    Hyde Park Hid Picture Sharpness

For the serious student of American history, Hyde Park would be of interest.

For most movie goers, the image sharpness has much to be desired. Watching this flick is not any clearer than watching a home movie that was filmed with fog on the camera lense, even on the outdoor scens.

The clarity of the inside scenes are mediocre at best .

The acting was not much better than the picture quality. Nothing special.
Not recommended for anyone suffering from depression; they would be in a deeper depression. I feel no joy in this movie.
This would be not suitable for younger children as it for them would be too boring; kids would become fidgety and begin screaming in the theatre seats.
Leave the kids home and stay home with them.

    Fascinating look behind the curtain

    by JimJabu

Here's an example of when more is less. There is a terrific engaging story about the visit of the King and Queen of England to the U.S. in 1939, but it is mixed in with a story about a pedestrian affair between Roosevelt and his 5th cousin. The screen comes alive when we follow the King and Queen, but the love affair angle is deadly dull.

Check Your Morals at the Door

    by

While I was enjoying watching this film, as it is fun, clever, and well acted, the last five minutes spoil the whole film. While I understand that people cheat, and do a many other terrible things as well, I don't appreciate the tone of, "Well, it's okay because everyone involved agreed to it," that this movie so clearly took. Aside from my moral objection to the tone of cheaters, however, I liked the movie. Bill Murray was fantastic, as well the rest of the cast, and the cinematography beautifully captured New York's agrarian side. There are two scenes in particular that stand out, one for being glorious and one for being strange. First, strange: the movie makes a big point to talk about their being cousins, but they're fifth or sixth cousins. There's nothing wrong with that except that they actually know one another. So when they become intimate I feel like it's trying to make FDR into an even bigger creep. The glorious: FDR and King George VI alone time over drinks was masterful.

    High Expectations ...

'Hyde Park on Hudson' captures an interesting moment and shines a light on the lives of important figures in American history. I came to the movie with high expectations which were partially met. The movie is good - not great. Bill Murray is good - not great. Again, my expectations were perhaps unrealistic. Overall, the pacing of the movie is a tad slow. But the revelations about FDR's private life, his sexual liaisons, and his disability plus the tacit blindness or 'gentlemen's agreement' of those around him (not least of all the press) made for an intriguing story line that held my interest throughout.

    Nice little movie, Missed Opportunity

    by

There were two very compelling stories elbowing each other for screen time,
I would love to have seen either better told - the visit of the King and Queen of England on the eve of WWII and the romantic side of a great man... unfortunately both stories were not very well developed. The film was well cast and acted, especially by Bill Murray, but the script didn't give him much to work with. It would have made a fair episode of Masterpiece Theater on PBS. I would recommend it as a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours but, on the whole, was a little disappointed in missing the film it could have been or the film I hoped to see.

    BORING !!

Although I am younger (by at least 30 years) than the majority of people who were in the theater , and probably have some personal memory of FDR, I was interested in seeing this movie having seen Lincoln and was so amazed by how much history I didn't know. The movie was slow and dragged from the onset. I felt the there was no discernible plot; was it the visit from the Royals, infidelity, FDR's physical disability and its effect on his presidency?
I was impressed by Bill Murray's ability to play a character other than comedic, however this movie is not one I'd recommend to others.

    hyde park on the hudson

i never thought my opinion would be closer to rex reed's than a.o.scott's, but with excellent acting, humor throughout ,the look of history, and mostly good camerawork -- definitely good enough.

    A little slow

The movie was not what I expected. I guess from the previews I thought the movie was going to be more about The President and the King,
I guess my interpatation was incorrect.
It seemed to be a slow pasted movie. I think the movie was worth seeing, Bill Murray did a wonderful job.

    Didn't care for it....

They should make it clear that the movie theme is FDR's affair....the advertising indicates it's more about him...and, I never got past seeing Bill Murray...never got to seeing FDR...LINCOLN was a far better movie.....

It was a good movie, but I was completely unprepared...!

My mum and I liked what we saw from the trailer, so we thought...'Let's just go catch it today'...!
Usually I research a movie before I go and see it, but this time I didn't....and we were in such shock! We didn't prepare ourselves for the 'nature' of this movie and it depicted FDR...! Bill Murray did a superb fob as FDR and it was nice to see him in a less comedic role. Samuel West and Olivia Colman were the BEST surprise of this movie and were highly enjoyable. Laura Linney, as always, was a gift to the screen.

    Pass on this one

Maybe my viewing was colored by having just visited FDR's house in Hyde Park the weekend before, but this is a really muddled film. It's not bad, just confused. It doesn't seem to know what it is. Maybe Richard Nelson should have written it as a play (seems like maybe he originally did) but it's fine in some places, laughable in others, and dull in many. Bill Murray and Laura Linney, as always, are great, but what they have to work with is so thin and surface-level, it's kind of hard to watch sometimes.

Skip the movie - visit the real Hyde Park instead. Now THAT is honestly fantastic.

    Hyde Park on Hudson

Bridge players know a peek is as good as a finesse and this small glimpse into the life of FDR provides the viewer with more information about American history, even that of England, than many a history book and by far exceeds films trying to encompass a life time. The film acts like a core sample of the Earth's surface, digging deeply beneath the soil of these famous people and breaks through at their very source. Without excessive drama, the film quietly invites the viewer to catch a brief glance of what's real behind the facades of the great, famous man so pivotal in the world when humanity showed up at its worst and a few showed up to lead them to their finest hour.

As for Bill Murray, was he born to play the part? Even knowing the man personally did not prevent experiencing him as FDR on the screen. He so erased his outer personality as all good actors do and Laura Linney did as well, there was nothing left of this very funny man to mar the perfection of his creation.

    An okay movie..

I'd say it was just okay. The actors did a fine job, it was just a little slow in parts. The King and Queen had some very funny lines though.

    Hyde Park on Hudson

This is a lovely film, with fine performances all around. Some people will not like it since it portrays FDR as a flawed but sympathetic man. He was a lonely man who needed companionship from women that was not provided by his alienated wife Eleanor. This is a small snapshot of him at a crucial time, before war broke out in Europe. The portraits of the young King and Queen of England are charming. This is really aimed at an older generation of viewers. Most young people, especially those craving action and excitement, will find it boring. We enjoyed it very much.

    Hyde Park on Hudson

I thought the movie was interesting and entertaining. Found out a couple of interesting facts. Thought the characters played their parts very well. Scenery was beautiful. A friend said their local news showed film being filmed in Roosevelt's house in Hyde Park. It had some funny scenes. Really enjoyed the king and queen of England and Roosevelt.
