    Life of Pi

Excellent movie. I read the book before going to the movie, and was amazed at how well it captured the tone and message of the book. Great special effects and you have to see this in 3-D on the big screen. Go now!

    The Life of Pi

    by rctap

I liked it Had trouble following the diialoge because of the "accent" of the actors. The "thesis" of the movie remains unclear and I'll have to ponder it all a bit more before knowing whether I understand it. The title of the film suggested more but I'm not sure what. But the idea of an answer to the "problem" remains: just as one can never solve for "pi" in math, one can never solve for the eternal seperation of ths epcies: the hero and the tiger seem to make a termporary accommodation to each other but in the end eacu goes his own way. the film was easier to view w/out the glasses.

    Life of Pi: review

A great drama. The movie is a very good rendition of the book with beautiful visual effects. I enjoyed this movie in it's entirety. The story might be better suited for grown-ups than for children.

    Wish I'd seen it in 2D - I think.

My friend and I debated whether to see the 2D or 3D version because both of us have noticed that 2D color and light are much move vivid and sharp than 3D. Hollywood/Silicon Valley really has to fix the problems with 3D. That said, we read Roger Ebert's review which lauded the 3D visuals and enjoyed the film despite or perhaps because of 3D. While kids may enjoy the stunning CGI and cinematography (particularly the seamless joining of the central characters with the sea and rest of the universe), and may be a little scared, there's little gratuitous gore. The tension between the boy and the tiger drives the drama that appeals to adults. It was a little slow at times, reminiscent of "Castaway," but the heart and soul of the story and even more, the stunning visuals were compelling enough to prevent snoozing. Unlike "Castaway," PI was not a story of man vs elements, but interactive, of man and tiger, coming to a peace such as that which we wish for in the Middle East

    Outstanding Modern Day Fable

One of the best films of the year. The 3D version adds to the film rather than distracts as in many other 3D efforts. The story is mesmerizing and thought provoking.

    Great acting, beautiful film

    by meedles

The only criticism I have is that the story is kind of self righteous and it hits you over the head with metaphors and a huge G-O-D message at the end which ruined it a bit for me. It was made up for by amazing cinematography and very good acting. The 3D was definitely worth it with this film.

    Life of Pi Is Magnificent

Visually stunning and resplendent but also a movie with depth and meaning. Fans of the book won't be disappointed but moviegoers who haven't read the book will enjoy the movie every bit as much - maybe even more.

    Watch the 2D...if that.

    by

I've concluded that the only movies worth paying 3D prices for are the Pixar movies. This movie lacked visual depth. I was expecting the animals in this movie to jump out at me and was disappointed see zero difference when I took off my 3D glasses.

Overall, Life of Pi was tedious to watch because it tried to be Avatar, Castaway, The Namesake, and Animal Kingdom all at the same time. If Ang Lee had just honed in on two of the four, like Avatar and Animal Kingdom, the movie would have been much more memorable. After all, the Bengali tiger's performance (whether cgi-induced or not) was nothing short of a miracle. Scenes like the flying fish hurricane, the carnivorous island, and the whale spotting gave Avatar a run for its money. None of this grandeur deserved to be reigned in by a self-absorbed "what does this all mean" narrative at the end of the movie.

    Xie Xie, Namaste...

    by

Well deserved Oscar for Ang Lee, possibly his finest hour (or 2) as a director. Much more than just a movie about a boy and a tiger, this meditation on science, religion and love-amongst-the ruins will have you talking and thinking well after you have left the 3D glasses behind. Needless to say, Mama Gi would be very happy...

    Great story. Love it!

We couldn't stop discussing this movie after we saw it. We love all the symbolism and finding out what really happened. This is based on a novel that won several international awards. Do your research AFTER you've seen the movie.

Underwhelmed....but the trailer sure is good :)

Ok, Life of Pi is a beautiful CGI induced movie with fine acting and special effects. But nothing really special / spectacular imho. And no way does this movie come even close to Avatar nor did the 3-D blow me away, in fact outside of a few fantasy scenes, I saw nothing special about the 3D. People reviews are right on target when they mention the over preachiness of religion and god; so if you go in for that type message throughout a movie, this may be your cup of tea. The trailer for this film is what got me hooked, but compared to the actual movie, was somewhat of a let down. Slow moving in the first 20min, and then the time at sea was just too long. After awhile, just became somewhat of a bore watching the boy and a tiger in a boat. Though, will admit the tiger scenes were spectacular and vote the Bengal Tiger as one of the best actors onboard this journey. There are some life messages for one to ponder but soon disappear once the lights come up.

    Worthwhile with minor drawbacks

    by BestMom

I read the book many years ago so was anxious to see the movie. It was a worthwhile experience, and my kids who hadn't read the book enjoyed it too! My only complaint was that due to the Indian accent some of the dialogue was a bit difficult to follow. Also I find that movies in 3D tend to be a bit dark so between that and the accent issue I feel like I need to see it a second time to really appreciate it. Also I had forgotten how the ending was frustrating to a certain extent, but it did provide for some lively debate with the kids. The book makes the ending ever so slightly easier to comprehend, though no less frustrating.
