It's like Star Wars episode I

    by cg_fan

If you read the book, The Hobbit is a wonderfully engaging fairy tale set in Middle Earth, full of adventure, magic, faerie folks, monsters, and epic deeds. The Lord of the Rings is a deep, involved tragedy, also set in Middle Earth, with some of the same characters, taking place after the events told in The Hobbit.

Peter Jackson has recast The Hobbit as a direct prequel of LOTR. He's drawn from his own imagination, and from the various other story sources for Middle Earth like the Appendices of LOTR, and the Silmarillion to flesh out a more suspenseful story line. In short, he changed it.

This has the effect of making the LOTR movies like Episodes 4, 5, and 6 of Star Wars, and now this movie is Episode 1. Complete with Jar Jar Binks, aka Radagast the Brown. Radagast is a bumbling fool with a birds nest under his hat and the associated bird pooh dribbling down his face, driving a sled pulled by talking rabbits. It's Stupid.

Overall, fun movie, but it's NOT The Hobbit I loved.

    Great story coming to life

    by

If you were a fan of The Lord of the Ring trilogy you'll love this movie. Very cool to see characters from the rings trilogy ! Lots of Action! 3D was very cool.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D

Absolutely did not disappoint! Its everything we hoped for and more. The wide range scenery shots were breathtaking and the special effects were just as good if not better than the previous movies. Loved the story line and comic moments were definitely funny. Is this for children under 8? There are violent battles and I don't think the real young should participate just yet. Hope it doesn't take too long for the sequel to come, because we are already chomping at the bit.

If you love Tolkein's works you'll love the Hobbit

Look, I get that the timeline's a bit screwed up, but we're seeing more of Middle Earth than we've ever seen before, and things that I never could have hoped would have made it to a movie theatre. The Hobbit is fantastic.

    Must see

    by

Amazing. I wish more members of the actual White Council had been shown, but everything else was brilliant. Erebor and Rivendell were 500% better than anything I'd ever imagined and everything was mindblowingly good. I did see it in 48fps and 3d though and I don't think it was necessary.

    Well Done!

Yes, it's true, I'm a huge Tolkien fan & have seen/own the Lord of the Rings trilogy. However, The Hobbit/Unexpected Journey was a fabulous, fanciful ride! They played out the story well, used the 3D effects in a way that enhanced the movie, not the special effects and left me wanting more...go see it! Definitely!!!

    Nearly perfect.

    by

The Hobbit is absolutely fantastic. Everything I have wanted since I first learned about Peter Jackson adapting the Lord of the Rings to film. I often found myself smiling in the theater and filled with the same wonder as I was those many years ago; when I first read The Hobbit.

    Wonderful!!! Simply wonderful!

For a LOTR fan, this scratches a very deep itch. It delivers all of the visual spectacle that I have come to love from this franchise, as well as a powerful and heartfelt story. For a movie running 169 minutes, the time flew by as I was sucked into a world in which I wanted to spend more time. The 3D experience was fantastic, as it allowed me to feel part of the story and especially enjoyable to have the experience of being able to virtually wander the Bilbo's Hobbit hole.

There are much better ways to spend nearly 3 hours!

    by

3D effects were awesome ............. but the movie was overly long. It was the first time in my life that I dozed off during a movie! Almost certainly will NOT see the sequels.

    Pretty good

    by

It has been a long time since read the Hobbit, so I don't remember all of it, can't say if it followed the book faithfully. While I thought all the Lord of the Rings movies were great, this one seemed just ok. I saw it in 3D, I think at regular frame rate. The 3D added to the beauty of it at times, like in the natural shots of the scenery (overall, scenery was very good - trees, forest) or when the people were interacting, but I thought some of the CGI 3D parts didn't look real, so I was a little disappointed at that. Overall I thought the movie was ok, but I didn't find it as rich as the LOTR movies. Perhaps I anticipated those more, so had more invested in them, not sure, but this movie just didn't seem as rich. I agree with some critics also, that it was too long - the last 1.5 hours went by fast but after first hour I was looking at my watch.

    Another long walk

    by

As with most of Peter Jackson's work, this one is beautifully shot and edited. I think if I hadn't seen all of the Lord of The Rings films, I would have been blown away by The Hobbit. Unfortunately, it was really just another long walk and seemed a bit slow to develop only to resolve with "To Be Continued".

    Good, not great

It looked like an LOTR movie -- great effects, great music, etc. But it had a rote, by-the-numbers feel to it -- for me, it was missing the labor-of-love atmosphere that the LOTR movies had.

And my son hated the "to be continued" ending. Welcome to the way I felt at the end of The Empire Strikes Back, kid. At least you don't have to wait three years.

    Fun Movie

Great movie, but just as a warning, it will be the first of many more to come. Don't bother seeing in 3D, not needed. Really fun movie with lots of fun! Kids will love it, it is kinda like watching the first book of the Hobbit with several volumes to follow but well worth the money to see.

    Too LONG!!

The movie and special effects really captured the book, but the initial scenes at Baggins' house took way to long to develop. Bring a lot of popcorn...
