The Hobbit

The film is for the most part, excellent. However, it would not hurt at all if you read the book before you go. Otherwise, it could be somewhat bewildering. The portrayal of each dwarf is superb. Peter Jackson has nailed it again. He's the undisputed go-to guy for all things Hobbit and all things LOTR.

The Hobbit 3D

I think as an original Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Trilogy fan with books and movie I would have preferred to watch not in 3D. However new movie version was great. Gandolf certainly has a lot more energy 60 years prior to Lord of the Rings than in those movies. I enjoyed seeing the original actors return for this movie. Gollum scenes were great. Only negative was the comedic licence the Director took with one liners throughout the movie which for true Lord of the Rings fans I found distracting and stupid and not in character with the story/like the line Gandolf says that the cutting off of the head of ? and lobbying it into the air was the origin of golf. Looking forward however to the sequel. M.

Begin the journey!

Peter Jackson has done it again! I wasn't sure what to expect, and honestly, the confused reviews from people had me lowering expectations. Wow, did the film come through! I was enthralled from the start just as I was 10 years ago. The vivid scenery, compelling story monologues, dynamic characters, and fast pace kept me glued to my seat. Freeman portrays Bilbo just as Tolkien did, and McKellen brings back the old Gandalf with new insight into the character. The dwarves add so much color to the plot with their varied personalities and stories. Memorable scenes from the book are given new life without anything being taken away. See it alone or with friends, but see it!

Wonderful!!! Simply wonderful!

For a LOTR fan, this scratches a very deep itch. It delivers all of the visual spectacle that I have come to love from this franchise, as well as a powerful and heartfelt story. For a movie running 169 minutes, the time flew by as I was sucked into a world in which I wanted to spend more time. The 3D experience was fantastic, as it allowed me to feel part of the story and especially enjoyable to have the experience of being able to virtually wander the Bilbo's Hobbit hole.

It Was Long and Boring

First of all, I need to say I haven't read any of the books, but I did like LOTR! There was a lot of character development in that one and hence you cared about the characters. I did love Bilbo and thought Martin Freeman was excellent. The best part was he and Gollum and the riddles. I will say that most of the people I was with, including 11 & 14 yr olds liked it. One comment was that Bilbo was too brave at first. He needed to make that part more subtle. I thought the battle scenes were so over the top and boring, that I had to walk out for awhile. I felt a tad dizzy at times as well and I had heard that he filmed it in fast time and maybe that was the reason.

A Movie for fans that don't want it to end

The Hobbit is a movie for fans that don't want it to end. Overall it is a visually stunning and entertaining film. The acting is surprisingly fantastic (no more Orlando Bloom helps). I was engaged the entire time, though a lot of moments are dragged out to excess. This comes with the large and fundamental flaw in this film: Don't make a roughly 360 page book into three, three hour movies. I understand the need to make it a drawn-out, vast adventure flick but a 25 minute troll scene is far from what the story arc needs. See it and enjoy it but it is far from what the LOTR trilogy was able to deliver.

An Entertaining Jaunt, With the Top Down

THE HOBBIT: AUJ is a playful adaptation with a slightly different vibe. This film is light-on-its-feet, more keen to savor a moment than to rush. On Dec 5th I tweeted: "LOTR Trilogy=an intense week-long cross country trip, but Hobbit=a more leisurely Sunday drive, with the top down." Tolkien's original was a slight children's novel that goes from quaint to epic while never losing its élan. This film feels lighter. You're definitely still in the gorgeous, familiar arms of Tolkien's Middle-earth, as envisioned by Jackson. The cast is universally EXCELLENT! The design & effects team at WETA have again given us a miracle. Erebor is nuts, I loved it! Just give Andrew Lesnie the Oscar for his stunning camerawork. Admittedly the ending leaves us wondering where the 3rd Act might be. Next year's THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG is on my mind! You know the old adage in Hollywood: "Always leave 'em wanting more."

Must see

Amazing. I wish more members of the actual White Council had been shown, but everything else was brilliant. Erebor and Rivendell were 500% better than anything I'd ever imagined and everything was mindblowingly good. I did see it in 48fps and 3d though and I don't think it was necessary.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey HO-HUM

I enjoyed reading the books in the early 70'S but I did not enjoy this movie. It was long and seemed uninteresting to me. Halfway through I was wanting to leave.After the movie was over I had wished that I would have went to see either Lincoln or Django Unchained.Maybe if I was a bit younger I would have liked it more.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was the best movie I have seen this year. The 3D version is a must see. The 3D resolution was even better than Avatar. I was satisfied with the length of the movie as well. I like that Peter Jackson is not afraid to run his movie longer than 2 hours. Most critics gave this movie negative reviews because of it's length. I found the length, perfect, I wish more movies would run longer and tell more of a story, rather than rush scenes. I was also impressed once again by the sound track. Looking forward to seeing The Hobbit again in IMAX 3D.

We likes it! We likes it forever!

Hobbit was fantastic. A little lighter and more humorous than LOTR, just as the book was. Connected enough to LOTR that you knew it was the same world, but totally its own film. The Tolkien purist in me has a couple nitpicks, but overall a beautiful film. Stunning visually. Will see it again, and can't wait for the next. Three hours... skip the soda...

Not for Fans of the Book

The movie was long and slower than it needed to be. In order to get to 3 hours and 3 movies a lot was added that is not in the book. Some of the changes were needed to suit the format of the movie, but many were just Hollywood add ons to attempt to add flair. Had I not been a fan of the book, I probably would have liked it more. As a Tolkien fan, I was disappointed.

Too Long but still a Must See

The movie had too many side tracks that really had little to do with the story, but still had enough action and good acting to make it worth the sitting to watch. The special effects were very good and the acting was very solid. Too bad the director couldn't resist the temptation to appease all the Tolkein geeks.

Great Holiday movie for the whole family

Adventure, excitement, and the bonds formed by bringing unlikely union of characters together. Once again we are reminded that you cannot judge a book by its cover and that sometimes the most transformative events in our lives are the unexpected ones.
