    Life of PI

Not what I expected from the trailers. Started out a little slow, but once it got going, it was quite good. Special effects in 3D were awesome. Well worth the trip to the theater. The animal attacks may prove troublesome for younger viewers.

Fantastic tale that had you guessing at the end - beautiful cinematography

This was a truly magical tale, beautifully shot by Ang Lee, who uses 3D in a way that does not detract from the film, but enhances it and makes you feel as if you are in the film. The story is touching, heartbreaking, funny, and brutal. I definitely recommend it.

Good movie, but not for everyone

The movie is visually stunning and full of hyperbole and life lessons. The fact that I found myself second guessing assumptions and exploring the use of metaphors at the end made this movie great for someone like me, who usually has the entire movie figured out within 20 minutes. But, my 13 year old and her friend struggled with the film and I saw other members of the audience "check out".

So, if you want a movie you can explore in detail after it is over this is right for you. If you want simple spoon fed fare this is not for you.

Best movie I've seen this year

Life of Pi's original storyline and stunning imagery really puts you into the movie itself! Ang Lee has did it again...what a beautiful film. It keep you thinking and questioning long after the movie is over. Highly recommended!!

    Awesome

I could not have been more pleased or impressed with this movie. Brilliant all round: acting, Direction, story, effects... everything. An entertaining, meaningful, moving experience. Funny at times, almost horrific at others (but not in a gory, visual way- scary within the mind). The film and Director Ang Lee should both win Oscars.

    loses its magic

    by nreavey

It's a beautiful film to watch and it has you on the edge of your seat in places. However, it loses its magic towards the end as the plot takes on a strange twist that weakens the entire story. I have not read the book, and I am not sure if this movie successfully translates the message it intends. I was not left with a sense of wonder, or questionning the universe and my life was certainly not affirmed. It was just Meh!

    Beautifully made!

A moving story, Life of Pi blends fantasy and reality with great sensitivity and creativity. The acting by Irfan Khan and Suraj Sharma is touching and real. Ang Lee shows how large the scope of his creativity and sensitivity is. The use of 3D enhances the emotional impact, so this movie should be enxperienced in 3D.
This is a great family movie.

    As good as the book!

I have been a fan of the book for years. The movie does not disappoint. I saw it in IMAX 3D and was enchanted nd amazed!

    A compelling story

I saw this with my 14-year-old son. It's a wonderful story that's made more complex and interesting by the fact that the story told may just be a story. Without giving too much away, I highly recommend it for adults and kids alike. It will speak differently to each generation.

great date movie for me and my husband

    by Stac827

we saw the 3D version and it was absolutely stunning to watch. it has a beautiful story, one that makes you reflective about the human experience. I loved watching it with my husband- it was a great drama that appeals to both sexes equally, I thought.

kinda dumb for adults; probably charming for 10-15

    by dtmf

animal animation is spectacular, so for pure visuals it can be fun, but the plot is silly, the acting rather hystrionic, and the story-within-a-story frame uninteresting. You do NOT learn about religions, since the theology that keeps on coming up is utterly incoherent. Treat this as a movie you take the kids to, no more than that.

Life of Pi is good, but over-rated

    by

I thought Life of Pi was very good. However, I really didn't like the ending. It kind of left me feeling as if I was left high and dry, without knowing whether the whole thing was just a figment of Pi's imagination or whether it really happened. I needed closure and I didn't get it.

a visually stunning reasonable adaptation of the book

My title pretty much says it all. If you are a fan of the book, you will probably feel (as I did) that there are notable disappointments in terms of storyline and characters. But, you will probably also realize (as i did) that the omissions are due to time restrictions. I was disappointed because I was looking forward to seeing how the 2 Mr. Kumars would be handled. The answer is: they are omitted and their characteristics are morphed into Pi's parents. I was most annoyed by the insertion of a love interest for Pi in Pondicherry and the omission of his 3 spiritual gurus. I was also curious about how the film would handle the meeting with the blind Frenchman; the film omits that too. Having said all of that, the characterization and plot are MOSTLY true to the original and what the film lacks in depth/profundity, it makes up for (I suppose) with visually-delightful aesthetics. The casting is spot on; the actors do well with it. It isn't terrible, which is what I had feared it would be.
