    The Hobbit

My wife and I watched this movie in 3D and the special effects were awesome. If you enjoyed the Lord of the Rings trilogy, you'll enjoy this movie just as much. If there was a negative to this movie it's the ending, which isn't what you expect.

    As wonderful as expected

    by

We saw this movie in 3D and it did not disappoint. The story was wonderful and engaging and the time flew by. The 3D effects were incredible. It was especially pleasing to see the familiar faces of those actors who reprised their roles from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. My 9-year old daughter wants to see it, but I don't know that it's the best film for a kid. She's pretty clever and knows the difference between fantasy and realism, but some of the scenes are pretty creepy and scary and there is no shortage of violent battle scenes, which I loved but may not be appropriate for kids. Fans of the director should all really love this movie. I know I did. I would love to go see this movie again on the big screen.

    The Hobbit

Well, the beginning was long and drawn out. I fell asleep! But the end was fantastic. In between, well, for me, it was one big snooze.

One third of the way there.......

Movie had incredible special effects! My neck still hurts from trying to avoid objects coming at me in 3D. There were several scenes that really did not have to be included at this time; the artsy ones can be added to the Director's cut DVD package[do i really need to see a thrush fly in front of me and break a nut?]. My recollection is it is about 40% of the way into the book at the end. I cant wait for the next one!

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in Teal and Orange

    by

It was amazing, the most immersive and visually satisfying moving I've ever seen. (RealD 3D HFR in a Cinemark XD.)

48fps (aka "HFR") takes a couple minutes to get used to. At first it looks like the action is sped up, like 1.5x normal speed. It also has a bit of a soap opera look, I was thinking in my head "These are just dudes in costumes walking around in a set, this looks too lifelike." But after a moment, I realized that maybe this was actually footage of real dwarves; as if a Nature documentary team had somehow found their way into Middle Earth and recorded what they saw. Then, The Hobbit became the most immersive film I've ever seen.

This is coupled with the 3D, extending the feeling that you're looking not into a movie set but into a real place. Though, because the 3D matches your natural stereo vision, it means there's only one place in the picture you can look without eye strain; in some shots it was unclear where that place was.

    Fantastic

    by exrabe

I enjoyed LoTR, but The Hobbit is a lot truer to the original vision. All the important bits are there, plus some key history that connects in the backgrounds of the dwarfs. Nice mix of humor also.

Perhaps a little long for someone who hasn't read the books multiple times.

InCREDible in 48fps! Will Go Back To See It In IMAX

Have no idea why anyone is saying the movie drags at places. Maybe they just aren't into or don't understand the LOTR series but this was incredible on par+in certain ways better than the trilogy which are my favorite movies ever.

The 48 frames per second takes a little getting used to, but after the first scene where it just comes off as really different and maybe seems like it's moving quickly, you get used to it by then. Once you do adjust to it it seems almost like you are stepping into another dimension of reality, where the incredible detail and lush colors along w 3d makes it seem like another world. It was breathtaking!

I usually don't care for 3d as it in every case at least that I have seen it, it has either was the sucky upconverted kind, was distracting, not consistent, not well thought out or was dizzying, for the Hobbit it was VERY well done, consistent+very well done. They corrected the Hobbits size scale+CGI was seamless+AWESOME! Can't wait to see it in IMAX!

    Does Not Disappoint!

Peter Jackson brings to life the Hobbit in this first movie of the trilogy. He reintroduces us to characters from LOTR and all new characters for this adventure. So much to take in that more than 1 viewing is required!

Make sure you take your potty break before it starts because it is a long haul before you can go again!

    The Hobbit:An Unexpected Journey 3d

Tolkein purists will have the same issues with The Hobbit that they had w/LOTR, so let's just get that out of the way up front. Much like LOTR, Jackson & crew do an admirable job telling a story in such a way that makes it acessible to all comers. I'm not sure that it needed to be done in 3d (maybe IMAX was better?) or stretched out into 3 films but that's just my opinion. Once again beautifully shot, with a good eye for visual detail. I didn't get the motion sickness thing people had mentioned with the faster film speed or whatever it was.

If you liked the LOTR there's a fairly safe chance you'll like this one too. When i go to the movies I want to be entertained and this movie entertained me. It's not the Hobbit I read when I was younger necessarily, but that's okay, I'll get over it, I 'm sure. I plan on seeing it again, because there are scenes where SO MUCH is going on that I'm sure I missed a bunch.

Good movie, can't wait for the rest.

A bit long but incredibly well done

And as for length, this is only part 1 of 3! It's going to be awhile before we get to the ending!

Fantastic effects, pity that the acting isn't quite at that same level. Gollum is incredible though.

If you read the Hobbit and liked it then you have to go. You don't really have a choice now do you?

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D

The movie was very slow moving for the first hour. It got better after that. Really didn't see the point of 3D, nothing great to see with the 3D. Not as good as the others

    Worth the wait

    by Marnus

I went to the midnight showing-the first one i ever went to-and it was amazing! The cinematography was just incredible, especially in 3d. I dont think i blinked for 3 hrs because i was afraid i would miss something lol. Often times , if a movie is good, it will stay true to the original book or story-Peter Jacksons movie went beyond this and not only stayed true to the book, but truly brought the book to life. Can't wait to see the second part:)

Peter Jackson Needs a Chill Pill

    by

Can we get an intervention for Peter Jackson? It's too bad he'll never make anything to compare with LOTR, because he's certainly trying hard. Too hard! Ease up a little! The Hobbit starts out all cutesy (yuk), with comical hairstyles and dwarfish hijinks. But once they get on the road and start fighting, it seems like they never stop. The action is frenetic, and a headache-inducing blur in 3D. Then it comes to abrupt end, before they ever even see the dragon. This mess needs some judicious editing, maybe as far back as the script. I didn't think there was enough material for another trilogy, but I guess PJ can stretch the fight scenes to fill the time allotted. There is a BIG budget for Orc costumes, but the Orcs in LOTR didn't feel compelled to speak Orkish and I don't care if they have a language or not. The LOTR cast is back, altho Cate Blanchett looks like she has a ramrod up her.....Maybe her tiara was too tight. I'll go see the next two but I'm already disappointed.

The Hobbit - worth seeing in 3D

Good movie! About 3/4 of the way through it I realized there were going to be 2 more movies, which kind of disappointed me. As other reviews have said, I thought I was going to see The Hobbit!

Still! It was a great film. Martin Freeman is a fabulous choice for Billbo Baggins. Ian McKellen is awesome as always. Beautiful in 3D, which is not always worth the headache those glasses usually give me. I look forward to seeing the next 2 installments!
