    What a Delightful Movie

What a surprise....reviews were lukewarm but what a delightful, very interesting and educational movie. The actors are first class. Go see it!

    High Expectations ...

'Hyde Park on Hudson' captures an interesting moment and shines a light on the lives of important figures in American history. I came to the movie with high expectations which were partially met. The movie is good - not great. Bill Murray is good - not great. Again, my expectations were perhaps unrealistic. Overall, the pacing of the movie is a tad slow. But the revelations about FDR's private life, his sexual liaisons, and his disability plus the tacit blindness or 'gentlemen's agreement' of those around him (not least of all the press) made for an intriguing story line that held my interest throughout.

    An okay movie..

I'd say it was just okay. The actors did a fine job, it was just a little slow in parts. The King and Queen had some very funny lines though.

    Pass on this one

Maybe my viewing was colored by having just visited FDR's house in Hyde Park the weekend before, but this is a really muddled film. It's not bad, just confused. It doesn't seem to know what it is. Maybe Richard Nelson should have written it as a play (seems like maybe he originally did) but it's fine in some places, laughable in others, and dull in many. Bill Murray and Laura Linney, as always, are great, but what they have to work with is so thin and surface-level, it's kind of hard to watch sometimes.

Skip the movie - visit the real Hyde Park instead. Now THAT is honestly fantastic.

    Didn't care for it....

They should make it clear that the movie theme is FDR's affair....the advertising indicates it's more about him...and, I never got past seeing Bill Murray...never got to seeing FDR...LINCOLN was a far better movie.....

Bill Murry is flawless as FDR

    by bartab

This movie examines the complex relationship between FDR (Bill Murry) and Daisy (Laura Linney). Both are excellent in their roles. This is not a fast paced movie. It is about a relationship that was accepted by the President?s wife and his mother .She (Eleanor) did live in a cottage a few miles away. It was a time when the Queen and King of England came to Hyde Park to enlist the Presidents support in the oncoming war.
It was also a time when FDR could drive to the local town without Police escort. As we learned from the movie it was not his only affair.
Some might find this dull. History buffs might enjoy it.
    Enjoy!

i never thought my opinion would be closer to rex reed's than a.o.scott's, but with excellent acting, humor throughout ,the look of history, and mostly good camerawork -- definitely good enough.

    Nice little movie, Missed Opportunity

    by

There were two very compelling stories elbowing each other for screen time,
I would love to have seen either better told - the visit of the King and Queen of England on the eve of WWII and the romantic side of a great man... unfortunately both stories were not very well developed. The film was well cast and acted, especially by Bill Murray, but the script didn't give him much to work with. It would have made a fair episode of Masterpiece Theater on PBS. I would recommend it as a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours but, on the whole, was a little disappointed in missing the film it could have been or the film I hoped to see.

    A little slow

The movie was not what I expected. I guess from the previews I thought the movie was going to be more about The President and the King,
I guess my interpatation was incorrect.
It seemed to be a slow pasted movie. I think the movie was worth seeing, Bill Murray did a wonderful job.

    Well done

Enjoyable, well acted movie. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nicely directed, well written....thoughtful movie that should appeal to most adults. Bill Murray and the entire cast made this bit of "history" come to life.

    BORING !!

Although I am younger (by at least 30 years) than the majority of people who were in the theater , and probably have some personal memory of FDR, I was interested in seeing this movie having seen Lincoln and was so amazed by how much history I didn't know. The movie was slow and dragged from the onset. I felt the there was no discernible plot; was it the visit from the Royals, infidelity, FDR's physical disability and its effect on his presidency?
I was impressed by Bill Murray's ability to play a character other than comedic, however this movie is not one I'd recommend to others.

    Hyde Park on Hudson

This is a lovely film, with fine performances all around. Some people will not like it since it portrays FDR as a flawed but sympathetic man. He was a lonely man who needed companionship from women that was not provided by his alienated wife Eleanor. This is a small snapshot of him at a crucial time, before war broke out in Europe. The portraits of the young King and Queen of England are charming. This is really aimed at an older generation of viewers. Most young people, especially those craving action and excitement, will find it boring. We enjoyed it very much.

    Better than the critics say

This is an interesting, thoughtful movie that is much better than the so-called critics say. It portrays accurately and interestingly a period of American history that played a vital role in America's emergence as a world player. Set in the pre-WWII period, the movie shows FDR in his upstate NY house during a summer when the English king and queen come to solicit American support in the upcoming war. The movie is seen from the perspective of Daisy, a distant cousin of FDR who becomes his mistress over the course of the movie. While it's hard to picture Ghostbuster Bill Murray as FDR, his performance is interesting and he does a spot-on characterization of the polio-effected physical limitations of FDR. I strongly recommend this movie to anyone under 40 as it will teach them a lot about the America of their grandparents' generation.

    Hyde Park on Hudson

    by analyst

While I am an FDR fan, the events in the film were largely new to me and, therefore, especially interesting.I thought the major characters: FDR, Eleanor, Mother, King George V! were very much as I remembered or imagined them (e.g.FDR's mother. I thought Bill Murray did a sensational job, as did virtually all of the others.
Also, the outside scenery was spectacular (even though apparently it was filmed in England, not Duchess County, NY). While I have been to FDR's home in Hyde Park, I don't think it was used in the film. Nevertheless, it seemed very similar.
All in all, anyone who is interested in first half of the 20th century American history should be delighted with this film.

    Hyde Park on Hudson

I thought the movie was interesting and entertaining. Found out a couple of interesting facts. Thought the characters played their parts very well. Scenery was beautiful. A friend said their local news showed film being filmed in Roosevelt's house in Hyde Park. It had some funny scenes. Really enjoyed the king and queen of England and Roosevelt.

fearless_autumn I do not recommend the movie Hyde Park on Hudson. It had its good bits and the acting was quite good, but it was overall a waste of my time.
