    The Hobbit

    by dleemer

A family classic. I loved it. It followed the book closely; the characters where well portrayed; the 3D was great. I can hardly wait for the rest of the story.

Fits right in with the original Lord of the RIngs

    by

The Hobbit is a bit sillier and more whimsical than The Lord of the Rings, but that is not really a bad thing. The entire story is presented as if Bilbo himself is telling it, much like he did at his birthday party in The Fellowship of the Ring. Due to this, things are stretched and exaggerated a bit more than in LOTR. This is probably the reasoning behind the vast majority of the creatures being computer graphics rather than people in suits as in the original series. The references to the originals, or should I say the original series' references to this are plenty, and much of the fun is seeing the events and locations that tie the two trilogies together. It is true that this entry does not have the emotional gravitas of Fellowship, but again that is a product of Bilbo telling the story from his memory rather than going through the events firsthand with the characters from the original series. I greatly enjoyed this movie and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed LOTR.

There and Not Yet Back Again

After the confusing mayhem of the LOTR movies, director Peter Jackson chose an elegiac pace to stretch one Hobbit book into three movies. Eeellleeegggiiiaaaccc, which means slow but with pretty scenery.

Many times, I thought I did not remember scene; of course, I hadn't come across them any of the three times I read the book. A unexpected treat was casting three metrosexual nobbos against type as trolls. A sage choice indeed.

    An Unexpected Review

    by

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was the best movie I have seen this year. The 3D version is a must see. The 3D resolution was even better than Avatar. I was satisfied with the length of the movie as well. I like that Peter Jackson is not afraid to run his movie longer than 2 hours. Most critics gave this movie negative reviews because of it's length. I found the length, perfect, I wish more movies would run longer and tell more of a story, rather than rush scenes. I was also impressed once again by the sound track. Looking forward to seeing The Hobbit again in IMAX 3D.

The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey

    by Paavec

Definitely see it in 3D on the big screen. Of course, it's a movie adaptation, and not going to follow exactly with the book, but still, a well-done adaptation. Peter has great vision in trying to stay as close as he can to Tolkein's imagination. PG13 I guess is for the fighting and violence, otherwise not too bad.

    Fantastic

    by exrabe

I enjoyed LoTR, but The Hobbit is a lot truer to the original vision. All the important bits are there, plus some key history that connects in the backgrounds of the dwarfs. Nice mix of humor also.

Perhaps a little long for someone who hasn't read the books multiple times.

    Five Stars

Excellent movie. I've been waiting for them to make this movie since I first read the book years ago. I wasn't disappointed. I can't wait for the sequel!

i'm an LOTR purist. I thought I wouldn't like The Hobbit. But actually it's great -- for purists -- b/c it brings the world to life in a more richly realized way. i can't wait for the 2nd movie. and yes, some of the fight scenes feature tricks you've seen before in the first 3 movies (like getting rescued by a giant eagle at the moment of peril) but if you like this stuff you'll love getting more of the same.

    The Hobbit

    by

"The Hobbit" is a fun entertainment, not the epic sweep of the LOTR movies, at least not in "An Unexpected Journey", we'll have to see how epic the other movies in the series go. But it's definitely worth seeing, especially if you're a Tolkien fan. There is a lot of stuff that's not in the book which was added from unpublished Tolkien material and from the appendices at the backs of the books. They also made Thorin into a jerk, which I hope will change in the next two movies.

As usual, the New Zealand settings and the cinematography are breathtaking.

Little kids would probably be frightened by the Orcs, the Trolls, and the Goblins, but older kids will enjoy it, though it is about 2 1/2 hours long. But from my point of view, it didn't feel that long.

I give "The Hobbit" 8.5 out of 10 stars.

I didn't read the books but...

    by

I thought the movie was amazing. I loved how they incorporated characters that you already knew from LOTR into this story. To me, it seemed a little to heavy on the CGI, but still, was definitely worth it!

    Very Boring

This movie was nothing different than the last 3 of the trilogy. And just like the last 3, you had to sit through 3 hours of predictable lord of the rings movie jargon. I was really hopeing for something new and exciting, but no....same as before. Sorry Peter Jackson....I was not impressed. Actually, I could hardly wait for the movie credits before my wife and I fell asleep, or left the theater.

The Hobbit: An Unexpectd Journey 3D

    by

The 3D effects were great! The move follows the book very well. The cast did a remarkable job playing the characters and pulled you into the move. Even though the movie is a long movie almost three hours long, the time seems to fly by. I am looking forward to the next release. Gandolf is exceptional. You feel as if you are part of the adventure party as you watch the movie. I really recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys a good action/adventure movie.

Over all, it is a good film, just not amazing

    by

Unfortunately, the acting at times seems disjointed and lack luster. The first hour of the film is filled with slow plodding story lines, and acting that seems a little phoned in. With very little variety between characters, it is hard to find a reason to care about or to connect to most of them, much less figure out who they are. The film also seems to develop a nasty habit of wandering so far away from the source material, you are often left wondering if it is even the same story. If you are a purist, be prepared to be disappointed.

    A Thin Gruel

With so many tired old cliches and borrowed scenes, this move became a dull bore after the 1st Orc fight scene. The following flood of many more fight and chase scenes made me groan in disgust. If you're looking for anything more interesting than fleeing from and slaying some Orc's, this ain't gonna deliver for you.
