    Fantastic experience!!

    by

Okay, first off, I've been a dedicated Tolkien fan since I was 13 (a very, very long time ago), so there was no question I was going to love seeing Bilbo come to life on the big screen, just as I loved watching the LOTR movies.

However, despite being 51 years old, I had NEVER before had the IMAX experience, let alone in 3D. Seeing The Hobbit that way was unbelievable! Not only is the movie itself excellent (yet another smashing success for Peter Jackson), but the addition of 3D effects makes it almost indescribably amazing. There are arrows, burning pine cones and rocks coming right AT you! The characters literally jump off the screen, both due to the 3D effect and due to the wonderful acting and cinematography.

Plus, and this is one of my favorite things - there's a lot of Gandalf, as well as a lot of the pre-history that was left out of the LOTR movies (ie: Saruman just at the beginning of his turn toward evil).

All I can say is, if you haven't seen it yet, go NOW!

    Excellent!!

Expansive story line in this one compared to LOR. Some changes from the book, but pretty close to true. The fight/flight scene in Moria was dizzying in 3D! Two thumbs up for this movie!

    Hobbit

    by ged2

Since I did not read the book I thought the story line and visuals were exceptional. I remember after seeing Lord of the Rings, we sat around and had hours of discussions on what was changed. I believe it is more entertaining to see it without reading the book first. The movie was outstanding, 3D is stunning, and most of all I like that kind of movie. Hope I do not have to wait a year to see the next. filming at 42 FPS was the way to go. Great Movie.

    The Hobbit

I had very high expectations for this film. I would say it met those expectations. There were many parts where I was simply giddy with how well they nailed it. There were however parts that I felt Peter Jackson just went too far over the top trying to squeeze in action. Becauase of that this film did not exceed my expectations when if very well could have. I still loved the movie and for any Tolkien die hard who's willing to accept a few tweaks this is a must see.

    The Hobbit

What a wonderful movie! Loved every minute of it. Also love how the producer incorporated some of the Lord of the Rings ideas. We would go see it again!!! IMAX 3D was awesome.

    Forget the whiners, this rocks!

I hear lots of complaints about time and other dumb things.

Bottom line is the movie is entertaining, it's well done, and I simply can't wait for the next one to come out!!!

I loved it and despite the long play time, it went very quickly. So much so that the ending really snuck up on you.

I plan on going again and I dont' watch movies at the theatres but a few times a year.

Giant Birds Must Charge By The Hour

Well-made and EGREGIOUSLY padded. Saw this in IMAX 3D (not HFR), and it looked real pretty. Jackson harvested from appendices to fatten this book into a trilogy. Movie 1 is pretty (in 24 fps, at least), though it RUNS long. I was struggling somewhere in the middle. And toward the end. There are some amazing sights and it ends strongly enough... but, IMHO, THE HOBBIT should have been two movies at most. That said, I've read The Hobbit and the LOTR books, and I've *liked* them but I've not made a religion of them. In some ways, Martin Freeman makes a more interesting/engaging protagonist than Elijah Wood. Still, caveat emptor. While I'm here, DISHONORED is a pretty fun videogame. Hello, Hi, How are you?

    Hobbit in Imax

I had aleady seen the Hobbit in 3D at another theater but because of a screw up at a local New IMax capable theater, I agreed to see it again in IMAX because I had never been to one. It reminds me of the 60s when Cinerama was the thing. I didn't see lot of difference between Imax and 3D except the wrap around affect. Also, and it might be this new theater, the sound level was so loud as to be almost painful and it was distorted a litle and that made the dialog difficult to understand, given the accents and strange words of Middle Earth.

Lots of action and a couple of tear jerker scenes. People should go to the 3D and not waste money on the Imax. it's not that different.

    The Hobbit

This was an awesome movie!!! After seeing some of the pictures online, I decided it was one that had to be seen in IMAX 3D. Probably the best movie I have seen, of its genre! I'm sure it was good in a regular theater, but in IMAX 3D, it was amazing! You have the stuff coming at you in 3D and the IMAX didn't make me feel nauseated as some films do in that screen. It has been years since I listened to the story on tape, so I can't say how they kept to the book.

I had read reviews about 24 fps vs. 48 fps and some were saying it looked like a home movie and was jerky, or it looked like a cartoon. For me, I couldn't tell a difference in this vs. the normal 24 fps.

I would recommend this for age 12+.

Best money I ever spent on a movie!

    The eternal movie

    by ferster

The visuals are superb, the action fast and without breaks between the idilic beginning and the final, somewhat silly, set-up for the sequel. You have seen the like (and perhaps better done) in several other movies recently. This flick is for you if you have the three hours and don't expect anything novel.

If you do go to see it, by all means see the IMAX 3-D version with its great sound and vast screen. IMAX is a very special process that makes any movie exciting and special. New Zealand, in IMAX, is a magical place, the perfect setting for Hobbits and other imagined folk good and evil.

    ...............B.F..............

    The Hobbit

    by kpleveq

While the movie lasted over two and a half hours the time seemed to pass very quickly. The movie and characters kept the action moving and there was enough time for comedy breaks through out the movie. The IMAX 3 D effects were excellent. The characters remained thru to their form in the Lord of the Ring Series. Overall I throughly enjoyed the show and would recommend it to anyone who likes fantasies.

    Kinda Long

    by cjkrist

I'm not especially fond of the "to be continued" style of movie making. In my humble opinion each of the "sequence" movies should carry a story line of their own, not rely on a subsequent movie to complete the story.

With that said the special effects were phenomenal, the acting superb and the costuming out-of -this-world. We saw the IMAX 3D version which made the special effects even better.

Needs a different Title…not "The Hobbit"

    by bwags

No, this is not LOTR…nor is it "The Hobbit"
Tolkien was a great writer. Why take a great story (yes, a lighter adventure tale then the epic LOTR) bog it down, change the essential details, add a lot of extraneous, unnecessary (repetitive, visually boring, unbelievable) details?

The only way to improve a great story, is to bring the story to life, help the mind's imagination relive the experience visually…as in LOTR or Harry Potter movies. This movie might have been an OK experience under a different title, maybe.

When I go to see a movie made from a book I love and admire, I want to see that book! It doesn't have to be verbatim, I realize the medium requires some adaptation, but it should at least let you watch without constantly bringing up the comparison between the two in your mind. The constant mental comparison distracts from the movie.

Should have been the "lighter" adventure as written. Many young people won't read the book, know the great story…they've been duped!

No need for IMAX or 3D

    by Kdc31

Painfully long - nothing special. I wouldn't waste the money on IMAX / 3D again -- took family of four and feel like I wasted 3 hours and about $100 bucks.
