    Better than expected

    by csbinva

Was very reluctant when we heard that it was going to be broken into three movies, but the time flew by and ended about where we expected. The tying of the story lines together was very well done and if anything makes you want to go back and watch the original three. This is one of the rare movies that I would gladly go back and see in the theater again.

Good but a bit too drawn out

    by lnelder

The 3D effects were awesome and the imagery was amazing, but at times it seemed that they were just unnecessarily drawing things out. The monsters (orcs) were pretty scary looking and I wouldnt recommend taking a child under the age of 12. It's very violent - beheadings, blood and guts. They actually gave ME nightmares. haha I was also disappointed in Gandolf's magic or lack there of...

    The Hobbit

The film is for the most part, excellent. However, it would not hurt at all if you read the book before you go. Otherwise, it could be somewhat bewildering. The portrayal of each dwarf is superb. Peter Jackson has nailed it again. He's the undisputed go-to guy for all things Hobbit and all things LOTR.

Great movie, can't wait for Part 2!

    by

I love what Peter Jackson and his crew have done with this movie! It really is as accurate and true to the book as it could be, given the time restraints on a movie. Perfectly cast as well! I heard a few complaints from some other movie-goers about it ending in the middle, but I knew it was going to be like that. The 3D version is definitely the way to go, and this coming from someone not usually thrilled about 3D.

    overall ok

    by

this movie takes a little bit to really get rolling i even had a guy fall asleep and start snoring in the beginning of the movie but once the adventure starts the movie gets better the visuals are really cool and the mountain scenes are animated beautifully if you are a fan of the cartoon version as i was you will probably enjoy this

    Pretty good

    by

It has been a long time since read the Hobbit, so I don't remember all of it, can't say if it followed the book faithfully. While I thought all the Lord of the Rings movies were great, this one seemed just ok. I saw it in 3D, I think at regular frame rate. The 3D added to the beauty of it at times, like in the natural shots of the scenery (overall, scenery was very good - trees, forest) or when the people were interacting, but I thought some of the CGI 3D parts didn't look real, so I was a little disappointed at that. Overall I thought the movie was ok, but I didn't find it as rich as the LOTR movies. Perhaps I anticipated those more, so had more invested in them, not sure, but this movie just didn't seem as rich. I agree with some critics also, that it was too long - the last 1.5 hours went by fast but after first hour I was looking at my watch.

    Outstanding

    by dcperk

First, let me preface by saying that I'm a huge Tolkien fan. In fact, "The Hobbit" is one of my most favorite fantasy books of all time. With that said, I loved the first installment of this soon to be trilogy. The acting was excellent and Peter Jackson once again does Tolkien justice in another return to Middle Earth. I viewed in 3D and I would recommend to everyone. But be warned, it is long and much of the first half of the movie is devoted toward plot and story building. Some have been very critical of this, however I feel it's necessary and certainly worthwhile. The final hour is non-stop, heart pounding action and really sets the tone for the next installment. The cinematography is once again fantastic as are the beautiful landscapes and lush scenery. So overall, this is an outstanding film and a great beginning to what's another epic adventure back to Middle Earth. Grab your friends and family and go see it!

    The Hobbit - Five STARS

I read The Hobbit over 40 years ago and quickly became a J.R.R.Tolkein fan. I saw the movie last night in 3D; and commented, repeatedly, to my sister about how awesome the film was. The Shire was as I imagined it to be. The characters (Bilbo, Gandalf, the Dwarvs, the Elves) were consistent with the imagery Tolkein presented in his novel. I remember the many violent confrontations from the novel; and the film captured all of it including Orcs & other Middle Earth bad guys. I plan to see The Hobbit again in 3D, of course. This film is not for small children because of the many violent confrontations as the adventure unfolds.

    Imagination Revealed

I have read the book. I have also read it to my sons in preparation of it being made. We were ready with high expectations. I found it more imaginative than I expected. The license with story line was good but it is all the imagery that stole the show. I say run to it, do not walk. It is great and best on the big stage of the theater!

Go with no expectation if you are a Lord of the Ring fan

My wife is a Lord of the Ring Fan. After the movie she sadi that she was so disappointed. She would not go to the movies for next two installments. If you go with no expectations it's okay movie to watch. Peter Jackson should not have stretched it to be a triology. Two and half star.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

    by ejarch

    Overall, very disappointed.

I cannot believe the team that adapted LOR with such discipline and finesse could produce what appears to be an assemblage of illogical narrative plot lines and edits joined up with repetitive fight scenes.

For example, the change to the three trolls story makes no sense. The change from eating nothing but mutton yesterday, today and tomorrow (even though as the line is classic line is spoken one of the trolls is carrying a fresh pony who would realize that their riders were nearby) is incoherent. Even the strange move of negotiating terms so that all the dwarfs end up in sacks is odd at best. Gandalf's trickery (imitating the trolls' voices) is lost altogether. And what's the deal with discussions about parasites? It is but one example of a solid story line changed for no reason that I can see.

Am I a purist? No. There were many changes in the LOR that were needed and kept the sense of the narrative.

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME

The graphics in this movie are just AMAZING. It really feels like you are in the story. It is one of those movies that I like to see over and over again! It really is nice, the way that the movie is 48 fps. It is a MUST GO.
