Tolkien paired with Jackson still a proven combination

I admit I was a bit worried hearing that the Hobbit was going to spawn three nearly 3 hour movies. I was pleasantly surprised that instead of feeling stretched, it felt natural and the time passed before I knew it. The visuals, as always, were spot on and the 3D helped immerse without feeling gimmicky. I loved how it started, tying in nicely with the start of the Fellowship of the Rings. I highly recommend.

Must see!!! Love the way they blended the first movie ( fellowship of the ring ) in! I think it made the Hobbit part of the other 3 and not left it out there on its own! Loved it! Will see it again!!!!!!!

    The Hobbit

Very good movie. We know what to expect and it delivers. Maybe a bit long but enjoyable and worth seeing. If you liked Lord of the Rings then you will like this.

    Better than Expected

    by Jemby2

Like many others, I worried about making it in three movies, but enjoyed this first one. Too many long battle scenes, too much falling down, down, down (come on and LAND already!); but the casting was excellent and scenes in Hobbiton and Rivendell felt like old home week. It's been 12 years since LOTR, but Gandalf, Elrond, and Galadriel all look YOUNGER than they did then. The 12 dwarves each get a chance so there is some good character development, and several iconic moments that played out very well.

Martin Freeman (Bilbo) and Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield) do a great job - Thorin as Hero and Bilbo as Anti-Hero; they come to admire and respect one another as they work thru the adventure. I thought the dwarves' impromptu dinner party was funny, and probably fun for the actors. The bad guys were scary, but not too scary for younger kids. I loved Radagast as the ditzy Nature Boy wizard. The Riddle Game with Gollum was excellent; look forward to meeting Smaug!

This movie has good parts, but drags

    by Tim1965

This movie is not very faithful to the book, but generally it's pretty good. The battle scenes are waaaay over the top and the orcs don't look very orcish. Martin Freeman as Bilbo and Richard Armitage as Thorin are superb. Ken Stott as the aged Balin looks buffonish in makeup, but has a superb scene that really changes things. I saw the high frame-rate and it was not as bad as people say. I barely noticed anything. The production and CGI, as always are top-notch. The music was mostly a rehash of LOTR's score.

    The Hobbit

    by HOM

If you liked The Lord of the Rings series, then you will like this movie. Instead of Froto's adventure, it is Bilbo Baggins turn. All of this takes place before Froto was even in the picture. A must see in 3D. The animals and the characters just come to life in 3D. I give this movie two thumbs up.

    An Expected Wonderful Journey

I must say, I very thoroughly enjoyed this movie! The chemistry between actors was immense, lots of beautiful cinematography, just enough action to keep it moving, and quite a few good laughs as well. You will never find a moment of unintended awkward moments between characters, or non-purposeful dialogue. Every word is thought out, has meaning and is a pleasure to listen to. In fact, there are a few scenes where your heart will be filled with joy and you'll want to clap.

In short, if you're the slightest Lord of the Rings fan, go see it. Even if you're not a fan, go see it. You won't regret it.

    Another long walk

    by

As with most of Peter Jackson's work, this one is beautifully shot and edited. I think if I hadn't seen all of the Lord of The Rings films, I would have been blown away by The Hobbit. Unfortunately, it was really just another long walk and seemed a bit slow to develop only to resolve with "To Be Continued".

    The truth about the movie

    by

I'm into this type of movies, so I got all excited to go see it!!! Well... When I walked out of the theater I wish there had been a camera there waiting for my reaction. It was bad. The only thing I liked were the characters and the special effects on them, but that's all this was! There is nothing more to this movie. My wife and I were so incredibly disappointed that we couldn't believe it. You know when you're dancing a great song and the DJ cuts that song? That's this movie. Movie structure: 1.Setup, 2.Conflict, 3.Resolution (well... there's no resolution. The setup was WaaaaY too long. Then... Why didn't the hobbit use the ring when he was in the trees to help in the fight? That was stupid! A mystery door mentioned in the whole movie wasn't even in the movie!!! The riddles conversation took for ever!!! way too long that scene. So disappointing this movie. You can wait until it's out on TV.

    Surprisingly Awesome

I was really impressed with the whole movie.
Saw it in 3D and it was cool...

There was some great action - and I was really impressed with the whole tie into things.
The character developement was really well done.

Gollam was really well done. I am always amazed at how his whole character is done.

I enjoyed watching Bilbo come out of his shell.

Definately worth seeing... Seeing it on the big screen was awesome.

    What were the critics thinking???

I simply don't get the negative reviews for this movie. Are the critics so steeped in their self-important hubris that they can't see the value in a new and provocative technology? These tired old critics remind me of book critics lamenting the loss of the "paper book in my hands." I'm sorry, I'm a published author, and paper books are dead. Get over it.

And the same applies here. Yes, the Hobbit in HFR 3D is jarring at first, and there's a bit more gratuitous 3D stuff than I'd like. (great contrasts between foreground and background to show off the 3D effect) But after 30 minutes or so, your mind adapts, and you find yourself immersed in a fantastical world like none other. And Peter Jackson adapts, forgoing the 3D gratuity and getting back to great story telling and unbelievable scenery. Was the story plodding and too long? NO!! When it ended, I longed for more. Can't wait for the next installment!

If you are a fan of Tolkien go

I enjoyed this movie. The changes in the movie from the book make sense to this point. Tstory moves at a fdun pace. The end was at a good bresak. Any Tolkien or Peter Jackson fan will have a good time.

It's like Star Wars episode I

    by cg_fan

If you read the book, The Hobbit is a wonderfully engaging fairy tale set in Middle Earth, full of adventure, magic, faerie folks, monsters, and epic deeds. The Lord of the Rings is a deep, involved tragedy, also set in Middle Earth, with some of the same characters, taking place after the events told in The Hobbit.

Peter Jackson has recast The Hobbit as a direct prequel of LOTR. He's drawn from his own imagination, and from the various other story sources for Middle Earth like the Appendices of LOTR, and the Silmarillion to flesh out a more suspenseful story line. In short, he changed it.

This has the effect of making the LOTR movies like Episodes 4, 5, and 6 of Star Wars, and now this movie is Episode 1. Complete with Jar Jar Binks, aka Radagast the Brown. Radagast is a bumbling fool with a birds nest under his hat and the associated bird pooh dribbling down his face, driving a sled pulled by talking rabbits. It's Stupid.

Overall, fun movie, but it's NOT The Hobbit I loved.

Excellent movie, but the technical limitations of digital 3D were obvious

Largely true to the book, excellent adaptation. I had some doubts about the decision to make it into 3 movies, given that the 3 volume Lord of the Rings only rated 3 movies itself. But no padding was evident, so I'll not complain.

I would take issues with some of the camera acrobatics, which actually had me suffering from motion sickness at one point, and were utterly gratuitous. Also, I frequently noticed that the picture would blur badly during fast motion sequences. That looked to me like evidence the digital storage just wasn't fast enough to handle the job.

But all in all an excellent movie, I can hardly wait for the next one.

    Didn't Meet Expectations

I guess I had too high of expectations for this movie given the Lord or the Rings trilogy. I felt bored at times and thought the movie was way too long. It lacked the excitement of the others. There was nothing unique or different about this move compared to the LOTR movies. I hope the next ones in this series are better. Of course I'll go see them but, won't have as high expectations next time.
