yet known.

Movingly and steadily paced acting and filming. Wonderful telling of an unknown story. All presidents seem to have secrets equal to others people, but well represented in an historical context.

    Only if you're FDR curious!

Recently visited Hyde Park, so I wanted to see how much was used in the film.....turned out to be mostly exterior scenes . Also curious about Bill Murray, but disappointed. He didn't pull off FDR for me, though his movements as a polio victim were done exceptionally well.
The story of that important weekend at Hyde Park, however, was fascinating and delightful.

fearless_autumn I do not recommend the movie Hyde Park on Hudson. It had its good bits and the acting was quite good, but it was overall a waste of my time.
