The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D Movie Review

Wow. That was the first thought that came to mind as I left the theater. The 3D blew me away. The visual effects were mind-boggling. And the story was fantastic. Did it feel like a video game? No. In a single word, this movie is fantastic. No bad language at all. None. The acting is fabulous. Now we come to the bad things. I wouldn't advise you to take any young children, because some of the violence is pretty bad at times. The whole movie is incredibly intense. Also, among Christian circles, something of concern would be the magic. And, in places, it can be pretty intense. And, some of the characters to a child would be horrifying. Overall, I don't think it's a children's movie. But, for adults, if you are mature enough to not be influenced by the bad things, I think it's a movie you'll be able to enjoy again and again.

Great movie, can't wait for Part 2!

    by

I love what Peter Jackson and his crew have done with this movie! It really is as accurate and true to the book as it could be, given the time restraints on a movie. Perfectly cast as well! I heard a few complaints from some other movie-goers about it ending in the middle, but I knew it was going to be like that. The 3D version is definitely the way to go, and this coming from someone not usually thrilled about 3D.

    The Hobbitt: An Unexpected Journey

Very disappointing. Very spectacular. Fabulous use of technology to produce wonderful images. However it has virtually no story line. Simply moves from one action scene to another for nearly three hours and then it ends leaving the viewer no where.

The Hobbit is Great for what it is.

Loved the movie and it felt just like when I first saw the The Fellowship. It is great in 3D and It is better to see it in this format, especially in the IMAX theater. I hate when I hear some reviewers say, "It's not like the Lord of The Rings trilogy". First off, it's not the same journey and also, it's only the first of three so how can you compare it to the trilogy as a whole. It is not going to be an epic journey like the Lord of the Rings. It's more of a personal journey. Some folks just get under my skin.

    Mind & Money

    by

Apparently Jackson's backers or talent ran out with this last installment. The first hour was quaint, the second dangerously dull with dialogue and the last 50 minutes picked up, but it was too late, the let down had already set in. Watching the Lord of the Rings afterward really brought this to the forefront. NO COMPARISON in sets, costumes, actors, special effects and script. This movie was CHEAPLY invested in mind and money.

It a pity when so much mass mayhem is simply boring

So disappointed in the amount of computerized mayhem (and blurry mayham at that) and so little character and plot development. As far as computerized special effects go, just because you CAN do it doesn't mean you SHOULD do it.

Real 3D Makes the Difference in the Experience!

Loved watching this movie. The graphics were awesome in the Real3D! That will be a required format for any sequels that we may be given an opportunity to go see! If they make any... we will be there! It was such a wonderful pleasure to see Ian McKellen (Gandolf) again, as always!

Not sure that the Hobbit deserves the full-on Jackson production

    by

While it has been many years since I first read the Hobbit, which led me to read all of Tolkien's other books, I can't remember so much action taking place so rapidly as in this, the first installment of what is promised to be a 12-15 hour series of movies based on this relatively short pre-quel to the Lord of the Rings.

    meh

    by

Special effects do not a great movie make. The whole book could have been put into a three-hour movie. It was slow. You kept waiting for something to happen. Too many unreal fight scenes with a couple people slaying hundreds of goblins and never getting hurt while falling hundreds of feet. It was beautiful with great actors but not a great movie.

    Great graphics and special effects

I was an avid reader of the trilogy: Lord of the Rings which includes the Hobbit. It is tough to capture the mystical and magical qualities of the book. I think the movie does a wonderful job of this. I wish the story line was equally balanced...I didn't think it was as clear...kind of like writing the script for a movie where the main attraction is the visual and not so much the story.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

A must see; if for no other reason than to see a well done live action 3D. Most other films done with live characters and 3D are not as good as this one.
The plot stays pretty close to the book and the embelishments for the movie didn't distract from the book's plot.
If someone can't stand lots of action than they should pass on this movie. There is enough dialogue and plot development to ensure that one didn't need to read the book to know what was happening.
    M.V.

The 3D was just fine, don't let all the news hype put you off of going. But again, it really does not add a whole lot to the film, so it's not really a big deal. Expect a bunch of stuff that was not in the book, but does fill in the backstory, and I guess gives some of the big starts their bright shiny paychecks. In all, a very good movie, can't wait until part 2 next year.

    The Hobbit

VERY DISAPPOINTED. Way too long, boring. Beautiful graphics, LOUD battles. As with the "Rings," if you didn't know the books you were lost. My husband says "no way" to the next two. Guess I'll wait for TV. Alas.

    A children's story

    by

The hobbit was awesome! For someone who grow up with the hobbit, you would know that it is a children's story. Peter Jackson did an awesome job capturing the story and keeping it for both children and adults a like. The beginning had a lot of dialogue but that is expected being the first book in the series. If you have children wanting to watch it I recommend eight and above. There are scenes with heads and legs chopped off and death. But there was no blood and gore. The story teaches good lessons of bravery and good vs evil. The hobbit is a wonderful story that started English mythology. I recommend this movie to all sci-fi fans. I hope you enjoy one of the greatest stories ever told. I give it a 4 out of a five stars. I expect a better rating for the sexual since the best part are yet to come.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

While Peter Jackson did not follow the book to the "T", He still mad eit on heck of an adventure. I found it very interesting and entertaining. If you are a fan of good adventures, you will loveit. If you are a fan of Tolkien, you should go, but know that it has some changes from the original book. I don't know what else you could expect when they make three movies out of a book that was not even as thick as any one book of the Lord of the Rings. If you know that going in...You will enjoy and come out smiling!
