    The Hobbitt: An Unexpected Journey

Very disappointing. Very spectacular. Fabulous use of technology to produce wonderful images. However it has virtually no story line. Simply moves from one action scene to another for nearly three hours and then it ends leaving the viewer no where.

    Nearly perfect.

    by

The Hobbit is absolutely fantastic. Everything I have wanted since I first learned about Peter Jackson adapting the Lord of the Rings to film. I often found myself smiling in the theater and filled with the same wonder as I was those many years ago; when I first read The Hobbit.

    Go but Save some Dough

Great movie, very entertaining. I remember the original book from my childhood. The only thing that was a little disappointing was the 3D. It would seem if you were going to see a movie in 3D, you would expect a few more things coming out of the screen at you; especially in an action movie such as this. The only things that came out of the screen were a few embers, a butterfly and a couple of birds; tsk, tsk. I saw the Life of Pi in 3D and was completely captivated. Now THAT was 3D!! My advice is go and you'll truly enjoy the movie but don't waste your extra dineros on 3D. You'll be just as happy and be able to buy that extra large popcorn!!

Took my 9 year old son -

He hadn't read the book yet, sad. But, we sat down at the theater, popcorn and sodas at the ready, the film started and about 5 minutes into it he is asking if we have to stay, "this is boring". Of course I said yes we have to stay!. Ha! Soon the the action started and he was hooked! He sat engrossed on the film until the end.

Very well done. Bilbo's Trolls are fantastic!

    Totally Awesome!

    by Neo314

This movies is a true masterpiece, and I am confident the next two installments will be just as good. If you have the patience to wait until they are all released, and you have a huge TV with 3D and a high end sound system, then by all means wait. I couldn't.

    3D and 48 fps

Regarding the new tech, the 48 fps was noticeable at first in that it was a little distracting, but the eyes and brain soon were used to it and it simply looked and moved great. There weren't many moments when 3D stuck out. Jackson didn't us it for many gags, but rather to enhance the realism of the experience. Subtly done really. Worth the extra money to see the movie as he intended.

The story largely tracks the book, with some additional stuff from the LOTR appendices. For the non-fan, the movie will likely be a long slog of storytelling, however cool the fights scenes and well written the dialogue. For the fan, it may not be long enough. It satisfies the craving for a Tolkien fix and then some. Dividing one book, albeit with additional material from elsewhere in the Tolkien canon, into three parts was always going to feel artificial to a degree. But as a first of three it works well.

Non-fans should go to see the new tech and a good movie. Fans can't miss it.

    THE HOBBIT 3D

I was disappointed. I paid for 3D effects and it was far from the level I am used to (I saw Avatar 3D and Alice in Wonderland 3D which we AWESOME). I though the movie was SLOW moving and if you had not seen the Lord of the Rings, it makes no sense. I really would have appreciated an understanding of the movie, via plot and story line. To assume that "everyone" going to see it, will understand or would have seen the original Hobbit is a huge assumption. This movie could have had the potential to "hook" new viewers but, instead it pushes those who dont know a thing, away.

    1 star -

    Engrossing story!!

Our opinions of this movie were on the mixed side but both a solid feeling of: "glad we went". Man-thought it was great, solid story line, lots of action. Woman-great story, beautiful fantasy, but WAY too much fighting; wouldn't take a child under 11 yrs old for the gore, overwhelming stress & scary beings created. But BOTH of us couldn't believe it had been almost 3 hrs when the credits came on!! Can't wait for next one!!

    Very Disappointing

Most of the reviews that I have seen for this movie criticize it because Peter Jackson took a relatively short book and embellished it into a trilogy. Those criticisms have not gone far enough IMO. Many of the battle scenes seem to be no different than what we saw in the Lord of the Rings, and what was new and refreshing in LOTR now seems cliched. Much of the music was carried over as well. There are also plot changes that I do not like and do not move the story forward. Bilbo is entirely out of character with his personality in the book. The length of the movie, instead of adding clarity to the plot, simply makes the movie boring. The dwarves do not look like dwarves and their makeup has them looking like characters bad horror films Last, I am not a fan of current 3D technology. I find it distracting to the movie itself. None of this is the fault of the actors, but there are too many obstacles for them to overcome.

    The Hobbit

My wife and I watched this movie in 3D and the special effects were awesome. If you enjoyed the Lord of the Rings trilogy, you'll enjoy this movie just as much. If there was a negative to this movie it's the ending, which isn't what you expect.

Hobbit Unexpected Journey is More Than Expected

    by Chican2

And, I expected a lot. Caveat: I'm a huge fan of the original movie trilogy so somewhat biased, but Hobbit over-delivered for me. My only issue is that I have to wait for the next two.

    yes!

i'm an LOTR purist. I thought I wouldn't like The Hobbit. But actually it's great -- for purists -- b/c it brings the world to life in a more richly realized way. i can't wait for the 2nd movie. and yes, some of the fight scenes feature tricks you've seen before in the first 3 movies (like getting rescued by a giant eagle at the moment of peril) but if you like this stuff you'll love getting more of the same.

    The truth about the movie

    by

I'm into this type of movies, so I got all excited to go see it!!! Well... When I walked out of the theater I wish there had been a camera there waiting for my reaction. It was bad. The only thing I liked were the characters and the special effects on them, but that's all this was! There is nothing more to this movie. My wife and I were so incredibly disappointed that we couldn't believe it. You know when you're dancing a great song and the DJ cuts that song? That's this movie. Movie structure: 1.Setup, 2.Conflict, 3.Resolution (well... there's no resolution. The setup was WaaaaY too long. Then... Why didn't the hobbit use the ring when he was in the trees to help in the fight? That was stupid! A mystery door mentioned in the whole movie wasn't even in the movie!!! The riddles conversation took for ever!!! way too long that scene. So disappointing this movie. You can wait until it's out on TV.

    The Hobbit

It was BEAUTIFUL. 3D was great, A bit too long but I did really enjoy it. I would absolutely recommend it even if you haven't seen any of the other ones. This one starts at the beginning before the other movies play a part in the story. Fun movie for the entire family.
