worst movie, ever

I was sucked in by critic reviews and took my 13yr with me. Bad mistake! No main character in the movie had ever seen a bathtub, clean clothes, a napkin, spoon or knife. I was seasick from the the first five minutes where they camera bounced up and down non-stop. There were at least three minutes of close ups of dead animal guts but of course they were able to stop the camera bouncing during those angonizingly long close ups! I kept wondering why didn't anyone call child protective services for the kids?

Charming

Charming but different than the previews, much more serious. Hushpuppy is great, no doubt about it. Wanted a little more background, character development on a couple other characters

Beasts of the Southern Wild

This is an elegantly shot story that captures a snapshot of life in a fictional, backwoods Louisiana community. Being a gal from Small Town, LA, I can vouch for the characters' authenticity. Beasts is the first depiction of unknown Louisiana culture that highlights the beautiful as much as the ugly. Hushpuppy is an absolute DOLL, and she steals the show with her simultaneously wise and innocent expressions. Do yourself a favor and go see this flick. You'll be transported to another life in another land, and you'll find the imagery nothing less than intoxicating.

Oh my gosh. You must be kidding. Worst bunch of garbage I've ever seen. Left the theater. Wish I had my money back. If this is award winning film I'm must be on the wrong planet. Story was stupid and camera work gave me a headache. My girlfriend and I felt violated when we left the theater. Sick from the beginning.

One of the dullest most boring movie experiences EVER

Just horrendous and a sooooo boring, where people do irritating things -- refuse medical care, refuse a better living situation. I kept hearing how great this movie was and I was completely taken aback at how NOT oscar worthy this movie is. A couple people in my theater even walked out.

really weird indy film-don't bother

We went to this movie because of the great reviews. Little girl is cute, but truth is the story line and the setting are very depressing and squalid. Definitely would not recommend this disturbing movie about uneducated, drunk, pitiful people being portrayed like they are conveying deep truths. Wish we had gone to see something else!

Moving and amazing. Must see!!!

In an American setting the vast majority of us could never imagine, a unique group of characters live a life that is similarly unimaginable. The heroine is similarly unexpected and exquisitely depicted by Quvenzhané Wallis, backed up by a superb group of actors.
Deserving of many film awards.

TERRIBLE

One of the worst films I have seen in a very long time. Trailers were totally misleading. It's painfully dark and utterly depressing. Turn your local news on or read the paper, you won't feel as bad with reality as you will leaving the theatre after watching this total waste!

Interestingly, that the previous reviews are all definately either "Love or Hate". It is difficult for me to understand why anyone would not be moved by this movie. Perhaps it is uncomfortable for them to be made aware of how dire other peoples lives can be.... in your own country. There are no words more telling than the positive ones before mine....but this child should definately be an Oscar nominee. thru her optomism and courage, she pulls you in and takes you with her on this journey...and I was really glad to be along with her.

Beast of a Movie and Don't Miss It

Fell into this movie, but glad I did. This movie is very Artsy, moving and is unbelievably entertaining for a low budget film. I agree with the general census that the eight year old lead (Quvenzhané Wallis) puts in an Oscar Winning performance and at least will be nominated. The movie morals do not get in the way or sound too preachy. We must save our planet and this movie is a move in the right direction.

Just have to see it to get it

All the revews before my post totally capture my feelings and interpretation of this film. It's hard to describe, and is a film that you just have to see to understand what everyone is talking about. I am a huge fan of independent films and as I always say, it's a shame that so many people never see such quality films, and they spend millions of dollars on such crappy mainstream block bushers. What a loss for them. If this movie is playing in a theater near you, go see it.

Terrible

A terrible story to begin with. There are no redeeming characters, even Hushpuppy is a jerk. An awful portrayal of coastal Louisian residents, who are not drunken, felonious, yahoos. I'm not sure if this was red-state rant on a fictional 9th ward or a blue state rant about how we need to up the nanny-state or just a bad, bad movie. The cruelty to animals was gratuitous and unnessary. Just bad!
