Great film. If you like the book, you'll love the movie.

Before you read my review try to remember that you are going to the movies. If you are going to analyze and critisize the film, there is always going to be something negative to say.
The expanded frame rate didn't seem visible to me and the 3D was great for the most part. There were times when the 3D effects moved quickly and we experienced a little blur, but all in all it was great.
The storyline was true, in most part to the book and the acting and characters were spot on. The cinematics were amaxing as expected and the 3D added to this. I liked the orcs from the first series of films a bit better and it seems strange that they would change them, but it didn't hurt the film.
If you like the book, you should love this film. I think it could be seen with or without the 3d and the same effect would be recieved. Thanks again Jackson, for taking us on a brief tour of Middle Earth.

    The Hobbit

Very good movie. We know what to expect and it delivers. Maybe a bit long but enjoyable and worth seeing. If you liked Lord of the Rings then you will like this.

    The Hobbit in 3D

For die-hard fans of Lord of the Ring I would probably rate it "Go", as for me, I was disappointed, especially with the 3D version. It is not worth an additional $4 per ticket since there was not much of a 3D effect. There were plenty of scenes where it could have been spectacular, but for some reason it did not come out that way. Also, the movie is telling only half of the story (presumably, the other half is in the making?...) and is really unnecessary long with lots of boring moments that could have been easily cut off.

    Good Movie

I really liked that it stayed true to the theme of LOTR and it was a good movie. My only complaint was that there were really no good-looking leading men like Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom as in the original LOTR trilogy to hold my interest. It also was slow to get moving, but I think that the second movie will be much better now that the group is well on their quest and the action is beginning.

Suspension of disbelief is one thing: This is just STUPID in a non-Tolkien way

Why does Peter Jackson feel compelled to "out-do" Tolkien?
Suspension of disbelief is one thing, but when every scene is SO crazy out-of-control, video-gamed out that Mission Impossible looks like a Matlock episode, then something is wrong.
Tolkien creates a fantasy world & things operate within that world in a "believable" way. But Jackson pushes everything WAAAY beyond the limit of even "fantasy belief" to the point where you're just constantly rolling your eyes. Like riding the knees of the Rock Giants. Or plummeting 3,000 feet on a rickety plank bridge that somehow remains perfectly level so nobody falls off. Or leaping tree-to-tree as they topple over like dominoes.
None of this happens in the Tolkien, and adds nothing to the story. It just makes you feel like screaming "ENOUGH already! Yes, we GET that you have CGI so anyone can do ANYthing. But just show some self-control!"

Also: 48fps is SO clear that it backfires & makes everything look even faker than in normal film!

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D

I laughed more than I cried. Stunning graphics and non stop thrill. Plot was a little drawn out at times but if you focused to get the point you understood why they lingered in that part of the story. It was back to action before I became too bored with the plot. For a few split seconds they failed to keep the size of the characters in true perspective but that is to be expected when you mingle dwarfs, hobbits, giants, elves and normal sized people in a normal sized world. They did a good job making everything appear to be proportionate. It is not a children's movie..13 and over is best in my opinion. I can't wait to see the next one...no need to wait through the credits there is no sneak preview.

Beautiful but a bit of a drag

    by

The film was good, but seemed like the 3 hours that it was. The previous movies suspended time for me, but I was aware of every second. Never really got lost in the story. Still, if you're a fan, you'll have to see it. Let's hope the next installments bring back the magic.

Best adaptation of The Hobbit ever

The movie was totally worth the price and lack of sleep for the midnight premiere. It was extremely faithful to the book, adding new dimension to Tolkien's marvelous story-telling. The combination of special effects, computer animation and acting was seamless and believable. The characters were well-developed with lots of back-story to give depth to their role. The riddle scene in Gollum's cave was perfect!

Many have lamented the length of 3 hours. I didn't want it to end! I'm ready to see it again, to read the original book again, to see the next installment. Marvelous job, Peter Jackson! Marvelous job!

    The Hobbit

    by jadsax

I read some pretty scathing reviews about this movie, but it was actually pretty good. I read the book several times when I was a kid, and I think Peter Jackson did a pretty good job of telling the story and including the relevant information and the cinematography was breathtaking. It was nice to see some of the characters from the trilogy making appearances as well. It does seem to drag on a bit, especially when you lump in the seemingly endless commercials and previews, as well as the credits at the end which my wife, who works in the film industry, dutifully makes me watch every time. As far as the actual look of the film, I think its almost too processed. There's obviously a lot of CG, but there's a lot of live actors too, and I think the live actors blend into the CG rather than the other way around. The 3D was cool, though not integral. A nice way to spend an evening, but definitely not for little kids. Its very violent.

    In 3D Must Go

With an intermission I could have watched another 3 hours for the second part. That's my only real complaint. I wish Peter Jackson had just made it one big epic movie. Loved the characters, the scenery and cinematography. In 3D, it was riveting. A must see for Lord of the Rings fans.

Theatre Complaint: Mobile Ticket did not work even with new Fandango scanning device. Theatre staff handled quickly and pleasantly with confirmation number.

    Simply beautiful.

This movie is action packed and fun from the first moments. It fits seamlessly into the Lord of the Rings trilogy and is full of amazing scenery, killer monsters, exciting characters and, of course, beautiful music that made my heart skip a beat. Well played Mr. Jackson, well played.

    AN ADVENTURE FOR ONCE!

Although this movie was three hours long I enjoyed it very much. The quality, and movie graphics are amazing. I fell asleep watching Twilight because it lacked the stimulation that I need. This movie makes me want a Hobbit very badly.

Don't Listen to Critics Who Say It's Too Long!!

    by

Saw it at midnight - brought my nephew and 72 year old mother who was not really a Fantasy/SciFi person until we first dragged her to the Lord of the Rings movies when they came out. We were never bored, and learned a lot about the goings-on in Middle Earth.

Pay no attention to critics - they are evaluating this as a *movie* instead of as an *adventure*.

Even so, I had no problem with the character development, storyline, etc. Jackson and his team are again doing a fantastic job bringing everything to life.

If you don't like long movies and aren't into Fantasy, don't go see it. If you like adventures and don't mind being on one for 3 hours, then go and enjoy yourself!

    Really good!

I was a bit worried after reading a lot of bad reviews, but I really enjoyed the movie. The 3D visuals were amazing. Even though the movie was long, I never checked my watch. It was captivating. The acting was wonderful and the visual effects took my breath away at moment. A couple of chase scenes had me on the edge of my seat. I am looking forward to the next one!

    The Hobbit

It was wonderful...We saw it in 3D which I highly recommend. They are breaking the book into 3 installments. I was wondering if I would leave unsatisfied but that was not the case. The acting, the cinemetography...Gollum was amazing! Can't wait for the next installment
