The Hobbit - needs to be a shorter movie

They had an opportunity to make a really good movie and instead they put in obvious time-fillers in order to stretch this movie out into 3 parts. The fight scenes seemed to last forever. I don't feel the 3-D added to the experience either. That being said, it wasn't a bad movie. It just wasn't a great one.

InCREDible in 48fps! Will Go Back To See It In IMAX

Have no idea why anyone is saying the movie drags at places. Maybe they just aren't into or don't understand the LOTR series but this was incredible on par+in certain ways better than the trilogy which are my favorite movies ever.

The 48 frames per second takes a little getting used to, but after the first scene where it just comes off as really different and maybe seems like it's moving quickly, you get used to it by then. Once you do adjust to it it seems almost like you are stepping into another dimension of reality, where the incredible detail and lush colors along w 3d makes it seem like another world. It was breathtaking!

I usually don't care for 3d as it in every case at least that I have seen it, it has either was the sucky upconverted kind, was distracting, not consistent, not well thought out or was dizzying, for the Hobbit it was VERY well done, consistent+very well done. They corrected the Hobbits size scale+CGI was seamless+AWESOME! Can't wait to see it in IMAX!

    The Hobbit

Really great! Sweeping rotoscope photography. Absolutely impeccable detail in Gollahms face!
A little slow at times and sometimes the goofiness of the dwarfs was distracting, like I was watching Disney characters, but overall just exactly what you'd expect as a pre-cursor to the LOTR Trilogy.

    Hobbit

I saw the Hobbit in 3D. I loved it. I thought it followed the booked very closely. I even recognized lines from the book, which I am now rereading.

The 3D and special effects enhanced the story. They were not used as gimmicks.

I am very tempted to see it again, but may wait a week or so before I do.

Too Much "Story" but a Good Movie

    by

In my opinion, they made too much of a story out of this movie - spent too much time building the story line of the characters. They could have chopped it down and introduced some more action, but the action they did have was stellar and the new characters drew me in. Definitely go and see - this is Peter Jackson's calling; to produce these films.

    Worth the wait

    by Marnus

I went to the midnight showing-the first one i ever went to-and it was amazing! The cinematography was just incredible, especially in 3d. I dont think i blinked for 3 hrs because i was afraid i would miss something lol. Often times , if a movie is good, it will stay true to the original book or story-Peter Jacksons movie went beyond this and not only stayed true to the book, but truly brought the book to life. Can't wait to see the second part:)

    Awesome

    by nick962

Truly a fantastic film. A bit slow at the beginning, but it soon picks up and gains interest. Much similar to the Fellowship of the Ring in terms of story driven and amount of filmed combat. Looked amazing in Real 3-D. Heavy backstory. Kept true to most of the book with additions from outside it. Worth seeing again.

A Must see for Tolkien Fans

The movie was excellent. However, it took awhile to get to the action. If you can get through the first half hour to fourty minutes of set up, you will love it.

    Fantastic

    by exrabe

I enjoyed LoTR, but The Hobbit is a lot truer to the original vision. All the important bits are there, plus some key history that connects in the backgrounds of the dwarfs. Nice mix of humor also.

Perhaps a little long for someone who hasn't read the books multiple times.

a Tale of Two Opinions (both mine)

Some say the Hobbit was true to the book... Really? I know I'm getting old and it's been many years since I've read it, but I was thinking - during the movie - that I wasn't recognising the story. Generally, yes. Perhaps it was other variations on the theme that threw me off. Aside from that, we LOVED IT!! That is, my wife really loved it and I really liked it... or should that be 'just loved it'?

Too long? No, not reallly. Felt more like a standard two-hour movie to me, which has to say something positive about the story and pacing.

3D? for me, the jury's still out. Sure the glasses have become better quality, but they still leave a lot to be desired to eliminate all distraction and make it a more organic experience. I may need to see both 3D and regular back-to-back to be able to tell.

    The Hobbit

Peter Jackson cast his magic spell again. Another great epic of middle earth with appearances from many of the original cast as well as many new characters make their mark. Not to be missed. Ignore the less than stellar reviews from the critics.

    Visually Impressive

The story must necessarily be cut and compressed - one should see this for the new technology which (while not "life changing") IS impressive (I saw the "double-speed-3D).

    Good, not great

It looked like an LOTR movie -- great effects, great music, etc. But it had a rote, by-the-numbers feel to it -- for me, it was missing the labor-of-love atmosphere that the LOTR movies had.

And my son hated the "to be continued" ending. Welcome to the way I felt at the end of The Empire Strikes Back, kid. At least you don't have to wait three years.

    Excellent

Gets off track from the book, but that is understandable because of what is being accomplished. There are several changes from the actual book as well, such as at the end wehn the dwarves and Bilbo are fighting the orcs. Also, the term ORC is never used in The Hobbit, only "goblin" is used. Mostly points that if you have not read the books you would never know. But overall a great movie that I thoriughly enjoyed.
