The Return of the Character Comedy
There was a time long ago when bit parts in great comedies were well written and well executed. It's back. Every detail of Wreck-It Ralph is superb - well written, well acted, well drawn. It's as rich in treats as the land of the game Sugar Rush it portrays. Kids and adults will like it. But that's an understatement. From the "aw shucks" country sincerity of Fix-it Felix whose "affection" is "rebuffed" despite his "honeydew" glow, to the full-metal-jacket starship trooper beauty is always speaks in awkwardly dire hyperbole, to to Sour Bill, the superbly glum herald of the kingdom of Sugar Rush, everything in Wreck-It Ralph has been lovingly rendered. It's chock full ofclever references back to, well, every computer game ever. But it also harkens back to such landmark films The Wizard of Oz - not just in references the O-E-O guards of the wicked witch - but also in the lavish attention to detail that made old-school films great. This is comic film making at its finest.
