    The Hobbit - Five STARS

I read The Hobbit over 40 years ago and quickly became a J.R.R.Tolkein fan. I saw the movie last night in 3D; and commented, repeatedly, to my sister about how awesome the film was. The Shire was as I imagined it to be. The characters (Bilbo, Gandalf, the Dwarvs, the Elves) were consistent with the imagery Tolkein presented in his novel. I remember the many violent confrontations from the novel; and the film captured all of it including Orcs & other Middle Earth bad guys. I plan to see The Hobbit again in 3D, of course. This film is not for small children because of the many violent confrontations as the adventure unfolds.

    Hurry up 2013!!!!!

    by

I was a little worried about this movie. Taking in the fact that PJ was taking one book, plus Quest for Erebor story, and giving Radagast an real part in the story. I have to say he has done wonderful so far. I was amazed. My wife and I could not pick our jaws up when we saw Erebor. PJ's vision of it was stunning. Some people have been complaining about how slow the move was in a few places. Sometimes life is just that way, and their is more that come from some of those points later on in the story.

If you haven't seen it yet, let me encourage you to. If you are able either read or listen to the Hobbit book and the Quest for Erebor. Erebor can be found in Unfinished Tales and some of the Lord of The Rings books as appendix A I believe it was called.

Praying for December of 2013 to hurry up.

It's like Star Wars episode I

    by cg_fan

If you read the book, The Hobbit is a wonderfully engaging fairy tale set in Middle Earth, full of adventure, magic, faerie folks, monsters, and epic deeds. The Lord of the Rings is a deep, involved tragedy, also set in Middle Earth, with some of the same characters, taking place after the events told in The Hobbit.

Peter Jackson has recast The Hobbit as a direct prequel of LOTR. He's drawn from his own imagination, and from the various other story sources for Middle Earth like the Appendices of LOTR, and the Silmarillion to flesh out a more suspenseful story line. In short, he changed it.

This has the effect of making the LOTR movies like Episodes 4, 5, and 6 of Star Wars, and now this movie is Episode 1. Complete with Jar Jar Binks, aka Radagast the Brown. Radagast is a bumbling fool with a birds nest under his hat and the associated bird pooh dribbling down his face, driving a sled pulled by talking rabbits. It's Stupid.

Overall, fun movie, but it's NOT The Hobbit I loved.

    The Hobbit

    by clyde10

A very good movie. The beginning was too drawn out, but I guess P. Jackson had to stretch a lot to make 9 hours of movie out of a 400 page book. Gollum was spectacular in his facial expressions and the dwarves were both heroic and refreshingly comical. Overall it left me looking forward to the next films.

    It was okay

It was okay. I was excited to go see it, but left the theater a little bit disappointed. It was long, but not drug out. But something was missing from the original Lord of the Rings. Some of the magic is gone.

    HOBBIT

3D For young boys 7-9. Full of nasties, and visible filthy, slimy, creepy, gooie, disgustingly vulgar. The story was detailed of a time line and interesting; Perhaps not to non-adult. The scenery beautiful and had the person in the middle of canyons, mountains, and gross-ness.
Good movie that I will enjoy seeing over and over with grandkids.

Best 3D movie I have seen, best movie I have EVER seen overall!

This movie blows the rest of the LOTR series out of the water! I may be biased because The Hobbit was my favorite book of the series however, this movie was VERY well done. The 3D was crisp and perfect, the movie was better cast than the others, and even though there were a few minor differences between the movie and the book... it was incredible! My wife went with me and she loved it! We want to go see Rise of the Guardians 3D, but we are unsure if we will go see it or go watch this again!

    How about ending the story

Just like the ones before it this one doesn't end the story arc in a natural place, leaving you feeling incomplete at the end of the film. A bit of judicious editing and some more story and this could have all been done in ONE film! With less of the endless battle scenes!!

    A worthwhile journey

    by jls4707

Just finished seeing the Hobbit -UJ. I really liked it. Usually it is the movie that shorts the book, but in this case it is the movie that expands on the actual content of the book. Side stories and appendixes from the book that flesh out more of the why and when are included and for Tolkien geeks - such as myself - it really makes the Hobbit full of surprises for everyone, even if you have read the book. I truly had a great time - and my advice would be to see the 3D version if you can over the regular type of movie. The effect is like bringing you right into the group with the rest of the heroes.

If I were to offer a slight criticism - the movie is LOOOONG. Small children are going to have a tough time sitting still that long, and honestly myself and most adults will probably have to make at least one bathroom trip. But what makes the movies long are all the additions. Much better when the DVD comes out.

Definitely go see the Hobbit. It is worth the price of a ticket

    The Hobbit

    by femgees

The movie was good but too much fighting with very little plot. It was like hours of going around in circles going nowhere. I even started to fall asleep at one point and was hoping the movie would soon be over. I hope the next one is more entertaining.

More than good, but less than great!

As a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien, I think that the director has found his niche! Having read sometimes poor reviews, when I walked out after the film had run I had wondered if these people had seen the same film. This is the absolute best work that Peter Jackson has done!. The director spends the time to fill in the back ground and sub plots that if you have read the book, and the other books by J.R.R Tolkien you already know. So if you knew nothing about the topic you are drawn into the story. It is very well done!

I wont quibble about the additions to the story line, or the subtractions, in particular Azog being included, and seeing certain other character inclusions that the director portrayed to tie the Hobbit to the other films. Nice touches but not really needed because of the discovery of the one ring.

Over all,..this is a very good film,.....and as the story moves on, because of the ground work laid during this first installment, I can see many heartfelt tears being shed.

    The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

    by ejarch

    Overall, very disappointed.

I cannot believe the team that adapted LOR with such discipline and finesse could produce what appears to be an assemblage of illogical narrative plot lines and edits joined up with repetitive fight scenes.

For example, the change to the three trolls story makes no sense. The change from eating nothing but mutton yesterday, today and tomorrow (even though as the line is classic line is spoken one of the trolls is carrying a fresh pony who would realize that their riders were nearby) is incoherent. Even the strange move of negotiating terms so that all the dwarfs end up in sacks is odd at best. Gandalf's trickery (imitating the trolls' voices) is lost altogether. And what's the deal with discussions about parasites? It is but one example of a solid story line changed for no reason that I can see.

Am I a purist? No. There were many changes in the LOR that were needed and kept the sense of the narrative.

    Hobbit

This movie was outstanding. The sets, costumes, and acting was just awesome. I saw it in 3D and really was not impressed with that part of it. The movie always seemed a little to dark to me anyway. I certainly wasn't ready for it to end when it did.

    Can't wait for Hobbit 2...

I wondered at first why a trilogy was needed. After seeing the movie, I understand and look forward to the other parts. Truly a riveting show and we loved it.
