    Wonderful, gritty fantasy, surrealistic reality

    by

This film is captivating. You keep wanting to know what's going to happen next, but are afraid to see the fruition of the most current theme.
The performances are heart-stopping, the circumstances heart-wrenching, yet there is love, loyalty
bravery, fantastic fantasy, and truth to a promise. Make sure you experience it!

Beutiful, raw and emotional-parable for understanding

The Beast of Sourthern Wild offers a parable about the survivors-ship in A Katrina like disaster from the eyes of child. Living in the wild of submerged back water bayou, this child shares her experiences of love, loss and strength. A beautiful and sad film, powerful in story and cinematography.

Review Beasts of the Southern Wild

I enjoyed very much the child's perspective througout the move and the mesmerizing acting skills of the little girl. However the story did no quite convey a clear message.

    Moments of Beauty and Brilliance

Overall, "Beasts of The Southern Wild" s a good movie. Not great, but good. If you've got a good home theater set-up, you can easily wait for it to come out on Blu-Ray/DVD/Streaming. There's nothing here that will be that much better in a theater than on a good sized LCD/LED screen.

It certainly isn't for everyone. It's slow to the point that it felt like an hour and a half should have passed before it was over. But it is touching and the girl playing "Hushpuppy" does a fantastic job. Also, there are some scenes that are stunningly beautiful (aesthetically) and I did really enjoy the score and music featured in the film.

I've seen Beasts of the Southern Wild twice and looking forward to seeing it AGAIN! The actors were great and the script was excellent. I laughed and cried. A good "get away" film.

Do NOT see Beasts of the Southern Wild

    Special effects: boring
    Unanswered questions: dozens
    Plot: nearly nonexistent
Acting: the only worthwhile aspect of the film
Bottom line: not worth the price of the ticket

    Beasts of the Southern Wilds

    by KC_123

This is not a movie for kids, despite it's rating and trailer. My 13 and 11 year olds were upset and confused. The movie romanticized poverty and ignorance. Its treatment of environmental issues was foolishly simplistic. We found it relentlessly depressing.

The choice of the choppy, hand-held camera work made the cinematography distracting. Maybe it is supposed to feel more gritty and real, but the movie didn't need any help there. The nausea-inducing filming did nothing to enhance to our experience of the movie.

    young special

Hush Puppy is the new girl champion of the silver screen. What a powerfully adorable performance. This is love on the highest level of strength.

    Brilliant!

This movie takes you into a world where many of us have never dared to venture,
(but could find ourselves one day!). In spite of all of the apparent suffering, poverty and addiction symptoms of the disenfranchised, we find people who have connection and community with the earth, the sea and each other This is also the story of a father's drive to use his last remaining breaths, which is all that he has, to empower his daughter to survive, thrive, and assume her connection with all living things; which is more, I'm sure, than most young middle and upper class girls (and boys) will ever get from either of their parents.

    Not a Good Movie

Absolutely the worst movie I have ever seen in spite of a great performance by a 6 year old child. No plot, no flow. Nothing. Just aimless wandering with a camera with a lot of scenes that were fragmented disjointed. Walked out mid movie. Couldn't take the constant attempt to portray poverty and a hurricane tragedy as a form of artistry. Don't waste you money with this one. It's a 1.5 star movie and that is being generous.

AN EXPERIENCE NEVER TO BE DUPLICATED. A CHARACTER, "HUSHPUPPY", NEVER TO BE REPLICATED!

Achingly poignant, mythically powerful film, told from the perspective of six-year-old "Hushpuppy" (Quvenzhanem Wallis, a forceful sprite with a gift from the gods); living in the disastrously destitute Louisiana bayou; alone, she resides in a shack, next door to her abusive, alcoholic, terminally ill father, "Wink" (brilliant portrayal by Dwight Henry) in an island of muck, detritus, prehistoric, called "The Bathtub" a euphemism for an ark, comparable to "Noah?s"; when the deluge strikes, only the few, the "chosen" and their animals survive. This is a community rarely focused upon (herein lies the genius and prescience of Benh Zeitlin, Lucy Alibar; based on the stage play she wrote, "Juicy and Delicious"); comfortable in their inebriated squalor, entitled in their refusal to move from their doomed environment, weirdly, they demand and earn our respect...

    FOUR STARS!!!!

    Truly enjoyed it

    by dugfree

I really enjoyed this movie. I 'm not sure how I'd describe it. Moving, funny, parts were disturbing. But it did leave me with a good feeling in the end.

    Beasts of the Southern Wild

Totally absurd with no redeeming quality to the story. Yes the young girl is very good, but that doesn't make this into a coherent story or message. The premise that a five year old is that stoic and able to somehow draw meaning out of the chaos of this portrayed life is absurd and ridiculous. I'm usually a fan of movies with meaning, but this one comes no where close. Maybe 1 in 100 million people or children could come out of that much chaos, dysfunction and stupidity some sense of a larger picture that fits together, but this movie is a million miles away from making even that case.

Proof Positive Film Making Is An Art Form.

Of the many hundreds of films I see on the screen each year, there are a rare few that defy the commercial mold, that stand the test of purity which genuinely transcends the imaginable. The portrait painted here is so real, so harsh, so unbelievably ugly, yet in its repulsiveness so totally beautiful, it's impossible not to be humbled by its message. Don't see this movie expecting common entertainment. If that's the goal, you might want to look next door. What you'll find here is a world you'll likely never see anywhere else, yet as real as the one in which you and I live. This is a stunning film, unlike any other I have ever seen and I see nearly everything that's produced annually for domestic commercial exhibition, including most of the festival fare. If you love movies, really love movies, you must see this one. It will undoubtedly become a part of the most important textbooks on film making, as it stands unique among all movies ever made. See it but prepare for the unexpected.

Unique and ambitious, but kind of grim

This movie is being described as being life-affirming. I think that it's more of a study of gut-wrenching , intractable poverty--and a resilient child. The little girl should, and will, be nominated for many acting awards.

I didn't exactly enjoy the movie--mostly, it isn't much fun--but, I was impressed by it.
