    Not to be missed

If you have only one movie to see this holiday season, make it this one. Ang Lee's genius directorial skills combine with superb acting, lush cinematography, and awesome special effects to make for a not-to-be-missed entertainment experience.

Good movie, but not for everyone

The movie is visually stunning and full of hyperbole and life lessons. The fact that I found myself second guessing assumptions and exploring the use of metaphors at the end made this movie great for someone like me, who usually has the entire movie figured out within 20 minutes. But, my 13 year old and her friend struggled with the film and I saw other members of the audience "check out".

So, if you want a movie you can explore in detail after it is over this is right for you. If you want simple spoon fed fare this is not for you.

    A compelling story

I saw this with my 14-year-old son. It's a wonderful story that's made more complex and interesting by the fact that the story told may just be a story. Without giving too much away, I highly recommend it for adults and kids alike. It will speak differently to each generation.

    LIFE OF PI

    by mtetro

Very interesting story, good plot line and beautiful filming. It's must see and enjoy with family or friends, you will all love it! Also, I saw it in 3D, which made it even better!

    Nice to look at but...

There were setbacks to this movie. "Life of Pi," is visually gorgeous which is an identifiable trait of Ang Lee's style but the story of the film just doesn't measure up to the film's on-screen beauty. What does measure up though is the tense appeal of the drama in the film. This movie thrives off the dramatic tension between Pi and Richard Parker. Whether it is adversarial or sentimental, the two characters just deliver intensity whenever one or both is on the screen. The movie has amazing visual effects and that will appeal very well to the audience. The 3D also augments this visual appeal amazingly. This is a great coming-of-age drama but there are moments when the movie just lags. Screenwriter David Magee does a nice job creating the blueprint for Ang Lee to build the world this fantastical journey takes place but there are moments when there is disconnect and abstract symbolism leaves audiences scratching their heads."Life of Pi" is a good movie. More could have been done with it.

a visually stunning reasonable adaptation of the book

My title pretty much says it all. If you are a fan of the book, you will probably feel (as I did) that there are notable disappointments in terms of storyline and characters. But, you will probably also realize (as i did) that the omissions are due to time restrictions. I was disappointed because I was looking forward to seeing how the 2 Mr. Kumars would be handled. The answer is: they are omitted and their characteristics are morphed into Pi's parents. I was most annoyed by the insertion of a love interest for Pi in Pondicherry and the omission of his 3 spiritual gurus. I was also curious about how the film would handle the meeting with the blind Frenchman; the film omits that too. Having said all of that, the characterization and plot are MOSTLY true to the original and what the film lacks in depth/profundity, it makes up for (I suppose) with visually-delightful aesthetics. The casting is spot on; the actors do well with it. It isn't terrible, which is what I had feared it would be.

    Rare, profound, intimate

Some critics have worked hard to come up with things they did not like about The Life of Pi. The story touches upon religions, but does not probe deeply and it does not come up with any conclusions. The story uses a contrived device of the old Pi telling his experience to a journalist. The story is exciting in the middle, and not remarkable anywhere else.

These criticisms seem rubbish to me. It is like watching Gone With the Wind and complaining that the Tarleton Twins did not really look like brothers. The Life of Pi is so unlike any other movie, and so beautiful to look at, it does not have to apologize to anybody. It can be described so simply -- A boy at sea is trapped on a raft with a tiger. He has to figure out how to make the best of it. That is just what it is. The profundity past a certain point must come from us. There is real beauty in the world, and in the ocean. And there is death and suffering. We are bound to taste both. Think of that!

great date movie for me and my husband

    by Stac827

we saw the 3D version and it was absolutely stunning to watch. it has a beautiful story, one that makes you reflective about the human experience. I loved watching it with my husband- it was a great drama that appeals to both sexes equally, I thought.

Life of Pi is good, but over-rated

    by

I thought Life of Pi was very good. However, I really didn't like the ending. It kind of left me feeling as if I was left high and dry, without knowing whether the whole thing was just a figment of Pi's imagination or whether it really happened. I needed closure and I didn't get it.

    Another castaway movie...

It was alright. Another classic cast away movie. A lot of obvious ocean "set" scenes, where the ocean water is completely still. The story was another of the same. Wait for this to come out on DVD.

    Best Movie of 2012!

This is not only the most thought provoking movie in a long, long time, but the story is amazing, and emothional. I have never considered myself an Ang Lee fan, but that has certainly changed. The manner in which he tells this story is simply visually stunning, and will keep you thinking for a long, long time. Great job, in every category!! Thank you for the experience

Fantastic tale that had you guessing at the end - beautiful cinematography

This was a truly magical tale, beautifully shot by Ang Lee, who uses 3D in a way that does not detract from the film, but enhances it and makes you feel as if you are in the film. The story is touching, heartbreaking, funny, and brutal. I definitely recommend it.

    Amazing special effects and story

This was one of the best stories I have heard told in a long time. The special effects were great. My 6 and 9 year old son's thought it was awesome as well.

    Great Movie!

This is an excellent movie. Total tear-jerker (and I don't cry!)! it is rated PG, so I took my 8 year old son, but it's a little too much for a little kid to handle. For 12 and up, it's a MUST SEE.

    Life of Pi 3D

Dark print. Bad color. Left out part where he was blind and met another man. Good CGI. Good movie overall. Book was, of course, better. It is possible that I bought into the hype too much.
